  • IBV International Vaults, SAFEGUARDING WEALTH, HERITAGE AND CONNECTIONSIn an age where the preservation of wealth, legacy and privacy has become more critical than ever, IBV International Vaults (IBV) has positioned itself as the world’s most exclusive provider of private vaults. Founded in South Africa by visionary entrepreneur Ashok Sewnarain, the company has grown into a global symbol of trust, security and discretion. Pioneering the First Private Vault in South Africa The journey began in 2004 when Sewnarain opened South Africa’s first and only private safe deposit vault facility at Umhlanga’s Gateway Mall. The location was carefully chosen for its proximity to major business and residential hubs in KwaZulu-Natal. The mall’s structural integrity also provided the ideal framework for the stringent security standards that IBV required. The result was a facility that not only served local clients but also set a benchmark for what a modernday private vault should embody. Expansion into South Africa’s Financial Heart Following this success, IBV expanded into the financial district with a second facility at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. This strategic move placed IBV at the centre of South Africa’s business capital, rapidly attracting a new tier of clients. From there, IBV’s reputation grew nationally and internationally. Today, the company operates vaults in London, Switzerland, Dubai and South Africa, catering to a global membership of more than 40,000 individuals. State-of-the-Art Vaults At the core of IBV’s offering are its safe deposit vaults, modern fortresses constructed from steel-reinforced concrete and secured with multi-layered systems that blend advanced technology with human expertise. Every facility is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by highly trained professionals. For clients, this provides complete peace of mind that their valuables are protected to the highest possible standard. Customised Security and Access IBV invests heavily in cutting-edge electronic designs and bespoke security systems. Biometric verification, digital tracking and regular surveillance upgrades ensure that its facilities remain aligned with global standards. Storage is tailored to client needs, with four locker sizes available to accommodate documents, heirlooms and high-value items. Each locker is fitted with a duallock mechanism, reflecting IBV’s meticulous attention to detail. Meeting a Global Demand IBV’s rapid international expansion reflects the growing demand for reliable private vault services. In many regions, banks have discontinued safe deposit boxes or offer only limited services that lack the discretion required by high-net-worth individuals. IBV has filled this gap with facilities that are not only highly secure but also symbolic of prestige and exclusivity. Balancing Technology and the Human Touch While IBV continues to invest in technological advancement, it recognises that true assurance requires more than machines. Skilled professionals oversee operations, provide personalised service and deliver reassurance that technology alone cannot achieve. A Community of Influence IBV’s vision extends beyond protecting wealth to fostering a global community through IBV Privé. This is an elite membership platform that combines lifestyle, influence and cultural engagement. IBV Privé provides access to carefully curated experiences and bespoke privileges designed to enrich the lives of its members. • Imraan Noorbhai | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Imraan Noorbhai Imraan Noorbhai is the Head of Personal and Private Banking for Standard Bank in KwaZulu-Natal Imraan Noorbhai, the Head of Personal and Private Banking for Standard Bank in KwaZulu-Natal, has a diverse background in finance and banking. He began his educational journey at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he studied accounting. After completing honours, Imraan started his articles at a medium-sized firm called Desai Jadwat Incorporated. “It was there that I really learned to be an entrepreneur,” he recalls. Following his articles, Imraan earned his Associate General Accounting certification from SAICA, along-side his professional accounting certification. His first job after qualifying as an accountant was with Competition Motors, which was a challenge for him as it was his first experience of running a business. “Within two months of being employed, I was seconded to run the entire Johannesburg operation,” Imraan explains. As general manager at Competition Motors Johannesburg, the company’s largest operation at that time, he was responsible for overseeing finance, operations, and some of the technical aspects of the business. “It was a huge learning curve, but a wonderful experience,” he reflects, describing his experience of managing complex operations. Imraan’s career continued to evolve as he moved to the machinery and equipment division of the company, which focused on the importation of large motor manufacturing components. After spending a year and a half gaining exposure to the import- export industry and the intricacies of motor manufacturing, he saw an opportunity to pivot into financial services. TRANSITION TO STANDARD BANK In search of new opportunities Imraan joined Standard Bank as Head of Measurement, building balanced scorecards and productivity tools to manage and measure banker performance across Retail and Business Banking. Imraan’s progress at Standard Bank was swift, within three years he was promoted to head of Finance for Retail Banking and later Executive Head of Finance for Retail and Business Banking, Client Coverage South Africa. In 2010, Imraan considered moving to a more business-oriented role. Around this time, Lincoln Mali, one of Standard Bank’s leaders, offered him a position as Head of Retail Banking in KwaZulu- Natal. Over the course of 14 years, Imraan has held multiple senior roles at Standard Bank, including Provincial Head of KwaZulu-Natal, Head of Retail and Business Banking, and now Head of Personal and Private Banking. His journey through various business units and customer propositions within Standard Bank has been marked by numerous accomplishments. Another of Imraan’s key achievements was spear- heading the launch of Sharia banking at Standard Bank in 2014. Today, the bank proudly holds the second-largest market share of Sharia banking in South Africa. “It was one of those moments that I always treasure,” he says, reflecting on the vision, collaboration, and energy that went into making the proposition a success. FULFILLING ASPIRATIONS Having worked at Standard Bank for 27 years, Imraan aligns closely with the organisation’s purpose: “Africa is our home; we drive our growth.” He believes deeply in improving lives and fulfilling aspirations through banking, both for customers and staff. “My purpose is about seeing my customers transition through various challenges as they develop their businesses to new heights,” he explains. “It is also about seeing my staff excel from cradle to grave in terms of their career trajectory within the bank.” Imraan’s leadership is defined by empathy, humanity, justice, and honesty. He believes these principles are crucial in leading teams effectively. “The fundamental departure point that is lacking in many organisations, locally and globally, is how we lead our teams with empathy and respect,” he asserts. This belief was further solidified during an immersion in Kenya, where he was inspired by the words of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Kenya: “Africa is blessed with problems, and we have an opportunity to turn those problems into solutions.” For Imraan, this meant viewing every challenge as an opportunity for prosperity. GENERATE MIRACLES Reflecting on the challenges faced in KwaZulu- Natal, a province that has seen its share of adversity, Imraan attributes the success of his team to resilience and empowerment which is unparalleled in terms of how they can adapt to the changing environment and produce exceptional results. Imraan believes in empowering his teams by providing them with the tools and clearing obstacles from their path. “If we empower our teams, they will generate miracles,” he says. When discussing his inspirations, Imraan mentions both religious and corporate influences. “On a personal level, my major inspiration is the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) who is the living example of how one should live one’s life in terms of values and principles,” he says. In the corporate sphere, he looks up to the “giants of Standard Bank,” past and present, such as Lincoln Mali, Peter Schlebusch, Funeka Montjane, and Sim Tshabalala. “These are the great leaders on whose shoulders we stand today,” he reflects, adding that they have helped shape an organisation that has stood strong for over 160 years and continue to shape the future. Imraan’s vision for KwaZulu-Natal and its people is one of prosperity and growth. “We see ourselves as a gateway to Africa and to the world,” he declares. He believes the province’s rich diversity, natural beauty and strategic location has a lot more to offer and can be harnessed so that everyone benefits. “I believe in leading with humanity, justice, and empathy,” he concludes. “And if we adopt this approach, business results will follow.” Previous Next

  • Ashok Sewnarain | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Ashok Sewnarain Ashok Sewnarain is the chairman of IBV International Vaults Group Ashok Sewnarain serves as the chairman of IBV International Vaults Group, a global leader in exclusive vault services. Born in Mayville and educated at Burnwood High School in Sydenham, Ashok’s journey to entrepreneurship began early. His first job was working alongside his father in the family’s real estate business. While doing this, Ashok attended university at night to pursue a bachelor of accounting degree. However, after six months, balancing work, studies, and his relationship with his girlfriend proved too challenging, and he made the difficult decision to leave university. “I had to choose between continuing university, working for my dad, or breaking up with my girlfriend. I chose the easiest option,” Ashok explained. Despite leaving school, his time spent learning from his father provided him with valuable insights into the property business. However, Ashok’s ambitions extended beyond the family business, and he soon set out to create his own path, launching Randall’s Finance Brokers which was a small operation with just one desk and three chairs. Here, he offered financial services to businesses and private property developers, marking the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey. BUSINESS ACUMEN AND GROWTH Reflecting on his career, Ashok recalls starting Randall’s Finance Brokers at just 24 years old. From there, he moved into some property development and later expanded into the hotel industry, launching the Bayside Hotels group. His business drive eventually led him to establish IBV International Vaults in 2004, inspired by the long waitlist for Standard Bank vault services. “I identified a gap in the market where people needed secure, high-end vaults, and banks weren’t meeting that demand,” Ashok explained. Since then, IBV has grown into an international brand with nine branches, including the most exclusive vaults in London and Dubai. “It’s been 20 years, and the business continues to grow by filling a market need and offering exceptional services,” he added. LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS Among his many career milestones, Ashok cites negotiating with Barclays Bank to acquire half of their branch in Mayfair, London, to develop a vault as a particularly significant achievement. “Securing a vault in Mayfair, the most prestigious location in London, was a huge challenge, but one of the most rewarding,” he recalled. Another notable accomplishment was IBV being recognised by the Guinness World Records for hosting the IBV Supercar Club Charity Parade. Yet for Ashok, every small victory is just as important. “Business is a constant challenge, but with each challenge comes achievement,” he emphasised. His father’s advice to be courageous and to keep business simple has remained a guiding principle throughout his journey. AN ONGOING JOURNEY OF LEADERSHIP Ashok believes that the constant challenge of business growth and development is one of the biggest hurdles any entrepreneur faces. “Challenges come at you constantly, but the key is resilience and the ability to learn and grow from setbacks,” he said. His approach to business involves not just focusing on wins but also finding value in losses and using those experiences to become stronger. Leadership is central to Ashok’s philosophy, and he highlights the importance of clear communication with his team. “Any team needs leadership, direction, and a shared vision. It’s vital to keep the team motivated by ensuring they understand the destination,” he said. By fostering a sense of purpose and unity, Ashok ensures his team stays aligned and driven toward success. VISION FOR THE FUTURE Ashok’s family is his greatest source of inspiration. “My wife, children, and grandson motivate me every day,” he shared. He believes that health, family, and spirituality are the cornerstones of life, while business remains a project. This mindset keeps him grounded and focused on what truly matters, despite his professional success. Looking ahead, Ashok is optimistic about the future of business in KwaZulu-Natal. “The opportunities here are incredible, and despite the economic challenges, I believe that with the right approach, businesses in KwaZulu-Natal have a bright future,” he said. He views the region as a land of opportunity and is excited about the potential for growth and development. Ashok’s personal motto, “Fear no one, respect everyone”, reflects his approach to life and business. It underscores his belief in the importance of courage, humility, and respect as essential qualities for success. Previous Next

For his higher education, Andrew attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal, which was both close to home and his university of choice. “I pursued my BCom and then completed my honours to qualify as a chartered accountant,” he explained. This laid the foundation for his career in finance and business. After qualifying, Andrew stepped straight into the practical world through his articles, securing a position with Deloitte. Starting as a first-year clerk, Andrew embraced the responsibilities of entry- level tasks. “I did all the menial activities that first- year clerks do and gradually moved up through the ranks,” he shared. By his third year, he was responsible for leading audits. “Once my articles were completed, I officially qualified as a chartered accountant,” he said. STRATEGIC GUIDANCE Andrew’s motivation is rooted in both financial and strategic purposes. “Finance is important to me as a chartered accountant,” he explained. His main priority is ensuring the financial health of his business. “If a business is not doing well financially, it’s not sustainable,” he asserted. To him, the sustainability of a business means it can contribute positively to society and support its employees. He also expressed his passion for assisting small and medium enterprises: “I enjoy helping small businesses understand the difference between profit and cash flow.” By guiding them, he enables entrepreneurs to achieve greater financial and strategic stability. “I find joy in seeing businesses grow and succeed through strategic guidance and sound financial practices,” he said. Andrew is optimistic about the future of business in KwaZulu-Natal. “KZN is unique, especially after what we’ve been through in the past two years,” he noted, referring to the community’s resilience. He believes that the collaborative spirit in KZN will fuel growth. “The community here is very close- knit, and this collaboration is key to business success,” he explained. With a focus on attracting local and foreign investment, Andrew sees KZN flourishing. “I am excited to be part of that growth,” he said, noting the enthusiasm and determination of local entrepreneurs. Motivating a team, according to Andrew, involves ensuring that everyone understands their role and its significance. “If staff know how their work contributes to the business as a whole, they’re more motivated,” he explained. Encouraging pride in their contributions is key: “I want them to be proud of their work and ensure that when it’s passed on, it’s in the best condition possible.” Additionally, he believes in empowering his team by allowing them to make decisions and learn from their experiences. “Even if they make the wrong decision, it’s a learning opportunity that prepares them for the future,” he said. AN INCREDIBLE ACHIEVEMENT When asked about his proudest achievement, Andrew didn’t focus on career accolades but instead on family. “My biggest accomplishment is my family. I have a wonderful wife and three beautiful daughters,” he stated with pride. “Just watching them grow and develop into independent individuals is an incredible achievement for me.” His eldest daughter’s successful transition to university life is a particular point of pride: “Seeing her leave home, manage her own life, and thrive is immensely rewarding.” Reflecting on his greatest personal challenge, Andrew shared, “The biggest challenge I faced was when my eldest daughter was diagnosed with a serious heart condition when she was a nine-year- old.” He described the difficulty of being unable to take direct action during her treatment: “There was nothing I could do. She was in the hands of the doctors, and I had to learn to rely on faith.” This period tested his resilience and taught him valuable lessons about acceptance and trust. “The hardest part was recognising that some things are out of your control,” he said. Andrew finds inspiration in a timeless piece of advice: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” He explained, “Sometimes, when facing a daunting task, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But starting with that single step makes all the difference.” This approach has shaped his life, helping him tackle challenges methodically. “Once you’ve taken that first step, the path ahead becomes clearer,” he said. This advice has encouraged him to push through challenges without being paralysed by the enormity of tasks. Andrew credits much of his inspiration to his parents and a high school teacher. “I grew up in a stable home with parents who were always supportive,” he recalled. Their involvement and encouragement were invaluable. “My parents have been married for over 50 years, which is inspirational on its own,” he added. He also mentioned his high school accountancy teacher. “He inspired many students to pursue accountancy and made a significant impact,” Andrew said. Andrew says that his guiding principle comes from scripture. “When I was a boy, I had a verse on my wall from Proverbs 3:6: ‘In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will guide your paths,’” he shared. This verse has been a cornerstone of his life and a message he has passed on to his children. “It’s important to me to use God as my guide and mentor, and I truly believe He has led my path,” Andrew concluded. • Erlo Stegen | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Erlo Stegen In Tribute Erlo Hartwig Stegen, affectionately known as Baba Mfundisi, was the visionary founder and director of KwaSizabantu Mission. Born on 2 March 1935 to Carl and Irmgard Stegen on the family farm Paardefontein in KwaZulu- Natal, Erlo passed away on 26 September 2023 at the mission. Erlo’s life was marked by a sense of purpose and dedication to serving others. From a young age, he displayed an entrepreneurial spirit, always seeking ways to make money through planting and selling various goods. However, this early inclination toward business was overshadowed by his calling to preach the Gospel, particularly to the Zulu nation. Erlo’s calling to minister to the Zulu people was a journey that led him to forge a deep bond with the Zulu community. His ministry was characterised by a commitment to helping others, which became the cornerstone of his life’s work. This commitment led to the establishment of the KwaSizabantu Mission in 1970, following the purchase of a 140-hectare farm by Erlo and his brother. Over the decades, KwaSizabantu grew into a 540-hectare mission that became a beacon of hope and support for countless individuals. A THRIVING HUB OF ACTIVITY Today, the KwaSizabantu Mission is a thriving hub of activity, encompassing a school, a college, a counselling centre, all of which provide vital services to those in need. The mission also boasts a 10,000-seater amphitheatre, where various events and gatherings are hosted, further cementing the mission’s role as a centre of community life. In addition to its educational and humanitarian efforts, KwaSizabantu is home to several successful businesses that support the mission’s work and contribute to the local economy. These businesses include Radio Khwezi, an award-winning radio station that has become a trusted voice in the region, as well as a pasta factory, bakery, dairy, and coffee shop. The mission also operates Emseni Farming, which produces high-quality peppers and avocados supplied to retailers such as Woolworths and Spar. One of the mission’s notable enterprises is its dairy operation, which produces the well-known Bonlé yoghurt. This product, like many others from the mission, is a testament to Erlo’s vision of self- sustainability and community upliftment. Another venture is the production of aQuellé bottled water, a recognised brand throughout South Africa, which is manufactured at the mission’s facilities near Kranskop, about 60 km inland from Stanger. HELP AND GUIDANCE Erlo’s approach to the mission was rooted in his desire to uplift those around him. Erlo firmly believed that it was impossible to preach effectively to people who were hungry or in need. He actively involved others in his work, teaching them valuable skills and knowledge that would enable them to become self-sufficient. This approach ensured that the people he worked with were able to improve their own lives and those of their families. Erlo would often provide seedlings and farming supplies to encourage people to plant crops at their homes, ensuring that they had food on their tables and that their children could attend school without hunger, which had been a significant problem in the past. He would often personally visit homes to check on the progress of their planting and to offer his help and guidance. Erlo’s dedication to the mission was evident in the way he cared for his employees’ needs not just physically, but also spiritually and emotionally, embodying the role of a true servant leader. He was known for his hands-on approach, often working alongside his team. This leadership style earned him immense respect and loyalty from those who worked with him, as they saw him as someone who was not only willing to lead by example but also cared for their well-being. UNWAVERING DETERMINATION Erlo’s success as a leader can be attributed to his unwavering determination in pursuing the goals generated by his desire to help people. He was a man of great vision, always looking for new ways to expand the mission’s reach. This approach led to the establishment of many outstations of the mission, as well as the founding of numerous educational institutions, businesses, and humanitarian projects. Through his ministry, which spanned over 70 years, Erlo touched and changed the lives of millions, both in South Africa and around the world. The impact of Erlo’s work has generated public admiration resulting in numerous awards. Among these is the Robert W. Pierce Award for Christian Service, which he was co-awarded by World Vision International on 9 December 2007. This prestigious award is a testament to the global recognition of Erlo’s contributions to Christian service and humanitarain efforts. In 2013, he was also honoured with the Chancellor’s Medal by North-West University (NWU) for his extensive humanitarian work among poor rural communities in South Africa. Despite the many accolades, Erlo always remained humble and deeply committed to his faith as his calling was the driving force behind everything he did. The businesses he established at KwaSizabantu were not motivated by a desire for profit, but rather by the need to support the mission’s work and ensure its sustainability. These businesses also played a crucial role in uplifting the surrounding communities, providing employment, skills training, and essential services. Generating funds reflected Erlo’s belief that the resources made by the mission’s businesses should be used to further its humanitarian and spiritual goals. Throughout his life, Erlo faced numerous challenges, but he met each one with steadfast faith and resilience. One of the most significant challenges came during the Covid-19 pandemic when the mission faced a simultaneous media attack and boycott. Despite the difficulties, Erlo and the mission persevered, emerging stronger and more determined than ever before. He often spoke of the joy and fulfilment that comes from living a life dedicated to serving the Lord, emphasising that no other pursuit could offer the same value or satisfaction. Erlo’s life was a testament to the power of faith, dedication, and selflessness, and his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him and the countless lives he touched through his ministry. • Dr Kenny Naidoo | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Dr Kenny Naidoo Dr Kamalanathan (Kenny) Naidoo is the President of the Verulam Child Welfare Society Dr Kamalanathan (Kenny) Naidoo, the President of the Verulam Child Welfare Society, began his professional career as a high school mathematics teacher, teaching up to grade 12 at various schools across KwaZulu-Natal. Over time, he was promoted to the position of head of department for mathematics and eventually rose to become a principal and later, a superintendent of education. At the time of his retirement, he was overseeing 66 schools in the Pinetown district. In terms of educational qualifications, Dr Naidoo’s journey is both extensive and impressive. He began with a teachers’ diploma before pursuing a BCom degree at the University of South Africa. He furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), and later, a specialised Bachelor of Education in Educational Management. Not stopping there, in 2000, he enrolled for an MBA at the University of Durban-Westville, which he successfully completed. Dr Naidoo then went on to achieve a PhD in Education. While serving as a Superintendent of Education, he also completed a senior management course at Level 13. At the age of 64, he was nominated by the department to undertake a course in forensic investigation, which he also completed. Dr Naidoo dedicated 45 years to education before retiring in September 2020, at the age of 65. However, his contributions to society extend beyond education. While still working in education, in 2001, he was elected President of the Verulam Child Welfare Society. Reflecting on his purpose, Dr Naidoo explains that whether in education or welfare, his aim has always been to implement the policies of the organisation and give effect to its constitution. In his current role, he is focused on enforcing the Children’s Act (Act 38 of 2005) and, together with colleagues, maintaining tight financial controls within the organisation. This is critical as the society operates with a significant financial deficit, receiving a limited subsidy from the Department of Social Development. Dr Naidoo recalls the moment he learned that the organisation’s subsidy would be cut by 22,000 Rand per month due to budgetary constraints. This increased their operational deficit to around 122,000 Rand per month. Despite the economic downturn and reduced donations, the society has managed to navigate these challenges through the influence and support of its members, who come from various professional backgrounds, including the business community. PROACTIVE APPROACH One of the society’s proudest accomplishments is the development and implementation of the “Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsorship” programme, which encourages companies to donate to the organisation by providing them with a Section 18A certificate for tax benefits. Dr Naidoo credits his colleague, Mr Pat Moodley, for initiating this programme. Through this initiative, and the Spring Ball (initiated by the Nankhoo Family), the society has secured several sponsors, partially covering their deficit. Dr Naidoo credits the success of the Verulam Child Welfare Society to its proactive approach and innovative projects designed during strategic planning sessions, which have enabled the organisation to sustain itself despite operating with a significant financial shortfall. He hopes that by sharing the organisation’s story, more businesses will recognise the opportunity to support NGOs like theirs, especially given the potential tax benefits and the vital role these organisations play in complementing government efforts. Dr Naidoo shares that the best advice he has received on his journey is to avoid procrastination. “Procrastination is a thief of time,” he says, emphasising the importance of meeting deadlines and tackling tasks immediately. He believes in living each day as if it were his last and attributes his success to this philosophy. By prioritising prompt action, especially in tasks like writing letters to sponsors, Dr Naidoo ensures that the organisation stays ahead of the competition and maintains a proactive approach to fundraising. When asked about his personal motivation, Dr Naidoo states that passion is key. In his words, “If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, especially in the voluntary sector, you won’t be able to fulfil the objectives.” He notes that volunteerism in the community is declining and stresses the importance of being motivated by others. Dr Naidoo draws strength from figures like Mr KN Rajoo, who served as President of the Verulam Child Welfare Society for 23 years and remained with the organisation for 50 years. Rajoo’s dedication and leadership have been invaluable, providing mentorship and guidance to Dr Naidoo and others on the board. Mr Rajoo was also the architect, of the popular Charity Fair, a concept that is used by most NGOs today. Dr Naidoo believes that experiential knowledge is far more valuable than theoretical knowledge and credits his success to the wisdom shared by senior colleagues like Mr Rajoo. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT To keep his team motivated amidst these obstacles, Dr Naidoo emphasises the importance of positive reinforcement and emotional intelligence. He recognises that understanding body language and providing timely support to staff are crucial in maintaining a productive and content workforce. Additionally, the organisation is committed to fostering public awareness of children’s rights and conducts work- shops for educators to equip them with knowledge about the Children’s Act and related matters. These initiatives have proven beneficial in addressing and preventing child abuse and neglect in the community. Looking ahead, Dr Naidoo envisions a future where networking plays a critical role in overcoming challenges faced by non-profit organisations. He sees potential in connecting with businesses and international organisations that might offer funding and support to child welfare initiatives. For instance, through networking, the Verulam Child Welfare Society recently learned of an opportunity with the “Million Dollar Club” and received a generous donation of 4,000 USD, which provided significant financial relief. DEEP COMMITMENT In conclusion, Dr Naidoo’s life and career are characterised by a deep commitment to service. Whether in education or child welfare, his dedication to implementing policies, promoting positive change, and sustaining organisations is unwavering. His motto, developed by the society, “Your care strengthens our care in child and family welfare,” encapsulates his approach to leadership and service, driven by passion, persistence, and a belief in the power of collective effort. • Virosh Singh | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Virosh Singh CEO and founder of Construction for Africa Virosh Singh, the dynamic CEO and founder of Construction for Africa, is a self-made entrepreneur who embodies the grit, vision, and heart of true leadership. He founded the company in 2011 as a sole proprietor, and in 2012 he turned it into a Pty Ltd. Since the business has grown into a team of over 80 employees. The company operates in two distinct yet complementary divisions. “We have a contracts department that focuses on civil and general building works; we can build from the ground up and construct roads,” Virosh explains. “And then there’s our minor works division, which is where the business really started. It’s close to my heart. We handle day-to-day maintenance jobs, often for insurance companies, malls, and other commercial environments. That includes all the relevant trades within our industry, and we’ve built a team of inhouse tradesmen to manage it all.” What sets Virosh’s story apart is not just the scale of his success, but how it was built from absolute zero. “I didn’t have much of an educational background,” he says honestly. “I studied electronics at Phoenix Technical School but never used it. My first job was delivering newspapers. Then I worked in a printing factory and eventually joined a shopfitting company, where I grew professionally. When that company closed down, I had nothing. No job. No income. That was the turning point.” Virosh faced repeated rejection in the job market. “People would say I had no qualifications. Others said I had no experience. I was stuck. I told myself enough is enough. I’m going to change my own destiny.” LEADING WITH PURPOSE Virosh’s entrepreneurial philosophy is underpinned by a deep sense of responsibility, not just to clients or shareholders, but to his team. “My purpose is simple,” he says. “It’s about creating clarity and structure in the company, building flow and efficiency, but most importantly empowering the people within the business.” He takes great pride in creating opportunities for others, especially those who, like himself, may have lacked formal education. “Many of our team members don’t have qualifications. That reminds me of my own journey. I see the potential in people. I mentor them, groom them, and in turn, I learn from them too. It’s reciprocal. When I see them running a department or managing a project on their own, it’s an indescribable feeling.” The culture at Construction for Africa is rooted in respect, collaboration and mutual support. “We’re not a traditional top-down business. We solve problems together, we innovate together. It’s a team. That’s how we’ve built something sustainable.” Asked about his proudest accomplishment, Virosh doesn’t mention awards or profits. Instead, he says: “It’s the journey itself from starting in a threesquare-metre basement with no staff, no car, no cash, to having a structured business with systems, clients, and people who believe in the vision. That’s what I’m most proud of.” OVERCOMING STRUGGLES Virosh’s challenges were immense. “Starting this business was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he says. “No one wanted to help. No banks, no suppliers, no clients. I had nothing. I was bankrupt.” So, he built his business on trust. “I convinced suppliers to give me 30-day credit terms. I told them we were a growing company with upcoming contracts. Then I found tradespeople willing to work with deferred payments. I project managed everything. When we got paid, I made sure everyone got paid. That’s how I built credibility.” Virosh lived in near-poverty for four years, sacrificing personal comfort to build a stable cash flow and company foundation. “People don’t realise how lonely and tough it can be at the start. But I knew that if I could make it through those early years, I’d build something meaningful.” THE MAN BEHIND THE MISSION Virosh’s drive is personal. “I’ve always been passionate about cars,” he confesses with a smile. “Every time I change a car, it marks a new chapter in my journey. It’s not about materialism; it’s about achieving goals I set for myself. Watching videos of my dream car kept me motivated during tough times.” His advice to fellow entrepreneurs is both practical and profound. “Separate your personal and business finances. Draw a salary like your staff. Keep overheads low. Build cash flow. And most importantly value relationships over money. Relationships will carry your business further than any deal ever could.” On leadership, he says: “Be honest. Be transparent. Talk to your team, even when things go wrong. Support them, invest in their growth, and always say thank you. Without them, there is no business.” Looking ahead, Virosh has big dreams for his company. He says, “Over the next five years, we’re aiming to go fully digital, integrating AI and robotics into our processes and reshaping how construction is done. We want to lead that shift, not just in South Africa, but across the continent.” The company is already laying the groundwork for this evolution. “We’ve begun investing in advanced technology, including robotics for tasks like painting,” Virosh explains. “Our goal is to reduce manual labour and instead train our team to operate and manage these new systems. It’s about upskilling, not replacing.” One of the most exciting innovations is an AIgenerated room that will allow clients to visualise their buildings before a single brick is laid. “We’re rethinking every part of the process,” he says. “And just as importantly, we’re committed to bringing our people along on this journey; empowering them to grow from labourers into skilled technicians, operators, and future leaders.” And his life motto? “Never stop dreaming. Dream as big as you want; no matter how impossible it may seem. Everything starts with a vision. And if you can dream it, you can achieve it.” Virosh has built not just a business but a legacy that lifts others, innovates with purpose, and proves that no dream is too bold. Previous Next
