< Back Next Heather Flack Heather Flack is the impassioned business leader of Flair Accounting Heather Flack is the impassioned business leader of Flair Accounting, a boutique accounting practice based in Morningside, Durban. Heather grew up in Vereeniging in the Vaal Triangle. When she matriculated in 1997, she was unexpectedly offered a full bursary to study any form of art, which Heather says was quite unheard of. “However, I was blessed with the wisdom to know that while art was my passion, it’s a subjective field. I could end up in jail for beating somebody up when they said they didn’t like what I had made!” she explains with a chuckle. Preferring the structured nature of accounting and realising the impact sound financial decision making could have for businesses, she started her articles after school and studied at night at the then Potchefstroom University. After working in a practice for a few years, Heather realised that the traditional accounting model was never going to work for her. Heather explains, “My heart was always in a space to really help business owners in the full sense of what finance can give to a business owner – not just their tax structure.” Heather then joined a business in Durban in 1999 and after three years, on her 23rd birthday, started Flair Accounting, which has now been serving clients for 21 years. “I am blessed to lead a wonderful team. We have always said that we want to change the world one business at a time because life is about people, not about numbers, titles, or accolades. Finance has an amazing ability to empower people to make decisions to change their businesses to affect the economy, and to positively affect the country.” Flair Accounting’s mission statement is “to be the most loved accounting practice in Durban.”“We love the work we do and seeing the impact it makes. We want the businesses and clients that we serve to love working with us because ultimately relationships are what empower us to make that difference in their lives.” THRIVING FOR 21 YEARS The accomplishment that makes Heather the proudest is not just surviving for 21 years but thriving. “I’m very proud of our legacy of impact, which was not my intention when I started, but which has been the outcome of the last 21 years of focusing on relationships whilst providing incredible accounting solutions. This means the world to me.” She is proud of the many people who have worked for Flair Accounting, who believed in her ethos of breaking the traditional accounting practice mould. The grounding gained has seen them go on to work for companies such as Unilever, Derivco and the PKFs of the world. Heather says, “Our success is really due to each individual who has served with us.” The best advice Heather has received was from George Ross, the first client that she took on when she started her business. He said that the definition of a leader is somebody that people WILLINGLY follow, which shaped Heather’s approach to engaging with staff, clients, community and stakeholders. “If you are not a leader that people will willingly follow, you’re just a dictator. Understanding that defined my entire company culture and how I interact with every single person in my life,” explains Heather. Heather has faced two major challenges in her business. The first she has resolved by getting older because the immediate challenge that she faced was her youthful age when she started Flair Accounting. “Firstly, to get anybody to have the confidence that I had the ability to do what I said I was going to do was quite difficult. Developing trust in my abilities took many years and sometimes meant that I offered to do the work for free. If the clients were happy afterwards, they could pay me, which worked. One client even paid me double!” she explains. The second challenge, which took a little bit longer for Heather to resolve, was realising that when it comes to hiring people to join the practice that you can’t just hire anybody – you need to find the right body. “I overcame that by developing a meaningful hiring process whereby we can discover who you are before you work with us, because who you are we can’t change. What you know we can change; we can teach you and you can learn. I’m immensely proud of our hiring process and how we go about finding those right people.” LIVE YOUR WHY In addition, Heather says that although businesses will always encounter obstacles and workforces will always have conflicts, the best way to resolve these is to be clear about what your culture is and to live your why. “There’s a wonderful book by Simon Sinek called Leaders Eat Last and that ethos I’d like to think we model here. When the times are tough, I will be the first one to join the team and do the hard yards. I have always found that when I climb in the trenches with the staff there’s nothing that we can’t achieve.” Heather is inspired by ethical people who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. She adds, “Not because they have to, but because it’s the right thing and that has always been a wonderful affirmation for me.” An example of a leader she follows is Thuli Madonsela, because in a male dominated world and in an incredibly challenging environment, she has had the strength of her convictions. Heather’s vision for her business in the next five to ten years is that, although they’ve grown exponentially over the last years, she would like to see even more impact being had on the economy by empowering people with brilliant financial information. The motto that Heather lives by is “life is about people” which is the superpower driving her company culture. “If we always remember that, whether it’s a tax return I’m dealing with or a financial statement or a forensic audit or estate planning. I’m doing it with numbers, but I’m doing it for people,” she concludes. Previous Next
- Theolan Govender | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Theolan Govender Theolan Govender is the regional manager for Afrisam in KwaZulu-Natal Theolan Govender, the regional manager for Afrisam in KwaZulu-Natal, has a background rooted in Isipingo, south of Durban. His journey began at local schools before he moved on to Thomas Moore College in Kloof thereafter matriculating at Isipingo Secondary School in 1998. Theolan pursued a national diploma at the Durban University of Technology (formerly Natal Technicon), which was a crucial stepping stone in his career, where he gained technical expertise. He then completed in-service training at South African Breweries, sharpening his practical skills in a real- world setting. Theolan’s career officially began with a building admin- istrative position at Holcim (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd in Johannesburg. He quickly took on responsibilities in facilities management, a role that involved stakeholder engagement, safety oversight, project management and extensive networking with various teams. Reflecting on this foundational experience, Theolan remarked, “This job was the building block in terms of where I am today, simply because it was part of my passion to work with people on the ground.” His performance at Holcim did not go unnoticed. Within just two years, Theolan was recognised with the ‘Holcim Best Employee’ award, a testament to his hard work and determination. This accolade led to his transition into a project engineer role at Holcim in 2007, where he continued to build his expertise in engineering and management. By 2012, Theolan had risen to the position of regional engineering manager for the aggregates and ready-mix business units, thereafter being promoted to national engineering manager, overseeing engineering activities on all operations across the country. Recognising the importance of continuous learning, Theolan pursued further education while advancing in his career. He completed a Bachelor of Technology degree in 2015, which enabled him to register as a Professional Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa. His academic journey did not stop there, as he later earned a Master’s in Business Administration, equipping him with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of business management. This degree he reflected was a big accomplishment as when he and his wife completed their MBAs cum laude, their children were one and three years old. He said, “This effectively taught us to manage life situations, but still meet academic and work expectations.” Currently, Theolan is completing his doctoral studies, aiming to contribute to the field of leadership and talent management. LEADERSHIP AND VISION In his current role as regional manager for KwaZulu- Natal, Theolan oversees all aggregates and ready-mix operations. His responsibilities are extensive, includ- ing managing profit and loss, implementing business strategies to sustain and grow the company, whilst ensuring compliance to stringent safety regulations. His role also involves close collaboration with govern- ment entities managing compliance activities. “Lead- ing and managing our people in KwaZulu-Natal to achieve both development and business objectives are significant but crucial parts of my role,” Theolan shared, highlighting his commitment to both organ- isational success and employee development. Theolan’s leadership style is deeply influenced by advice that has guided him throughout his career: “Hold yourself responsible for higher standards than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. Be a hard master to yourself and be lenient to everyone else.” This philosophy has shaped Theolan into a transform- ational leader who believes in leading with influence, allowing his team to take ownership of their processes and goals. He emphasises the importance of setting clear expectations, providing support, and fostering an environment where team members feel empowered to contribute and excel. From a business perspective, Theolan takes great pride in the development of employee skills, par- ticularly during challenging economic times. “To have realised the implementation of a development strategy and reaping the positive effects on our employees ... makes me the proudest,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to nurturing talent and creating opportunities for growth within the organisation. CHALLENGES AND FUTURE OUTLOOK Theolan’s journey has not been without its challenges. The economic downturn, compounded by pandemic- related issues, loadshedding, illegal mining and the complexities related to licence to operate, have placed significant pressure on the construction materials industry. Despite these challenges, Theolan remains focused on motivating his team and driving performance. “My formula for team motivation lies in six areas,” Theolan explained, detailing the importance of understanding roles, developing actionable plans, assisting with challenges, having the crucial conversations, aligning team development goals, and cele- brating both successes and failures. Theolan draws inspiration from the resilience of people during economic hardships, finding moti- vation in their ability to persevere despite adversity. This inspiration drives his doctoral research, which aims to improve the relationship between employer and employee. “The outcomes of this study will assist in developing a transformational leadership model for talent management and psychological contract for South African construction materials companies,” he noted. Looking ahead, Theolan is optimistic about the future of business in KwaZulu-Natal. With the region experiencing a significant increase in employment within the construction industry, he believes that the next decade will remain busy with infrastructure projects, offering ample opportunities for growth and development. “My thoughts are that KwaZulu-Natal is currently the region to be in for many skills and trades,” he said, emphasising the importance of managing operations effectively, improving bottom-line per- formance, and investing in responsible expansion. Theolan also highlights the need for continuous improvement and adaptability in the face of changing market conditions. He is focused on devel- oping strategies that will ensure the long-term success of his business units, while also contributing to the broader economic development of the region. In closing, Theolan shared his personal motto, inspired by Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” This philosophy underscores his approach to leadership and his commitment to persevering through challenges, both personal and professional. “Even though we fail at times, the sun will shine at the end,” he concluded. - Essa Suleman | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Essa Suleman Essa Ebrahim Suleman is the chief executive officer of the Woodford Group Essa Ebrahim Suleman serves as the chief executive officer of the Woodford Group, a position that places him at the forefront of one of South Africa’s most prominent vehicle rental and mobility solution providers. Leading the company he joined at an early age, Essa plays an essential role in shaping the Woodford Group’s future and expanding its reach within southern Africa and beyond. His journey in both education and career started with a unique path. “After matriculating, I studied toward and attained my Private Pilot Licence (PPL), before joining Woodford,” he explains. His journey continued with advanced studies; in 2013, Essa completed an MBA at Wits Business School. This combination of hands-on industry experience and academic pursuit helped equip Essa with the skills to guide and grow the company. Essa began his career at the first Woodford Car Hire branch in Woodford Grove in Durban. Recalling his first role, he says, “My first job was as a rental agent, and I was trained on the front desk by Mr. Zufer Khan – an employee who is still with the company today.” Starting at the grassroots level of Woodford Car Hire gave Essa a firsthand understanding of the customer experience and the daily operations of a car hire business. His foundational experience at the front desk has remained a core element of his leadership style as CEO, giving him insights into every aspect of the customer experience and operations. Commenting on his purpose Essa says, “My purpose is very much similar to that of the company – I want to provide value to every person that I come into contact with through our business,” he says. Essa’s philosophy is grounded in creating positive impacts not only for customers but also for his team and business partners. “Whether it’s our people, our customers, or our suppliers – everything we come across, touch, or feel, we’ve got to make this world better than it was before we got here. We have not lived if we have not added value,” he shares passionately. Among many achievements, Essa highlights a significant milestone with pride: “I feel that becoming a partner of Enterprise (the world’s largest car rental company) in southern Africa was a momentous achievement in our history.” This partnership with a global industry leader represents the Woodford Group’s commitment to excellence and its reputation within the car rental industry. However, Essa’s vision of accomplishment goes beyond accolades and partnerships. He says, “What would make me feel the most proud and the most accomplished would be when every single customer and employee is completely satisfied with our business.” BE HUMBLE Reflecting on words of wisdom that have guided him, Essa shares a profound piece of advice from his late brother, the former CEO of Woodford. “One of the pieces of advice was, ‘Be humble. Take a moment and be grateful for what you have,’” he recalls. Essa believes that gratitude is often overlooked in the fast-paced world of business. “The further and faster a journey goes, the easier it is to forget gratitude,” he notes. “We tend to only think in terms of what we don’t have and what we still need to achieve. Stopping every once in a while to be grateful is something that, I hope, grounds me and reminds me to be humble,” Essa adds. In the ever-evolving business world, challenges are constant, and Essa’s journey has been no exception. Reflecting on his approach to adversity, Essa says, “We have new challenges every single day. It’s often the case where every new challenge feels like it’s the greatest one we’ve faced up to that point.” For Essa, facing obstacles is about resilience and a determined mindset. He shares his strategy: “I don’t know which was my greatest, but I do know that I’m not the type to rest until we’ve put the challenge to bed. We pray, we prepare, and we then face each one head-on. The minute you believe that you can do something is the moment you’ve solved half of it.” Essa’s approach to overcoming challenges has enabled the Woodford Group to navigate difficult situations and to grow. FORWARD THINKING Essa emphasises the importance of resilience and optimism when motivating his team, especially in challenging times. “We are a resilient bunch that appreciates everything we have rather than looking back at what we could have had,” he explains. This outlook helps his team stay focused and energised, even when facing conflicts or obstacles. Essa believes that forward-thinking and positivity are key to keeping morale high. “Everything around us looks positive, despite the scenario,” he adds. Essa finds inspiration in results, a driving factor that influences his leadership and decision- making. “I’m a results-driven person, so I’m very much inspired by results. Good or bad, exceeded or missed targets, success or failure; the results inspire the efforts and decisions required,” he says. He also draws inspiration from nature, describing how, “the vastness of it brings things back into perspective and makes it all seem so small. It helps me try to do even more and take on more.” As a CEO of a KwaZulu-Natal born company, Essa is deeply committed to contributing to the province’s growth and development over the next five years. He explains Woodford’s goal: “Our vision at Woodford is to bring mobility solutions to all.” Essa hopes to expand the company’s footprint across KZN, offering mobility solutions to enable people to “move, grow, and thrive through our services and footprint.” Essa lives by the motto: “A winner is a dreamer that never gives up.” This saying encapsulates his journey, reflecting the resilience and determination that have defined his leadership at Woodford. With a focus gratitude and relentless pursuit of his dreams, Essa is poised to lead the Woodford Group to new heights. Previous Next
- Rajesh Lutchman | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Rajesh Lutchman chief executive officer of Siyaka Steeped in the entrepreneurial spirit of South Africa’s East Coast, Rajesh Lutchman has spent over three decades leading with vision, determination, and a relentless work ethic. As chief executive officer of Siyaka, Rajesh has grown the business from a small, dedicated team into a thriving, multi-site enterprise with operations in Durban, Johannesburg, Mauritius, and strategic representation in all major hubs primarily servicing southern Africa and East Africa. Siyaka is a trusted name in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, providing high-quality printed packaging solutions. From snack packets to detergents and beverages, products with Siyaka’s packaging line the shelves of retail stores across southern Africa – many consumers have likely held a Siyaka-printed item in their hands without even realising it. “I started with a small team,” Rajesh recalls, “many of whom are still with the company today. Honesty and integrity have shaped our culture. We’ve built a family, bound by a common vision: delivering value-engineered packaging with purpose.” CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT Rajesh’s drive for perfection was evident from an early age. For him, printing artwork on paper was never enough – he envisioned packaging that combined consistency, durability, and artisan-like quality at scale. That philosophy remains at the heart of Siyaka’s operations. Navigating the complexities of the manufacturing world requires more than operational excellence. It calls for foresight, adaptability, and the ability to mitigate risks and remove roadblocks. “You need to see the end at the beginning,” Rajesh says, “and map the path with precision.” Change is the only constant in the packaging and printing industry – a reality that has led Rajesh on a global journey across Europe and the Americas in pursuit of innovative solutions and cuttingedge technologies. His goal? To enhance the lives of consumers while creating sustainable, wasteefficient packaging that contributes to a healthier planet. Rajesh is driven not only by curiosity for processes, but by a deep respect for the people behind them. “My passion has always been in developing teams – nurturing a culture where individuals are empowered to thrive and contribute meaningfully to continuous improvement.” Siyaka remains grounded in the same core principles it held at inception: alignment among stakeholders, collaborative problem-solving, and a culture where the best ideas win. Rajesh fosters an environment of psychological safety, co-creation, and shared accountability. LEAVING A LEGACY Beyond Siyaka, Rajesh now sits on the board of various industries, including a property development and management portfolio and an investment entity. But for him, success has never been about the numbers. “The greatest investment you can make,” he reflects, “is in something that outlasts you. For me, it’s about leaving a legacy – one that improves the lives of employees, families, suppliers, customers, and consumers alike.” At Siyaka, succession and leadership development are not taken lightly. “As part of our family tradition, each of our children is encouraged to first gain experience in the open market following their tertiary qualification. Only thereafter, should they express the desire to join the business, do we have that conversation,” explained Rajesh. Following this principle, his two elder sons, Mikhail Lutchman and Luan Lutchman, have both joined the organisation– Luan most recently, following his tenure at Investec. Grooming tomorrow’s leadership is a profound responsibility. “In passing on what we refer to as the ‘holy grail’, we place strong emphasis on continual improvement (CI) – a principle we uphold alongside innovation, accountability, and strategic thinking.” SOUL OF A FAMILY BUSINESS While the organisation is structured and mirrors the operational discipline of a corporate entity, Siyaka proudly retain the agility and soul of a family business. Swift, decisive action on emerging opportunities has long been one of its key differentiators. Family remains a central pillar. “Every quarter, we retreat as a family to a remote destination – a tradition that serves as a reset, fostering harmony and alignment across both personal and professional spheres,” explains Rajesh. “Our business endeavours are united by a shared vision and long-term commitment. We remain optimistic, guided by a clear five-year outlook and a focus on delivering lasting impact in emerging markets. Challenges persist, but so do opportunities – and there is much to be done by the next generation of industry leaders.” Over the years, Rajesh and his team have been honoured with numerous accolades, a testament to their dedication and excellence, and the values we stand for. He comments, “We remain driven by purpose, united in our mission, and committed to excellence –today, and for the future.” In conclusion Rajesh says that his business philosophy is guided by his mantra which is: “Question the status quo. Dare to change it.” Previous Next
- Portio Dlamini | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Portio Dlamini Portio Dlamini is the managing director of the Emakheni Group Portio Dlamini is the managing director of the Emakheni Group, a company she founded over ten years ago. The main division of the group focuses on cleaning and industrial solutions, with plans for future subsidiaries. As managing director, Portio oversees the overall operations, implements strategic initiatives, ensures departmental efficiency, and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders. Reflecting on her roots, she shares, “I was born and bred in a small village called Soffelton at Impendle, about 100km from Pietermaritzburg.” Portio was raised by her grandparents while her mother, a teacher, continued her studies. Though growing up without a father presented challenges, she remembers her childhood as mostly pleasant. Portio matriculated at Pholela High School. She pursued a diploma and then a degree in chemical engineering at the Mangosuthu University of Technology and Durban University of Technology (DUT) respectively. Portio’s formal career began at Sappi Mandini, a pulp and paper company, where she served as an intern. This opportunity was part of a bursary programme she had been awarded during university. Her intern- ship as a process technician lasted 12 months and provided invaluable experience. She later joined Sasol as a process technician, where she continued to build her industry knowledge. PERSONAL CHALLENGES Reflecting on the foundation of Emakheni Group, Portio credits her decade-long experience in the manufacturing industry, where she was exposed to a variety of departments and operational insights. However, as a young graduate, she faced significant personal challenges, including identity struggles and poor self-image – issues that stemmed largely from growing up without a father. Only after seeking counselling and overcoming these obstacles did Portio find purpose in life. Portio’s decision to create Emakheni Group was driven by a desire to empower others, particularly those facing marginalisation. While working in the industry, she encountered cleaning contractors and observed their struggles, which often affected their service delivery. The goal was to show cleaners and general workers that their roles could be stepping stones to greater opportunities, not lifelong limitations. Portio notes: “We’ve helped them to dream more and look beyond being a cleaner. We help them understand that they can study further, start a business, or pursue other career paths.” This investment in their growth has led to boosted morale and improved service delivery. Portio sees this as a symbiotic relationship that benefits both employees and clients. For Portio, transitioning from being an employee to an employer and successfully running Emakheni stand out as major milestones in her life. Sustaining a business for ten years, she believes, is a testament to the hard work and support from countless individuals who have contributed to her journey. Among the lessons Portio has learned over the years, one piece of advice stands out: “Success is 80% preparation and 20% opportunity.” This wisdom has had a profound impact on her approach to both personal and business growth. “In the first three to four years of our business, when opportunities were limited, I continued to build the business, increase our capacity, and strengthen our systems,” she shares. She sought guidance, bolstered the company’s customer base, and ensured that Emakheni Group was ready to act when new opportunities arose. By applying this principle, the company became competent, compliant, and well- positioned to step confidently into new ventures. FACING CHALLENGES Portio recalls the initial challenges of starting her business as she had no clear understanding of how to run a business. “I lacked insight into our potential customer base and had minimal awareness of the competition,” she shares. However, she said, “I was fortunate to have strong leaders guiding me, instilling in me the principles that later became instrumental in my own leadership style.” Through mentorship, she learned strategies to manage teams effectively, applying these lessons to her company. She prioritises communication and transparency, aligning her team with the company’s vision and ensuring that everyone understands their contributions. A vital lesson Portio has learned is the importance of cultivating a supportive and positive company culture, which is reinforced through regular team meetings and personal interactions. This enables the organisation to face difficulties with unity and focus on the bigger picture. Portio’s inspiration comes from various sources. An influential figure in her life was her spiritual mentor, the late Dr Basil Tryon. "His guidance was instrumental during the early stages of my business, helping me to discover my purpose and break through personal and professional limitations,” Portio explains. David White, a businessman she met through an ESD (Enterprise and Supplier Development) programme facilitated by the SA Home Loans Foundation (called Sekela) and BusinessFit, had a profound influence. “His mentorship taught me invaluable lessons about entrepreneurial mindsets at various stages of growth – from startup to corporate scale,” she says. She also gained valuable insights in other ESD programmes, such as Raizcorp, where she completed NQF level 5 in entrepreneurship. However, Portio says, “What inspires me most is witnessing transformation – seeing individuals rise above challenging circumstances to improve their lives and reach new levels of achievement. It is this vision of growth and empowerment that keeps me motivated.” Portio’s current aim is to enter new supply chains in the industrial and commercial sectors, scaling the business to compete in wider markets. Beyond her own company, Portio envisions increased collaboration between small enterprises and large corporations in KwaZulu-Natal to create a robust ecosystem that benefits all. Portio lives by a powerful motto from one of her mentors: ‘If you raise the inner status of a man, then that inner status will eventually transform his outward life’. “Focusing on personal growth has allowed me to overcome challenges and achieve progress, not only in my career but in all areas of life,” she concludes. - Gerald Wells | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Gerald Wells Gerald Wells is the owner Gerald Wells Hair Professionals Gerald Wells has been a leading hair stylist and businessman for over 30 years. Gerald grew up in Westville and attended Westville Boys High School. Initially, his sights were set on being interior designer, he recalls. By chance, he found himself drawn into the hairdressing profession, a field he would quickly fall in love with. Gerald’s entry into hairdressing was a decision that would set the course for a long and successful career. He began as an apprentice in Durban, learning the craft and honing his skills. “It wasn’t something I planned, but once I started, I knew it was what I wanted to do,” he says. His early experiences in the industry taught him not just the technical skills of hairdressing but also the importance of client relationships and business acumen. His career was marked by a thirst for knowledge, so he decided to broaden his horizons by working overseas. “I wanted to see how things were done elsewhere, to learn from the best,” he explains. This led him to London and Australia, where he was exposed to new techniques, styles, and business practices that were ahead of their time in South Africa. “Those years were invaluable,” he notes. “I learned so much about the industry, but also about myself and what I wanted to achieve.” Upon returning to South Africa, Gerald was ready to take on the challenge of building his own business. He started with a single salon, but he says, “I knew I wanted to create something bigger, something that could grow and evolve.” SERVICE IS EVERYTHING Gerald’s business grew steadily, thanks to his commitment to quality and his focus on building strong relationships with clients. “Service is every- thing,” he emphasises. “People come to you not just for a haircut, but for the experience, the connection.” Over the years, Gerald’s business ventures expanded significantly. The 28 stores that Gerald has opened throughout his career consist of the following: 18 Splush stores, four GHD hair hardware kiosks, three salons and three barber shops. They include: two salons at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre – Gerald Wells Hair and The Barber by Gerald Wells and GHD Hair Hardware retail stores at both Ballito Lifestyle Centre and Gateway Theatre of Shopping. Despite his success, Gerald has faced challenges. One was relocating his flagship store, a move that required careful planning and execution. “It was a stressful time,” he admits. “We had to make sure our clients stayed with us and that the transition was smooth.” The relocation was a success, thanks to Gerald’s attention to detail and his strong relationship with his clients. Another challenge came with the financial difficulties surrounding Splush, a chain of hairdressing retail outlets were opened across South Africa. “Splush was a great idea, but like any business, it had its ups and downs,” he reflects. “You have to stay focused on your goals and be prepared to make tough decisions.” Personal challenges have also been part of Gerald’s journey. Going through a divorce was a difficult period for him, but he remained focused on his business and his family. “It wasn’t easy, but I learned a lot about myself and what really matters,” he shares. PASSION IS CONTAGIOUS For Gerald, keeping his team motivated is an important aspect of his business. He believes in leading by example and fostering a positive work environment. “Passion is contagious,” he says. “If you’re excited about what you do, your team will be too.” Education is an essential component of his approach. Gerald plays a key role in his company’s training academy, where he focuses on empower- ing new talent. “Mentorship is so important, he emphasizes. “I want to help others achieve their dreams, just like others helped me when I was starting out.” Being actively involved in the business is crucial for Gerald.“I try to be hands-on, to be there for my team when they need me,” he explains. This involvement helps to build camaraderie and trust within the team. Gerald also emphasises the importance of acknowledging the hard work people put in and to celebrate achievements together. SOMETHING UNIQUE In addition to his salons and retail outlets, Gerald has his own haircare range, which is stocked in DisChem stores. “Creating my own product line was something I’d always wanted to do,” he says. “It’s been a great way to extend the brand and offer something unique to our clients.” Beyond the world of hairdressing, Gerald is involved in Brand Boys, a company he co-founded with his son Wesley Wells and a friend. “I love the challenge of starting something new, of seeing an idea come to life,” he explained. Despite his busy professional life, Gerald makes time for his personal passions, including travelling and exploring beauty, health, and food globally. “Travelling is a great way to recharge and find inspiration,” he says. Family is a central part of Gerald’s life. His greatest accomplishment, he says, is being a father to his three children, Wesley, Dylan, and Jade. “My family means everything to me,” he shares. Balancing the demands of running multiple businesses with family life isn’t always easy, but Gerald makes it a priority. “At the end of the day, they’re the reason I do what I do.” Looking back on his career, Gerald takes pride in what he has accomplished but remains humble about his success. “I’ve been very fortunate,” he reflects. “But it’s not just about luck – it’s about hard work, passion, and being willing to take risks.” As he looks to the future, Gerald is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, saying: “There’s always more to learn, more to achieve.” The motto that Gerald lives by is, “Do unto others as you like done unto yourself.” He explains, “I’ve been very fortunate throughout life to receive handsome rewards for the work I have done, but I really feel whatever you give out in life, it’ll come back tenfold.” Previous Next

- Xolani Mbambo | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Xolani Mbambo Xolani Mbambo is the group chief executive officer of Grindrod Limited Xolani Mbambo, a seasoned executive, was appointed the group chief executive officer of Grindrod Limited, a transport and logistics company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, on 1 January 2023. Xolani is also a director of various businesses in which Grindrod has a shareholding including the chairperson of Maputo Port Development Company. Xolani completed his primary education at Kwa- Ngcolosi, outside Hillcrest, where he grew up. The area which is home to the famous Inanda Dam which is a stage two finish for the Dusi canoe marathon held annually in February. He then matriculated at uMqhawe High School. Xolani secured a bursary to continue his studies at the University of Natal in Durban, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in education and a postgraduate diploma in accounting. His studies did not end there as Xolani went on to become a qualified chartered accountant and completed the Advanced Management Programme from Harvard Business School. He is known for his integrity and ability to translate strategic themes into actionable strategic and business plans. Xolani was nominated for the 2020 Chief Financial Officer Awards. VARIOUS ROLES Coming from humble beginnings, Xolani commented that his first informal job was as a gardener in the suburb of Manor Gardens, a walking distance from the same university he would later attend. His first formal job was when he secured employment as an article clerk at Coopers and Lybrand, now known as PwC. Prior to joining Grindrod in March 2013, Xolani spent over a decade in the mining industry in various roles spanning accounting and finance, mining project execution, mining business performance analysis (iron ore, coal, and manganese), and coal marketing. During this time, he worked in Anglo American’s offices in Johannesburg and London, its then mining operation in Mpumalanga, and its gas exploration office in Gaborone. Having worked as Grindrod’s Freight Services CFO since 2013, Xolani accepted a group financial director role in September 2018. Transitioning from the group financial director role of Grindrod Limited to CEO involved working in the operations at the coal face, which was crucial in understanding the business. In February 2021, he returned to Freight Services to assume the CEO responsibilities and two years later assumed the role of CEO of Grindrod Limited group. Given Xolani’s various roles in Grindrod, it is unsurprising that the accomplishment that makes him the proudest is his appointment as Grindrod Limited’s first African CEO. Xolani says his purpose in this position is aligned to that of the company he now leads. He explained, “The purpose, particularly for Grindrod Limited is to promote Africa’s trade with the world and to touch the lives of the communities in which we operate. That is what drives us. And I am hoping that is what drives all our employees and colleagues throughout the organisation.” HARD WORK PAYS OFF Reflecting on the best advice he has ever received and how it has influenced his journey, Xolani is quick to respond with the words: “Hard work pays off.” Xolani has taken this advice to heart, which has steered his career well, noting that he has been acknowledged for his many efforts and dedication over the years. Reflecting on what he recognises in successful people, he said they have a positive attitude. They are continuously looking for solutions and ways to improve their work. This attitude impacts every- thing in their lives, both on a personal front and in the work environment. “You can’t teach attitude and work ethic,” he explains. While Xolani has faced several challenges over the years, the biggest challenge he has ever overcome was undoubtably the impact of Covid-19 in 2020. He commented that navigating the effects of Covid-19 was very challenging from a business perspective. “Operational closures due to Covid- restrictions had the potential to negatively impact job security for our colleagues. So, to navigate this crisis, we, together with the management team, implemented various cost containment and cash preservation measures to ensure that the business survived the impact of Covid-19,” explained Xolani. CLARITY OF PURPOSE Xolani added, “What I’ve realised is that in all these challenges, the clarity of purpose and strategy combined with the culture of recognition for high performance is what really keeps the team motivated.” Speaking of who or what inspires him, Xolani says that it is undoubtedly a ‘who’, as he has been inspired by his mother throughout his life. “My mother single-handedly raised three of us and provided us with the best education she could afford. She made excellent choices for me at my younger age, and my two sisters’ education and progress in our careers. Unfortunately, one of my sisters passed on.” POSITIVE IMPACT Commenting on his vision for Grindrod in the next five years, Xolani is enthusiastic about the company’s future growth. He said, “Actually, it would be very fulfilling for me to see Grindrod becoming the largest listed company in KwaZulu-Natal and achieving this through its purpose of promoting Africa’s trade with the world.” In addition, Xolani said, “Success is not only about profits. We must uplift communities in and around our operations and make a difference in society.” In his concluding comment, Xolani says that his motto echoes the advice that he values: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Previous Next
- Pat Moodley | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Pat Moodley Pat Moodley is the regional manager for the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Pat Moodley is the regional manager for the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The IDC is the largest development financing institution in South Africa and across the continent. After completing his BCom accounting degree, Pat’s professional journey started off at Standard Bank. He moved his way up the ranks and left the bank as a small medium enterprise manager to join the IDC. Over the years, Pat has completed a number of leadership training programmes, including an MBA and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) Global Leadership course. Pat’s career with the IDC spans over 24 years. One of his greatest wishes during this time is to extend the reach of the IDC within KZN. SME DEVELOPMENT One of Pat’s key objectives in his role as a regional manager is to ensure that the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector grows in KZN. The office he leads forms part of the IDC’s Small Business Finance unit, and they consider all funding applications up to twenty million rands, from start to finish. Once an application has been approved, the IDC then disburses that loan and through its partnership funding model, works together with the SME to ensure that the business continues to function optimally and hopefully expand, creating much needed jobs within the province. Commenting on his role Pat says, "I’m very passionate about SME development, especially in my home province KZN. There’s lots of potential and impact in funding businesses. I think overall, my proudest moment is funding businesses and seeing them grow organically over a period of time. When I drive past any of our clients’ premises, I am proud to say that these are businesses IDC has funded. Maybe in my old age or in my retirement, I will be able to tell my grandkids there’s the business IDC funded and from humble beginnings it has grown over the years to be a leading company in the province and the country.” AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH Following his previous work experiences, Pat has always been driven to be an effective leader. He explains that during his early career he encountered many bad leadership styles and unpleasant habits, which were patterns of behaviour that he did not want to use to lead his team. “I learnt from the poor leadership examples that I was exposed to and have improved on these. The scenario in the corporate world is changing. Back in the day, leadership was often like a dictatorship, and it’s changed. I told myself that I won’t be like those leaders. I need to be a different type of leader to ensure that I get the most out of my team and keep them motivated as well. Today, leadership is about being part of that team, it’s not a top-down approach. It’s an inclusive approach and that’s how you get buy-in from your team and create a win- win situation for everyone.” Pat is not motivated by external sources. He says, “I don’t benchmark myself against anyone. I set my own standards and I deliver on those standards, which are at a very high level. You must be an individual and make a difference based on your own motivation and your own contribution. I don’t need to aspire to be someone else.” He added that honesty, integrity and abiding by the rules are important to him. “I’m a rules person but there must be flexibility, as long as you are within the parameters that have been set. Being in the financial sector and funding in particular, compliance, honesty and integrity is the first consideration, you then jockey behind the company.” A CONVERSATION Pat commented a major challenge is that some- times his humbleness can be mistaken as a weakness. He explains, “You don’t have to be forceful as a leader in the corporate world, but because you’re not forceful in your approach, the outside world does not take you seriously, that’s what I want to change.” Pat continues that you should be able to direct and conduct business through having a conversation. Conversely, history or the likes in the corporate world want you to be in command. “We’re not in the army, you can be firm, but you don’t have to be a dictator or have a forceful nature. Sometimes those challenges do crop up from time to time because people expect you to behave in that way as a leader,” he expanded. For Pat interacting with people is a process and about building a relationship. “It’s about sitting around the table and saying this is what we can do. How do we find middle ground and see the end picture?” He commented, “I want to be me, do my work, but do it properly and correctly. Power provides a false sense of respect. I still want to be a person in my own right when I leave the IDC and not be defined by my previous title.” UNITY WITHIN COMMUNITY While the province of KwaZulu-Natal has gone through a number of strikes, unrest and flooding, Pat’s vision for the future is that everyone will come together to form a public private partnership that will see the economy grow. In order for this to occur, Pat believes that everyone needs to do away with the red tape. “To see that growth in the economy, everyone has to play their part, from local government to provincial government, to large corporates to small businesses. We have to club together with one vision if we want to see the growth in the economy and create jobs to counter unemployment and alleviate poverty. Everyone needs to come together to make sure that we can fund businesses and we can use corporate social investments to get the desired outcomes, grow the economy and contribute to the well-being of the community.” In conclusion, says Pat, “My motto in life is ‘your word must be your bond.’ If I can find that in a person or in a company, I’m all out there to support that company or person.” Previous Next
