  • Rajesh Lutchman | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Rajesh Lutchman chief executive officer of Siyaka Steeped in the entrepreneurial spirit of South Africa’s East Coast, Rajesh Lutchman has spent over three decades leading with vision, determination, and a relentless work ethic. As chief executive officer of Siyaka, Rajesh has grown the business from a small, dedicated team into a thriving, multi-site enterprise with operations in Durban, Johannesburg, Mauritius, and strategic representation in all major hubs primarily servicing southern Africa and East Africa. Siyaka is a trusted name in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, providing high-quality printed packaging solutions. From snack packets to detergents and beverages, products with Siyaka’s packaging line the shelves of retail stores across southern Africa – many consumers have likely held a Siyaka-printed item in their hands without even realising it. “I started with a small team,” Rajesh recalls, “many of whom are still with the company today. Honesty and integrity have shaped our culture. We’ve built a family, bound by a common vision: delivering value-engineered packaging with purpose.” CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT Rajesh’s drive for perfection was evident from an early age. For him, printing artwork on paper was never enough – he envisioned packaging that combined consistency, durability, and artisan-like quality at scale. That philosophy remains at the heart of Siyaka’s operations. Navigating the complexities of the manufacturing world requires more than operational excellence. It calls for foresight, adaptability, and the ability to mitigate risks and remove roadblocks. “You need to see the end at the beginning,” Rajesh says, “and map the path with precision.” Change is the only constant in the packaging and printing industry – a reality that has led Rajesh on a global journey across Europe and the Americas in pursuit of innovative solutions and cuttingedge technologies. His goal? To enhance the lives of consumers while creating sustainable, wasteefficient packaging that contributes to a healthier planet. Rajesh is driven not only by curiosity for processes, but by a deep respect for the people behind them. “My passion has always been in developing teams – nurturing a culture where individuals are empowered to thrive and contribute meaningfully to continuous improvement.” Siyaka remains grounded in the same core principles it held at inception: alignment among stakeholders, collaborative problem-solving, and a culture where the best ideas win. Rajesh fosters an environment of psychological safety, co-creation, and shared accountability. LEAVING A LEGACY Beyond Siyaka, Rajesh now sits on the board of various industries, including a property development and management portfolio and an investment entity. But for him, success has never been about the numbers. “The greatest investment you can make,” he reflects, “is in something that outlasts you. For me, it’s about leaving a legacy – one that improves the lives of employees, families, suppliers, customers, and consumers alike.” At Siyaka, succession and leadership development are not taken lightly. “As part of our family tradition, each of our children is encouraged to first gain experience in the open market following their tertiary qualification. Only thereafter, should they express the desire to join the business, do we have that conversation,” explained Rajesh. Following this principle, his two elder sons, Mikhail Lutchman and Luan Lutchman, have both joined the organisation– Luan most recently, following his tenure at Investec. Grooming tomorrow’s leadership is a profound responsibility. “In passing on what we refer to as the ‘holy grail’, we place strong emphasis on continual improvement (CI) – a principle we uphold alongside innovation, accountability, and strategic thinking.” SOUL OF A FAMILY BUSINESS While the organisation is structured and mirrors the operational discipline of a corporate entity, Siyaka proudly retain the agility and soul of a family business. Swift, decisive action on emerging opportunities has long been one of its key differentiators. Family remains a central pillar. “Every quarter, we retreat as a family to a remote destination – a tradition that serves as a reset, fostering harmony and alignment across both personal and professional spheres,” explains Rajesh. “Our business endeavours are united by a shared vision and long-term commitment. We remain optimistic, guided by a clear five-year outlook and a focus on delivering lasting impact in emerging markets. Challenges persist, but so do opportunities – and there is much to be done by the next generation of industry leaders.” Over the years, Rajesh and his team have been honoured with numerous accolades, a testament to their dedication and excellence, and the values we stand for. He comments, “We remain driven by purpose, united in our mission, and committed to excellence –today, and for the future.” In conclusion Rajesh says that his business philosophy is guided by his mantra which is: “Question the status quo. Dare to change it.” Previous Next

  • Portio Dlamini | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Portio Dlamini Portio Dlamini is the managing director of the Emakheni Group Portio Dlamini is the managing director of the Emakheni Group, a company she founded over ten years ago. The main division of the group focuses on cleaning and industrial solutions, with plans for future subsidiaries. As managing director, Portio oversees the overall operations, implements strategic initiatives, ensures departmental efficiency, and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders. Reflecting on her roots, she shares, “I was born and bred in a small village called Soffelton at Impendle, about 100km from Pietermaritzburg.” Portio was raised by her grandparents while her mother, a teacher, continued her studies. Though growing up without a father presented challenges, she remembers her childhood as mostly pleasant. Portio matriculated at Pholela High School. She pursued a diploma and then a degree in chemical engineering at the Mangosuthu University of Technology and Durban University of Technology (DUT) respectively. Portio’s formal career began at Sappi Mandini, a pulp and paper company, where she served as an intern. This opportunity was part of a bursary programme she had been awarded during university. Her intern- ship as a process technician lasted 12 months and provided invaluable experience. She later joined Sasol as a process technician, where she continued to build her industry knowledge. PERSONAL CHALLENGES Reflecting on the foundation of Emakheni Group, Portio credits her decade-long experience in the manufacturing industry, where she was exposed to a variety of departments and operational insights. However, as a young graduate, she faced significant personal challenges, including identity struggles and poor self-image – issues that stemmed largely from growing up without a father. Only after seeking counselling and overcoming these obstacles did Portio find purpose in life. Portio’s decision to create Emakheni Group was driven by a desire to empower others, particularly those facing marginalisation. While working in the industry, she encountered cleaning contractors and observed their struggles, which often affected their service delivery. The goal was to show cleaners and general workers that their roles could be stepping stones to greater opportunities, not lifelong limitations. Portio notes: “We’ve helped them to dream more and look beyond being a cleaner. We help them understand that they can study further, start a business, or pursue other career paths.” This investment in their growth has led to boosted morale and improved service delivery. Portio sees this as a symbiotic relationship that benefits both employees and clients. For Portio, transitioning from being an employee to an employer and successfully running Emakheni stand out as major milestones in her life. Sustaining a business for ten years, she believes, is a testament to the hard work and support from countless individuals who have contributed to her journey. Among the lessons Portio has learned over the years, one piece of advice stands out: “Success is 80% preparation and 20% opportunity.” This wisdom has had a profound impact on her approach to both personal and business growth. “In the first three to four years of our business, when opportunities were limited, I continued to build the business, increase our capacity, and strengthen our systems,” she shares. She sought guidance, bolstered the company’s customer base, and ensured that Emakheni Group was ready to act when new opportunities arose. By applying this principle, the company became competent, compliant, and well- positioned to step confidently into new ventures. FACING CHALLENGES Portio recalls the initial challenges of starting her business as she had no clear understanding of how to run a business. “I lacked insight into our potential customer base and had minimal awareness of the competition,” she shares. However, she said, “I was fortunate to have strong leaders guiding me, instilling in me the principles that later became instrumental in my own leadership style.” Through mentorship, she learned strategies to manage teams effectively, applying these lessons to her company. She prioritises communication and transparency, aligning her team with the company’s vision and ensuring that everyone understands their contributions. A vital lesson Portio has learned is the importance of cultivating a supportive and positive company culture, which is reinforced through regular team meetings and personal interactions. This enables the organisation to face difficulties with unity and focus on the bigger picture. Portio’s inspiration comes from various sources. An influential figure in her life was her spiritual mentor, the late Dr Basil Tryon. "His guidance was instrumental during the early stages of my business, helping me to discover my purpose and break through personal and professional limitations,” Portio explains. David White, a businessman she met through an ESD (Enterprise and Supplier Development) programme facilitated by the SA Home Loans Foundation (called Sekela) and BusinessFit, had a profound influence. “His mentorship taught me invaluable lessons about entrepreneurial mindsets at various stages of growth – from startup to corporate scale,” she says. She also gained valuable insights in other ESD programmes, such as Raizcorp, where she completed NQF level 5 in entrepreneurship. However, Portio says, “What inspires me most is witnessing transformation – seeing individuals rise above challenging circumstances to improve their lives and reach new levels of achievement. It is this vision of growth and empowerment that keeps me motivated.” Portio’s current aim is to enter new supply chains in the industrial and commercial sectors, scaling the business to compete in wider markets. Beyond her own company, Portio envisions increased collaboration between small enterprises and large corporations in KwaZulu-Natal to create a robust ecosystem that benefits all. Portio lives by a powerful motto from one of her mentors: ‘If you raise the inner status of a man, then that inner status will eventually transform his outward life’. “Focusing on personal growth has allowed me to overcome challenges and achieve progress, not only in my career but in all areas of life,” she concludes. • Gerald Wells | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Gerald Wells Gerald Wells is the owner Gerald Wells Hair Professionals Gerald Wells has been a leading hair stylist and businessman for over 30 years. Gerald grew up in Westville and attended Westville Boys High School. Initially, his sights were set on being interior designer, he recalls. By chance, he found himself drawn into the hairdressing profession, a field he would quickly fall in love with. Gerald’s entry into hairdressing was a decision that would set the course for a long and successful career. He began as an apprentice in Durban, learning the craft and honing his skills. “It wasn’t something I planned, but once I started, I knew it was what I wanted to do,” he says. His early experiences in the industry taught him not just the technical skills of hairdressing but also the importance of client relationships and business acumen. His career was marked by a thirst for knowledge, so he decided to broaden his horizons by working overseas. “I wanted to see how things were done elsewhere, to learn from the best,” he explains. This led him to London and Australia, where he was exposed to new techniques, styles, and business practices that were ahead of their time in South Africa. “Those years were invaluable,” he notes. “I learned so much about the industry, but also about myself and what I wanted to achieve.” Upon returning to South Africa, Gerald was ready to take on the challenge of building his own business. He started with a single salon, but he says, “I knew I wanted to create something bigger, something that could grow and evolve.” SERVICE IS EVERYTHING Gerald’s business grew steadily, thanks to his commitment to quality and his focus on building strong relationships with clients. “Service is every- thing,” he emphasises. “People come to you not just for a haircut, but for the experience, the connection.” Over the years, Gerald’s business ventures expanded significantly. The 28 stores that Gerald has opened throughout his career consist of the following: 18 Splush stores, four GHD hair hardware kiosks, three salons and three barber shops. They include: two salons at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre – Gerald Wells Hair and The Barber by Gerald Wells and GHD Hair Hardware retail stores at both Ballito Lifestyle Centre and Gateway Theatre of Shopping. Despite his success, Gerald has faced challenges. One was relocating his flagship store, a move that required careful planning and execution. “It was a stressful time,” he admits. “We had to make sure our clients stayed with us and that the transition was smooth.” The relocation was a success, thanks to Gerald’s attention to detail and his strong relationship with his clients. Another challenge came with the financial difficulties surrounding Splush, a chain of hairdressing retail outlets were opened across South Africa. “Splush was a great idea, but like any business, it had its ups and downs,” he reflects. “You have to stay focused on your goals and be prepared to make tough decisions.” Personal challenges have also been part of Gerald’s journey. Going through a divorce was a difficult period for him, but he remained focused on his business and his family. “It wasn’t easy, but I learned a lot about myself and what really matters,” he shares. PASSION IS CONTAGIOUS For Gerald, keeping his team motivated is an important aspect of his business. He believes in leading by example and fostering a positive work environment. “Passion is contagious,” he says. “If you’re excited about what you do, your team will be too.” Education is an essential component of his approach. Gerald plays a key role in his company’s training academy, where he focuses on empower- ing new talent. “Mentorship is so important, he emphasizes. “I want to help others achieve their dreams, just like others helped me when I was starting out.” Being actively involved in the business is crucial for Gerald.“I try to be hands-on, to be there for my team when they need me,” he explains. This involvement helps to build camaraderie and trust within the team. Gerald also emphasises the importance of acknowledging the hard work people put in and to celebrate achievements together. SOMETHING UNIQUE In addition to his salons and retail outlets, Gerald has his own haircare range, which is stocked in DisChem stores. “Creating my own product line was something I’d always wanted to do,” he says. “It’s been a great way to extend the brand and offer something unique to our clients.” Beyond the world of hairdressing, Gerald is involved in Brand Boys, a company he co-founded with his son Wesley Wells and a friend. “I love the challenge of starting something new, of seeing an idea come to life,” he explained. Despite his busy professional life, Gerald makes time for his personal passions, including travelling and exploring beauty, health, and food globally. “Travelling is a great way to recharge and find inspiration,” he says. Family is a central part of Gerald’s life. His greatest accomplishment, he says, is being a father to his three children, Wesley, Dylan, and Jade. “My family means everything to me,” he shares. Balancing the demands of running multiple businesses with family life isn’t always easy, but Gerald makes it a priority. “At the end of the day, they’re the reason I do what I do.” Looking back on his career, Gerald takes pride in what he has accomplished but remains humble about his success. “I’ve been very fortunate,” he reflects. “But it’s not just about luck – it’s about hard work, passion, and being willing to take risks.” As he looks to the future, Gerald is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, saying: “There’s always more to learn, more to achieve.” The motto that Gerald lives by is, “Do unto others as you like done unto yourself.” He explains, “I’ve been very fortunate throughout life to receive handsome rewards for the work I have done, but I really feel whatever you give out in life, it’ll come back tenfold.” Previous Next

Xolani is also a director of various businesses in which Grindrod has a shareholding including the chairperson of Maputo Port Development Company. Xolani completed his primary education at Kwa- Ngcolosi, outside Hillcrest, where he grew up. The area which is home to the famous Inanda Dam which is a stage two finish for the Dusi canoe marathon held annually in February. He then matriculated at uMqhawe High School. His studies did not end there as Xolani went on to become a qualified chartered accountant and completed the Advanced Management Programme from Harvard Business School. He is known for his integrity and ability to translate strategic themes into actionable strategic and business plans. Xolani was nominated for the 2020 Chief Financial Officer Awards. VARIOUS ROLES Coming from humble beginnings, Xolani commented that his first informal job was as a gardener in the suburb of Manor Gardens, a walking distance from the same university he would later attend. His first formal job was when he secured employment as an article clerk at Coopers and Lybrand, now known as PwC. Prior to joining Grindrod in March 2013, Xolani spent over a decade in the mining industry in various roles spanning accounting and finance, mining project execution, mining business performance analysis (iron ore, coal, and manganese), and coal marketing. During this time, he worked in Anglo American’s offices in Johannesburg and London, its then mining operation in Mpumalanga, and its gas exploration office in Gaborone. Having worked as Grindrod’s Freight Services CFO since 2013, Xolani accepted a group financial director role in September 2018. Transitioning from the group financial director role of Grindrod Limited to CEO involved working in the operations at the coal face, which was crucial in understanding the business. In February 2021, he returned to Freight Services to assume the CEO responsibilities and two years later assumed the role of CEO of Grindrod Limited group. Given Xolani’s various roles in Grindrod, it is unsurprising that the accomplishment that makes him the proudest is his appointment as Grindrod Limited’s first African CEO. Xolani says his purpose in this position is aligned to that of the company he now leads. He explained, “The purpose, particularly for Grindrod Limited is to promote Africa’s trade with the world and to touch the lives of the communities in which we operate. That is what drives us. And I am hoping that is what drives all our employees and colleagues throughout the organisation.” HARD WORK PAYS OFF Reflecting on the best advice he has ever received and how it has influenced his journey, Xolani is quick to respond with the words: “Hard work pays off.” Xolani has taken this advice to heart, which has steered his career well, noting that he has been acknowledged for his many efforts and dedication over the years. Reflecting on what he recognises in successful people, he said they have a positive attitude. They are continuously looking for solutions and ways to improve their work. This attitude impacts every- thing in their lives, both on a personal front and in the work environment. “You can’t teach attitude and work ethic,” he explains. While Xolani has faced several challenges over the years, the biggest challenge he has ever overcome was undoubtably the impact of Covid-19 in 2020. He commented that navigating the effects of Covid-19 was very challenging from a business perspective. “Operational closures due to Covid- restrictions had the potential to negatively impact job security for our colleagues. So, to navigate this crisis, we, together with the management team, implemented various cost containment and cash preservation measures to ensure that the business survived the impact of Covid-19,” explained Xolani. CLARITY OF PURPOSE Xolani added, “What I’ve realised is that in all these challenges, the clarity of purpose and strategy combined with the culture of recognition for high performance is what really keeps the team motivated.” Speaking of who or what inspires him, Xolani says that it is undoubtedly a ‘who’, as he has been inspired by his mother throughout his life. “My mother single-handedly raised three of us and provided us with the best education she could afford. She made excellent choices for me at my younger age, and my two sisters’ education and progress in our careers. Unfortunately, one of my sisters passed on.” POSITIVE IMPACT Commenting on his vision for Grindrod in the next five years, Xolani is enthusiastic about the company’s future growth. He said, “Actually, it would be very fulfilling for me to see Grindrod becoming the largest listed company in KwaZulu-Natal and achieving this through its purpose of promoting Africa’s trade with the world.” In addition, Xolani said, “Success is not only about profits. We must uplift communities in and around our operations and make a difference in society.” In his concluding comment, Xolani says that his motto echoes the advice that he values: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Previous Next

The IDC is the largest development financing institution in South Africa and across the continent. After completing his BCom accounting degree, Pat’s professional journey started off at Standard Bank. He moved his way up the ranks and left the bank as a small medium enterprise manager to join the IDC. Over the years, Pat has completed a number of leadership training programmes, including an MBA and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) Global Leadership course. Pat’s career with the IDC spans over 24 years. One of his greatest wishes during this time is to extend the reach of the IDC within KZN. Commenting on his role Pat says, "I’m very passionate about SME development, especially in my home province KZN. There’s lots of potential and impact in funding businesses. I think overall, my proudest moment is funding businesses and seeing them grow organically over a period of time. When I drive past any of our clients’ premises, I am proud to say that these are businesses IDC has funded. Maybe in my old age or in my retirement, I will be able to tell my grandkids there’s the business IDC funded and from humble beginnings it has grown over the years to be a leading company in the province and the country.” AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH Following his previous work experiences, Pat has always been driven to be an effective leader. He explains that during his early career he encountered many bad leadership styles and unpleasant habits, which were patterns of behaviour that he did not want to use to lead his team. “I learnt from the poor leadership examples that I was exposed to and have improved on these. The scenario in the corporate world is changing. Back in the day, leadership was often like a dictatorship, and it’s changed. I told myself that I won’t be like those leaders. I need to be a different type of leader to ensure that I get the most out of my team and keep them motivated as well. Today, leadership is about being part of that team, it’s not a top-down approach. It’s an inclusive approach and that’s how you get buy-in from your team and create a win- win situation for everyone.” Pat is not motivated by external sources. He says, “I don’t benchmark myself against anyone. I set my own standards and I deliver on those standards, which are at a very high level. You must be an individual and make a difference based on your own motivation and your own contribution. I don’t need to aspire to be someone else.” He added that honesty, integrity and abiding by the rules are important to him. “I’m a rules person but there must be flexibility, as long as you are within the parameters that have been set. Being in the financial sector and funding in particular, compliance, honesty and integrity is the first consideration, you then jockey behind the company.” A CONVERSATION Pat commented a major challenge is that some- times his humbleness can be mistaken as a weakness. He explains, “You don’t have to be forceful as a leader in the corporate world, but because you’re not forceful in your approach, the outside world does not take you seriously, that’s what I want to change.” Pat continues that you should be able to direct and conduct business through having a conversation. Conversely, history or the likes in the corporate world want you to be in command. “We’re not in the army, you can be firm, but you don’t have to be a dictator or have a forceful nature. Sometimes those challenges do crop up from time to time because people expect you to behave in that way as a leader,” he expanded. For Pat interacting with people is a process and about building a relationship. “It’s about sitting around the table and saying this is what we can do. How do we find middle ground and see the end picture?” He commented, “I want to be me, do my work, but do it properly and correctly. Power provides a false sense of respect. I still want to be a person in my own right when I leave the IDC and not be defined by my previous title.” UNITY WITHIN COMMUNITY While the province of KwaZulu-Natal has gone through a number of strikes, unrest and flooding, Pat’s vision for the future is that everyone will come together to form a public private partnership that will see the economy grow. In order for this to occur, Pat believes that everyone needs to do away with the red tape. “To see that growth in the economy, everyone has to play their part, from local government to provincial government, to large corporates to small businesses. We have to club together with one vision if we want to see the growth in the economy and create jobs to counter unemployment and alleviate poverty. Everyone needs to come together to make sure that we can fund businesses and we can use corporate social investments to get the desired outcomes, grow the economy and contribute to the well-being of the community.” In conclusion, says Pat, “My motto in life is ‘your word must be your bond.’ If I can find that in a person or in a company, I’m all out there to support that company or person.” Previous Next

  • Lubin Ozoux | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Lubin Ozoux Lubin Ozoux is the chief executive officer of Sumitomo Rubber South Africa Lubin Ozoux is the chief executive officer of Sumitomo Rubber South Africa. The company is well known for making Dunlop tyres that are supplied to 47 countries in Africa. The biggest country being South Africa, which also has a manufacturing facility in uMnambithi (Ladysmith). Originally from Reunion Island, a French island with a population of about 800 000 located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, Lubin moved to South Africa in the 90s. He commented, “My parents were a big fan of South Africa, when the change happened at the end of the apartheid area, they wanted us to be part of history.” He attended high school in Durban and then university in Pietermaritzburg. Lubin’s first official job, while studying at university, was a barman at Scottsville Racecourse. During the completion of his postgraduate studies, he lectured in the financial aspects of marketing at Varsity College. “That was a great experience, which was of real value to me. I actually got the love of learning from that job because as a lecturer you have to not only know the material, but you have to understand it, so you can pass on the meaning and answer questions,” he shares. A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION As CEO of Sumitomo Rubber Lubin has now found his purpose in leading a company that fits with his own ‘why’ which is about consciousness, doing what is right and making a positive contribution. Sumitomo Rubber is striving to create a future of joy and well- being for all, wherein the employees can support each other and contribute effectively to the company. In creating the space to create that joy, Sumitomo Rubber strives to set up the structures, culture and environment to give people the means to perform and maintain jobs in South Africa. Lubin explains further, “The company makes sure we don’t take the easiest routes, but we take the right route for the long-term success of the company, the employees, and all stakeholders. We focus on what we can control and strive to get that right.” Although Sumitomo Rubber initially drove a top- down approach to culture, they are now seeing a bottom-up trend. This trend is apparent in the great initiatives been sustainably driven by employees at all levels who are demonstrate a willingness to contribute positively in their roles. Lubin says that this culture is key to the company’s future. PURSUES OPPORTUNITIES Lubin, as well as his brothers, have received much guidance from their father who always said, ‘It doesn’t matter what you do. If you’re the best at what you do, you’re going to be very successful’. Aligned to this, Lubin constantly pursues opportunities and finds the means to engage in learning to improve his skills and knowledge. “I think that ethos really drives me personally, as well as how we drive our business. We encourage people to always be a bit better. If every day you get a bit better, and it doesn’t matter what industry or what position you’re in, you will be successful.” In addition to his father, Lubin had a great mentor, Bruno Beck, who ‘led from the front’ and was hugely influential in his life. “It’s not about what he said, it’s about what he did in terms of living a culture and its values. I’ve never experienced that anywhere else. You just can’t help then to follow that lead and to get that energy. I strive to do as much as I can by leading from the front. I think action is larger than words,” says Lubin. Over the last four- or five-years, South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal have not been short of challenges. Lubin explains that with every challenge comes an opportunity and that these drive the company, as there are many lessons to be learnt to make your business more robust and your team better. “That’s what we strive to do. Challenges are about mindset and the willingness to turn them, as quickly as possible, into opportunity, and to take the people on the journey with you.” “I often talk to the team and say when you go back home, will you be proud of what you’ve done today? Have you done the maximum you can do? Have you behaved in line with our values or your values? If we’ve done that, every day, then we are on the right track,” explained Lubin. BUILDING TRUST In terms of work, part of Sumitomo Rubber’s culture is to build and enhance trust with their employees. To enable that process all employees are encouraged to share their life journeys with each other. “Whenever I do that with any employees, you’re always amazed about the journey that people have taken, some of the hardships that people have gone through,” says Lubin. “Helping them to go a step or two further is very inspiring, and South Africa has really amazing people with much resilience.” For the future, Sumitomo believes that there are vast opportunities in their industry. The company often talks about where they are in their life cycle in relation to the maturity of a teenager. Lubin commented that they work very hard at having that teenager mindset, which is about taking advantage of as many opportunities as possible. “As a teenager, you also know you’re going to make some mistakes. But the key is how quickly can you learn to mature? In the next few years, it’s about how we use these opportunities to help us mature and help us get stronger.” Lubin’s motto is that as a leader, ‘you need to be vulnerable’. In conclusion he explained that they have three words that assist in driving Sumitomo Rubber on a daily basis which are, “intent, ambition and impact’. In terms of intent, he says we need to learn from each other and to understand each other. Ambition is about not getting stuck in easy paths but to really be ambitious and to take risks. Impact is about everyday actions. Are these making an impact and are they as a company taking a step forward? Previous Next

  • Damian Bradley | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Damian Bradley Damian Bradley is the manager director of B-Active Events Damian Bradley, the manager director of B-Active Events, has carved out a significant space for himself in the sports marketing industry. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I’ve been involved in the sports marketing business for many years now. My path started shortly after finishing school at Michaelhouse, when I pursued sports management at Damelin and Varsity College.” After entering the world of sports marketing through a series of part-time jobs, he discovered his genuine enjoyment for managing sporting events. However, Damian’s entry into the professional world began in the corporate sector, a time he remembers vividly. “My first and only job working for someone else was at Bromor Foods which was later acquired by Cadbury’s. I served as the regional marketing coordinator for Energade and Game, along with a few other brands.” His involvement extended beyond marketing duties. “We engaged with sponsorships for sporting events, which aligned perfectly with what I wanted to pursue. We also did a lot of community involvement, and I travelled extensively, contributing to projects nationally alongside other regions,” Damian added. This formative period, which lasted four years, laid the groundwork for him to venture into his own business. A HOLISTIC APPROACH Damian’s current role at B-Active Events focuses on strategic growth and innovation. "The purpose of my position is to oversee the expansion of our events and seek out new opportunities – whether that means forming partnerships, securing sponsors, or finding the perfect venues across the country,” he said. His approach is holistic, looking at how the business can run smoother and more efficiently. “It’s a high-level view, ensuring that each part of the operation contributes to making the events better,” he noted. Reflecting on his career milestones, Damian’s pride shines through as he talks about one standout achievement: “One of my proudest moments was organising one of the first sporting events in South Africa post-Covid. The pandemic had brought mass participation events to a standstill, but we managed to host the first triathlon at Sun City – the Sun City Ultra Triathlon. It was an enormous feat, given that governments and municipalities were hesitant to allow events to proceed,” he recalled. This event, in partnership with the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), drew international attention. “Seeing athletes, who hadn’t competed for a year and a half, come to South Africa to race was really rewarding and exciting,” Damian said. The event demonstrated not only resilience but also the willingness of the international sporting community to re-engage, marking a pivotal moment for B-Active Events. When asked about the best advice he has received, Damian shared insights that emphasise his practical approach to challenges. “I wouldn’t say it’s advice I was given directly, but rather a philosophy I’ve adopted which is: Never give up,” he revealed. “In the world of sporting events, you rely on countless variables to align – from logistics to weather to participant availability. It’s never straightforward. But the key is not to stare at the problem and wonder why it’s there; it’s to find a solution and make it happen,” Damian emphasised. EFFORT AND STRATEGY Balancing work and personal life is a challenge many professionals face, and Damian is no exception. “Being a father of two – my kids are 10 and 13 – makes it tough. Sporting events always happen over the weekends, so I miss out on a lot of family time,” he said. To compensate, Damian and his team work from an office at his home, allowing him to be present during the week. However, he admits, “It’s not the same as having that dedicated time.” The industry itself comes with its own set of difficulties. “One of the major challenges we face is finding suitable venues. As our population grows and issues like water pollution become more pronounced, it’s harder to secure places for events,” he noted. He cited recent examples, such as the delays in triathlon events at the Olympics due to water pollution, to highlight the seriousness of the issue. Maintaining team spirit amidst these challenges requires effort and strategy. “I’m lucky to have a self-motivated team,” Damian stated. “To keep them motivated, I focus on keeping the atmosphere positive. There’s always going to be rough times, but I believe in having a sense of humour about it all. Life doesn’t always hand you peaches; sometimes you get lemons, and it’s about finding the best solution.” POSITIVE OUTLOOK For Damian, inspiration comes from those he serves: the athletes. “It might sound clichéd, but the athletes who participate in our events inspire me,” he said. He recounted a recent event, a Tinman Triathlon, and how parents he once raced with now bring their children to compete. “It’s so encouraging, seeing kids as young as eight getting involved and really enjoying the sport is incredible. Triathlon isn’t a school sport, so it takes extra effort to introduce them to it. Watching newcomers, both young and older athletes, training hard and seeing their dedication paying off is immensely motivating,” Damian shared. Despite recent challenges in KwaZulu-Natal, Damian is optimistic about the potential for growth. “KZN is unique with its rich natural resources – the Drakensberg, the coast, Zululand, and the battlefields. Everything is close, making it a prime location for events,” he noted. His goal for the next five years is to develop creative and exciting new events that challenge and inspire participants. “We want to think outside the box and give the people of KZN something they want to do and that will be rewarding,” he said. While not bound by a single motto, Damian holds a positive outlook as his guiding principle. “I always tell my kids, ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.’ But in a broader sense, my mantra is to stay positive,” he stated. “There’s enough negativity in the world.” He concluded, “The past is done, and it’s up to us to keep our heads up and focus on the difference we can make in the world.” Previous Next
