  • Capitol Caterers, Founded in July 1992, Capitol Caterers is now one of the leading industrial catering companies in South AfricaFounded in July 1992, Capitol Caterers is now one of the leading industrial catering companies in South Africa. ‘Welcome to the Family’ is the company’s motto; a truism endorsed by staff and clients alike. Capitol Caterers services more than 100 customised catering contracts in the education, healthcare, commercial and retirement sectors within South Africa and Eswatini. The company specialises in providing high quality, nutritious and well-balanced meals to meet divergent dietary requirements, tastes and group sizes. CEO Merrill King heads up the operation, supported by joint managing directors, Russell Nzimande and Laura Morton. All bring a unique skill set to the company; King and Morton as award winning executive chefs, and Nzimande as an industry specialist in operations and contract catering. The Capitol Workers Trust Capitol Caterers currently employs in excess of 1400 personnel. Much of the company’s success can be attributed to a stable workforce evidenced by the large number of staff who have been with the company for over fifteen years. These trends stem from a strong empowerment ethic and a business philosophy deeply rooted in staff wellness. Founder, Giles King, with a vision of empowering loyal staff for their long service, instituted a significant change in 2002 by transferring 21% of the company’s ownership to the Capitol Workers Trust. This percentage has now ballooned to 49% and beneficiaries (after five years of service) all receive a proportionate imbursement from regular dividend declarations. Supply Chain A dedicated department manages all procurement for the group. Capitol Caterers supply chain agreements ensure best price practice, quality compliance, field to fork traceability and adherence to the company’s sustainability plan. A strength is in the company’s flexibility to source products from smaller and entrepreneurial suppliers to service the specific needs of their contracts. Quality Management Systems All contracts adhere to QMS (Quality Management Systems) together with a customised in-house quality control system, CHESS (Capitol Health, Environment & Safety Standards). Operations are governed by the Occupational Health & Safety Act, ISO 9001 and HACCP standards. A dedicated OHS officer conducts regular internal audits and ensures training on food safety, hygiene and industrial kitchen standards. Dietetics The Dietetics Department offers nutritional support and contributes to the wellness needs of the company’s clients. Their functions include menu analysis, menu design, education on special diets and allergy considerations. The dieticians also prepare educational material and regularly conduct talks on the importance of healthy nutrition and balanced lifestyle practices. Midlands Hospitality Academy Capitol Caterers believes in upskilling their staff and to continuously develop their expertise. One of the tools to enable this goal has been the establishment of the Midlands Hospitality Academy (MHA), which is accredited by QCTO and CATHSSETA. Learnership opportunities are offered to both employed and unemployed external applicants, which are conducted in-house or through on-line training programmes. The academy has partnered with various training providers who educate the students in the latest trends in the hospitality environment. Capitol Caterers support the development and employment of disabled individuals. Four employees are currently participating in a registered learnership with ICAN (PMI Group). Additionally, a partnership with the Department of Social Development and Mental Health has, over the past year, enabled a further four people living with disabilities to be integrated into the workforce. Environment Capitol Caterers is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and imposes their environmental policy and strict recycling regimes at all client sites. Endorsing the company’s job creation philosophy, it has various contracts with entrepreneurial entities for the removal of waste to approved recycling facilities. INDUSTRY SECTORS Education: As a market leader in the education sector, the company strives to create a home away from home experience by providing nutritious, balanced, and tasty food. Providing a creative flair with functions, innovative meal plans and on-going student education on the nutritional value of the food served provides a comforting assurance to both parents and clients. Healthcare: The company holds a solid footprint in the public and private healthcare sector. Capitol Caterers understands that nutrition is a vital part of patient care and their rehabilitation. Commercial: Cost effective catering solutions for canteens are provided within the corporate and industrial sectors. The emphasis is on employee wellness and in providing healthy and hearty meals served within the defined time frames and operating requirements of each organisation. Retirement: The residents at retirement facilities look forward to the serving of balanced meals, personalised dietary considerations, fantastic functions, and excellent service from compassionate staff. ADDED VALUE SERVICE OFFERINGS Private Event Catering: Capitol Cuisine provides niche catering for corporate functions, sporting events, weddings, and high-end private occasions. Full Facilities Management: Included in the Capitol Caterers umbrella is a cleaning and laundry services division, a welcome service offering to its diverse client base.MERRILL KING, joint MD of Capitol Caterers, has had a 36-year career in the food industry. King, when having to decide on a career path, followed in her brother's footsteps who was working in the hospitality industry, and was lured by the 'romance' of working in the kitchen. She qualified as a chef through the trainee programme at the Royal Hotel in Durban. This culinary background has served her well, providing King with a thorough knowledge of food preparation and service. She has served as Group Executive Chef for a period of ten years at Capitol Caterers. However, together with joint MD Russell Nzimande, King now focuses on the business side of managing Capitol Caterers' daily operations. Headquartered in Pietermaritzburg, Capitol Caterers was founded in 1993 by her husband Giles who in the current role as chairman, still plays an active role in the business. The company is currently entering its 26th year of service and caters for clients in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng as well as in Eswatini. King says that much of her time is spent travelling to the regional offices to ensure that these operations are well supported. In addition, she values the relationships that she has developed with her staff and she strives to understand their needs and ensure that they are happy. "We favour a collaborative style of leadership and obtain input from all divisions when decisions are to be made. Within the catering environment, all of our staff play important roles. While wages may motivate some staff members, supporting our staff so that they are happy means that all our clients are happy too," commented King. Capitol Caterers has over 100 clients in different sectors. These range from the education and health sectors, to the commercial and the retirement sectors. "The catering business is hard work. In order to meet these varied sector needs, a standardised approach or menu is not possible. We have to ensure that our menus are within our clients' vastly different needs and budgets." In addition, Capitol Caterers not only keeps up with food trends but ensures that all the food that is prepared in their kitchens is nutritious and fulfils a wide range of dietary needs while being beautifully presented. "We pride ourselves in continually striving for excellence and in ensuring that our food is interesting, local and relevant, but most importantly, being steadfastly mindful of our footprint on the environment by adhering to strict QMS and ISO practices."In order to ensure that the staff are skilled, Capitol Caterers has registered Midlands Hospitality Academy (MHA), which is accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and CATHSSETA. Staff empowerment has been promoted through the company's Workers Trust. In an empowerment deal initiated in 2003, the beneficiaries have grown to 570 and now boast a 49% share in Capitol Caterers. King commented that in addition to empowering staff, the company needed to continually make its presence known in the marketplace through active marketing campaigns. In order to obtain some life balance, King enjoys spending time in the gym, paddling or running to stay fit and 'to ensure a flow of endorphins'. She is a competitive canoeist who has won several age-category gold medals in the Dusi and Fish River Marathons as well as a silver medal with partner, Sonja Bohnsack, at the World Marathon Canoeing Championships in Pietermaritzburg in 2017. She hopes to complete her 16th Dusi in 2020. King has also competed in running events including two Comrades Marathons and five Two Oceans ultra-marathons. King was the first woman to hold the position of president of Canoeing South Africa, which she occupied from 2008-2010. She is a long-serving board member of the South African Confederation of Sport and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). Whenever possible, King enjoys relaxing with her husband, their three children and grandson. MERRILL KING, joint MD of Capitol Caterers, has had a 36-year career in the food industry. In addition, Capitol Caterers not only keeps up with food trends but ensures that all the food that is prepared in their kitchens is nutritious and fulfils a wide range of dietary needs while being beautifully presented. • Seshni Moodley | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Seshni Moodley Founder and Managing Director of Seshni Moodley Attorneys Incorporated Seshni Moodley is a legal visionary whose career is driven by purpose, resilience and an unwavering belief in empowerment. As the founder and managing director of Seshni Moodley Attorneys Incorporated, a women owned and women led legal practice established in 2024, she brings a powerful blend of strategic foresight, legal expertise and a deep commitment to social justice. “I oversee the strategic, operational and legal direction of the firm,” she explains. “I am building an institution that reflects strength, empathy and empowerment, a legacy firm that inspires the next generation of female attorneys to lead fearlessly.” LEADERSHIP AND PURPOSE Seshni’s educational path began at the University of the Free State, where she obtained her Bachelor of Laws (LLB), followed by a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human Rights Law at UNISA. Her academic journey did not stop there. She continues to pursue excellence through her PhD, focusing on the effectiveness of national human rights institutions in protecting vulnerable groups. Her motivation is clear. “My education has always been more than an academic pursuit. It has been a mission to merge law, justice and human rights into tangible change.” Entrepreneurial ambition emerged early in her career. In 2017, while still at university, she established Seshni Consulting (Pty) Ltd. Reflecting on this experience she says, “This was my first taste of the entrepreneurial world. It taught me various skills that I apply to my law firm today.” With the support of her parents, she embraced entrepreneurship with courage and curiosity. Her consulting venture became the foundation for something far greater. In 2024, she founded Seshni Moodley Attorneys Incorporated, fulfilling a purpose deeply rooted in her desire for impact. “My why is rooted in empowerment, access and legacy. I founded this firm not only to provide excellent legal services, but to shatter the glass ceiling that still limits women in leadership within the profession.” She is determined to build something that extends beyond her name. “My purpose is to ensure that when my name is one day no longer on the door, the firm stands as a symbol of integrity, empowerment and excellence, a true legacy to pass on.” RESILIENCE AND MENTORSHIP Establishing a thriving legal practice as a young woman in a traditionally male dominated field is a significant achievement. “The proudest accomplishment of my career has been building Seshni Moodley Attorneys Incorporated from the ground up, with vision, courage and conviction.” She acknowledges the obstacles she has faced along the way. “My biggest challenge was navigating the early years of my career in a system not built for young women to lead. Opportunities were limited, and representation was scarce.” Rather than wait for permission, she created her own path. “I overcame these barriers by creating my own opportunities, studying relentlessly, pursuing international research positions in New York and Washington DC, and ultimately opening my own firm. Every setback became a stepping stone toward the empire I am building, one defined by persistence, not permission.” One piece of advice transformed her leadership style and direction. “You do not have to wait to be invited to the table, build your own.” She adds, “It taught me that power is not given, it is created through vision and resilience.” This mindset shapes how she leads, grows and mentors others. Her leadership philosophy is shaped around empathy and excellence. “I keep my team motivated through transparency, recognition and shared purpose. Every person in my firm understands that they are part of something greater than a job. They are part of a movement to redefine what a woman led firm can achieve.” When challenges arise, she believes in resolution through empowerment. “When conflict emerges, I address it through mentorship and open dialogue, always anchoring the conversation in growth and respect.” She strongly believes in leading with both intellect and heart. “I am inspired by women who create spaces instead of competing for them.” Her own journey also fuels her inspiration. “From being a young Indian woman navigating law school, to representing clients in high stakes litigation, to now leading an independent law firm, my journey continues to inspire me.” She remains motivated by the broader reality of women in professional spaces. “I am inspired by the countless women who still face barriers in law, business and leadership. Their struggle fuels my determination to make the climb easier for those who come after me.” FUTURE VISION Looking ahead, Seshni has an ambitious and future focused vision. “My vision is for KwaZulu-Natal to be a hub of legal and business innovation, led by ethical, inclusive and technology driven enterprises. I see a future where women owned firms collaborate rather than compete, where mentorship replaces gatekeeping.” “I want to see more women in boardrooms, at negotiation tables and leading high impact businesses that uplift their communities.” For her own firm, expansion is next. “The vision is expansion, building an enduring legal empire with branches across South Africa and partnerships globally.” Her life motto captures her purpose and ambition. “Break barriers. Build empires. Leave legacies.” It is a guiding principle that shapes every decision she makes. “It is a reminder that success means more than achievement. It means impact. Every court appearance, every case and every mentorship opportunity is a step toward building not just a firm, but a legacy of empowerment that will endure long after me.” Seshni Moodley stands as an inspiring and purpose led leader whose journey reflects determination, intellectual strength and transformative leadership. From creating her first business as a student to establishing a thriving legal firm, she continues to challenge convention, uplift others and pave the way for future generations. Her vision extends far beyond her own success. It is rooted in empowerment, access and enduring legacy. Previous Next

  • Susan Abro | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Susan Abro Sole proprietor of Susan Abro Attorney Susan Abro is the sole proprietor of Susan Abro Attorney, a specialist family law practice based in KwaZulu-Natal. With a legal career spanning more than three decades, her work has been grounded in a commitment to people, justice, and community. Her practice focuses on family law, a field she describes as dealing with life “from cradle to grave”. Susan Abro Attorney handles a broad spectrum of family law matters. These include disputes relating to children, divorce, financial consequences of separation, domestic violence protection orders, maintenance court proceedings, and complex international matters such as cross-border child abduction under the Hague Conventions. As Susan explains, “Family law is about the most intimate aspects of people’s lives. You are dealing with their children, their finances, their safety, and their dignity. You have to take all of that seriously.” At the heart of Susan’s work lies a clear purpose: to help people, particularly those navigating crisis and vulnerability. She says, “I’ve been involved with genderbased violence and the promotion of women since the very beginning of my career.” While her practice does not exclusively represent women, she has become known for her ability to support women facing severe emotional, financial, or physical hardship. “By the time clients leave me,” she reflects, “they are strong enough to continue on their own. Seeing that transformation is what gives me the greatest satisfaction.” STRONG WORK ETHIC Susan grew up in Melmoth, a small town in Zululand, where the absence of a local high school meant she had to attend boarding school. She was educated at St Anne’s Diocesan College, where lifelong friendships were formed. She went on to study at the then University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Natal’s Durban campus. Alongside her formal legal education, she pursued additional qualifications in business management through Damelin and undertook numerous specialist courses in family law, mediation, and arbitration. Her strong work ethic emerged early. Susan’s first job came at the age of 12, when she worked as a cashier in a Melmoth supermarket during school holidays. This early experience left a lasting impression. “You learn very quickly how to deal with people,” she recalls, “and that skill stays with you for life.” Susan’s professional journey was marked by both challenges and opportunities. She completed her articles at L.J. Paola Wright and Wilkinson during a period of transition, when the firm was taken over and women were no longer welcomed by the new management. Undeterred, she accepted an offer from Woodhead, Bigby and Irving, where she spent five formative years. “I’ve always believed you don’t burn bridges,” she says. “Those relationships matter, especially when you go out on your own.” MUTUAL RESPECT In 1995, Susan made the decision to enter private practice in association with Betsy Rowe of Sylvia Oversby and Partners, a firm they later purchased. The transition from being a partner in a large Durban firm to starting afresh was daunting. “I literally had nothing,” she admits. “But in those days, you just did it.” She credits her success to strong mentorship, loyal clients, and a professional network built on mutual respect. Many of her clients have remained with her throughout her career, evolving into trusted friends. Among Susan’s achievements, one stands out as particularly meaningful: her service as an acting judge of the High Court and later as a judge of the Electoral Court. She served two terms on the Electoral Court alongside the late Supreme Court of Appeal Judge President K.K. Mthiyane. “That was incredibly exciting,” she says. “When I first knew K.K., he was an advocate I briefed. We became very close over the years; even went to each other’s birthday parties.” Susan attributes much of her professional composure to a piece of advice she received early in her career. “My principal once told me that if you receive a letter that makes you angry, put it in a drawer,” she recalls. “If you take it out a day later and it still makes you angry, put it back. Never respond in anger. You need a clear head and collegiality – a concept many youngsters today don’t understand,” she says. “But without that, the system doesn’t work.” HUMAN CONNECTION One of the significant personal challenges Susan has faced is the progressive loss of her vision. However, she has adapted with determination and pragmatism. “Technology has made a huge difference. My phone talks to me, my computer talks to me, and I have incredible staff who support me.” She acknowledges that facing this challenge later in life, once her practice was established, made adaptation more manageable. Susan leads a small, close-knit team and places emphasis on wellbeing and human connection. “We do things together that aren’t work-related. We exercise in the boardroom, we try to eat healthily, and we spend time together socially.” She believes the nature of family law itself is motivating. “You see what people go through,” she explains. “It reminds you why the work matters.” Inspiration for Susan comes primarily from people. She speaks warmly of South Africans and their resilience, kindness, and sense of community. She draws inspiration from strong women who remain active and committed well into later life. These include 86 year old Mathabo Kunene who carries on the legacy of her husband, the late poet laureate, Mazisi Kunene, and does incredible work for the community. In addition, her own mother, also aged of 86 who has just retired is a role model. “They show you how strong you can be,” she says. “They are always giving back.” Looking ahead, Susan is optimistic about KwaZulu- Natal. “I really hope we can move forward doing business properly,” she says, “with honesty and integrity, and by helping one another. KZN is the best province in this country.” Susan firm’s logo reads, “We have a heart for family law,” a sentiment that reflects her life’s work. “When I’m gone. I want people to say that I lived a good life, that I looked after my community, and that I was honest.” For Susan Abro, leadership is service, integrity, and leaving people stronger than when she found them.” Previous Next

  • Tracey McLennan | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Tracey McLennan founder and CEO of Bconsult Tracey McLennan is the founder and CEO of Bconsult, Rightside Media and LookupSA. These entities form a purpose driven business ecosystem that sits at the intersection of skills development, digital learning and social upliftment. Tracey has built organisations that do more than deliver services. They create opportunity, unlock potential and build sustainable pathways for people and businesses alike. Her leadership journey has been shaped by a deep understanding of people, an instinct for growth and a firm belief that economic mobility begins with access to skills and support. Today, her work continues to influence how organisations approach transformation, learning and impact in South Africa. FINDING HER CALLING Although Tracey’s career began in the banking sector, she is quick to point out that it was not where she found her calling. Her first role was in the bonds department of a bank, an experience that offered structure, discipline and a strong grounding in customer service, while also delivering an important personal insight. “It was an admin heavy role,” says Tracey. “If it taught me anything, it was that I am definitely not an admin person and in hindsight, that lesson was invaluable. Sometimes it is just as important to discover what you do not want as it is to discover what you do want.” Tracey’s professional direction became clearer when she moved into sales. Stepping into the role of sales co-ordinator for an international television brand proved to be a turning point.“That role was my introduction to the world of sales, marketing and customer experience and from that moment, I never looked back,” she explains. “It ignited a passion for understanding people, solving problems creatively and driving results, which has shaped every step of my entrepreneurial journey since.” This early exposure to the power of connection and communication laid the foundation for her future businesses and leadership style. BUILDING WITH PURPOSE Today, the three interconnected organisations Traceyhas founded, each play a distinct role in a broader vision for social and economic upliftment. Bconsult is an accredited training provider, specialists in learning and development and long standing skills development consultancy that supports organisations in building compliant, capable and future ready workforces. Rightside Media is a digital learning and explainer video agency that simplifies complex information and makes learning accessible and engaging. LookupSA is a nonprofit organisation focused on developing unemployed youth into future fit talent. Together, the three businesses form what Tracey describes as an ecosystem rather than a collection of separate entities. “My purpose is to create opportunity, unlock potential and build pathways that change lives,” she says. “Across all three organisations, my mission is to uplift people, empower organisations and stimulate economic mobility.” This integrated approach has allowed her to align commercial success with meaningful impact. For Tracey, that alignment is non-negotiable.Building this ecosystem stands as her proudest accomplishment. “Creating three businesses that generate employment, develop skills and uplift communities is what I am most proud of,” she says. “It proves that business can be both sustainable and socially transformative.” The journey, however, has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant was navigating rapid growth while maintaining quality and consistency across all operations. “Growth is exciting, but it can also expose weaknesses very quickly,” she reflects. “I overcame it by building stronger systems, clearly defining roles and creating accountability structures that professionalised the organisation.”This focus on structure and clarity has since become a hallmark of her leadership. LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY Tracey leads with intention, clarity and an unwavering belief in people. The best advice she has received continues to shape how she approaches pressure and decision making.“I don’t do overwhelm,” she says. “That phrase has reprogrammed the way I lead by choosing clarity and solutions over chaos.” Within her organisations, she prioritises clear expectations, open communication and a strong sense of ownership. Motivation, she believes, comes from understanding both responsibility and purpose. “We focus on regular feedback, honest conversations and keeping the team connected to the real-world impact of our work,” she explains. “When people see that what they do changes lives, motivation becomes intrinsic.”Inspiration, for Tracey, comes from those who choose courage even when the road is uncertain. “I am inspired by people who follow their heart even when it is hard, even when others doubt them and even when the path is not clear,” she says. “They choose courage over comfort and stay true to their calling. They make it possible for the rest of us to walk further and dream bigger.” PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS Looking ahead, Tracey is optimistic about the future of business in KwaZulu-Natal, provided the right focus is maintained. Her vision for the province is ambitious but grounded in practical solutions.“I want KZN to become a skills driven, digitally empowered and economically inclusive province where unemployment is dramatically reduced through sustainable economic growth,” she says. Tracey is particularly passionate about the recovery of the hospitality and tourism sector, which was severely impacted by Covid 19 and has yet to fully rebound.“Once unemployment is meaningfully addressed, I believe the province will experience a complete turnaround,” she adds. Through all the complexity of entrepreneurship, transformation and leadership, Tracey holds onto a simple personal motto that reflects both optimism and resilience. “It will all work out in the end and if it has not worked out, it is not the end.”This sentiment captures her approach to business and life. Grounded in purpose, guided by clarity and driven by a belief in people, Tracey continues to build pathways that extend far beyond her own success. Previous Next

  • Wade Howard | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Wade Howard Wade Howard is the CEO (Owner & Senior Photographer) of Ocean Driven Media, an international media production company based in Durban, South Africa. Wade Howard is the director and senior photographer at OD Media (Pty) Ltd. His creativity and curiosity were born on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, where as a youth he enjoyed a lifestyle surrounded by friends and places like forests, sugarcane fields, local streets, and the beach. Those early years were shaped by independence and trust. “My parents were incredible as we were only expected home once it was getting dark and they even let us camp on our own down at the local beach when we were about 12 years old,” Wade says. “We lived at the beach during the holidays and even ate mussels cooked on an open fire so that we didn’t have to go home to have lunch.” That carefree start laid the foundation for his grounded approach to both life and business. His earliest jobs were no less formative. “My first job was either washing car windscreens at the local garage whilst people put in petrol or it was being a caddy at the local golf course,” he recalls with a laugh. After completing National Service, Wade explored a few local jobs before qualifying as an electrician at Sappi Saiccor. “I then worked in the United Kingdom for over two years where the love for photography started,” he explains. “Travelling around the world with my wife, I wanted to document beautiful places, so I attended a local college in the UK and learnt the basics of photography as well as learnt from a magazine called the Practical Photographer.” When Wade returned to South Africa, he knew one thing for certain, he wasn’t going to pursue being an electrician. A friend suggested he take a stall at the Essenwood Market in Durban, a decision that would change his career path. “I did that every Saturday for seven years. I interacted with people as they walked past and picked up photography work from family portraits to weddings and to corporate work. People would laugh at that way of marketing today, but probably nothing beats talking face to face with a potential client,” he explained. BUILDING A BUSINESS After a decade of working for himself, Wade joined forces with another talented photographer, Mike van Heerden, to start a company. Today, Wade works alongside his business partner, Matthew Swart. “My why is to lead and grow the company and to make sure that it remains one of the best in Durban,” he says with conviction. “My role is to make sure that we maintain our core values, which are to always deliver on our promises, never over promise just to get the job, and to always be honest nd work in a Godly way.” “There have been many proud moments throughout our journey such as mentoring young photographers and seeing them go out on their own and become very successful in their own journey,” he reflects. “I think the fact that we are still in business after 15 years is probably the proudest moment, especially in these uncertain times.”Much of Wade’s business philosophy stems from the advice and mentorship he received from his first business partner. He says, “Mike taught me that business is business and it mustn’t get mixed up with your personal life. Sometimes you must make hard decisions and to make them as a businessman and not in a personal capacity.” “He showed me when pitching in large or small meetings you have to be honest and make it clear on what you can deliver and never to agree to something for the sake of landing the contract.”No business journey is without obstacles, and for Wade, the most difficult period was Covid. “We had about 25% of our annual turnover cancelled within one week as well as then having to face the reality that all our customers were at home and that we could not do any work.” Despite the uncertainty, OD Media found ways to adapt. “We all stayed at home and did some small jobs online as well as a few videos promoting safety and centred around Covid,” he explains. “We survived by taking out a loan as well as the government aid so that we could pay our staff some form of a salary each month. We also started doing live streams that generated income and still does to this day.” Leadership, Wade believes, is as much about empathy as it is about vision. “It is difficult to keep everyone motivated all the time as a lot of anyone’s motivation is related to their personal life and especially family life,” he admits. “I try to connect with the staff and regularly discuss any issues that they may have, it is entirely up to them how much they want to share, and I think just sharing helps.” He adds, “On the work side it can be very challenging when work is scarce. The only way is to share ideas and try come up with plans to turn things around and once everyone gets on board it helps lift the morale. Sharing small victories during these times can be helpful.” FAITH, INSPIRATION For Wade, inspiration comes from faith and the natural world. “My inspiration daily comes from God and especially being out in His creation,” he says. “I still get it wrong and still have challenges but it gets better all the time.”Wade sees great promise in the province he calls home. He says, “KZN has a lot to offer and can become a major contributor to South Africa and the continent. In addition, KZN is the most resilient province, and we can accomplish anything if we can harness its amazing spirit. And if the leaders can make the right decisions, we will become unstoppable.”Wade’s philosophy remains simple yet profound. “My motto is to smile and laugh as much as possible each and every day, as nothing is better than a big smile or a good laugh for you and those around you.
