Crown Dental Studio was established in 2017 in Durban, built on a vision that extended far beyond dentistry alone. For Dr Mohamed Fareed Amod, the journey into business ownership was not simply about opening a practice – it was about creating something independent, purpose-driven, and reflective of both his professional and entrepreneurial ambitions.

After completing his dental training, including an internship at Rietvlei Hospital in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Amod found himself at a crossroads. While many graduates follow a traditional route into established institutions, the idea of working within the confines of a conventional system, contributing to someone else’s vision, did not align with his long-term goals. Instead, he chose to build something of his own.

While dentistry had equipped him with the clinical skills required to provide a high standard of care, starting a business demanded an entirely different skill set. Without formal training in business or finance, Dr Amod relied on something that had been developing long before his medical career – an instinct for entrepreneurship. From a young age, he showed a strong inclination toward business. What began as small ventures in primary school grew into side hustles during high school, eventually helping to fund his studies. This mindset laid the foundation for what would become Crown Dental Studio.

Launching the practice came with its fair share of challenges. With an initial capital investment of R1 million, Fareed took a significant financial risk, securing premises, purchasing equipment, and transforming the space into a fully functional dental studio. Within just a month, Crown Dental Studio opened its doors, a milestone that marked the beginning of a journey shaped by determination and calculated risk-taking.

From the outset, quality was non-negotiable. Dr Amod placed an emphasis on investing in advanced equipment and high-grade materials, recognising that the tools used in practice directly influence the level of care patients receive. This commitment continues to define Crown Dental Studio today.

What began as a vision has grown into a thriving practice. For Fareed, one of the most rewarding aspects of this growth has been the opportunity to create employment and develop a team. By investing in training and skills development, he has built a workforce that plays an integral role in the day-to-day functioning of the business.

At the heart of Crown Dental Studio is patient experience. Dentistry, by nature, can often be associated with anxiety, but Dr Amod has worked to create an environment that feels approachable and patient-focused. The ability to restore confidence, often through something as simple yet powerful as a smile, remains one of the most fulfilling aspects of his work.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr Amod has continued to expand his knowledge base. His academic journey includes further studies in psychology, as well as postgraduate training in dentistry with a focus on prosthodontics, implantology, and oral surgery. Currently, he is completing a Bachelor of Laws degree, an addition that reflects both his curiosity and his long-term vision for growth across multiple disciplines.

Operating within an increasingly digital world, the business has embraced online platforms and social media as key tools for engagement and growth. Like any entrepreneurial journey, the path has not been without obstacles. In the early stages, navigating the financial and operational demands of running a business proved challenging. However, with guidance from his father, who brought valuable business insight, Dr Amod was able to develop the skills needed to manage and grow the practice effectively.

Today, Crown Dental Studio stands on a stable foundation, with future expansion already underway. Plans include the development of a broader medical facility, as well as the growth of Geylani Enterprises, a company founded by Dr Amod to supply medical and dental products. Together, these ventures form part of a larger vision to integrate healthcare services and create opportunities for collaboration within the industry.

In addition to his role as founder and CEO of Crown Dental Studio, Dr Amod serves as chairperson of the Medical Board of the Buzme Khalid Shah International (African Chapter), further reflecting his involvement within the wider medical community.

From a single idea to a growing healthcare brand, Crown Dental Studio is the result of vision and a willingness to take risks. For Dr Amod, the journey is far from over, it is simply continuing to evolve.
