- Pat Moodley | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Pat Moodley Pat Moodley is the regional manager for the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Pat Moodley is the regional manager for the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The IDC is the largest development financing institution in South Africa and across the continent. After completing his BCom accounting degree, Pat’s professional journey started off at Standard Bank. He moved his way up the ranks and left the bank as a small medium enterprise manager to join the IDC. Over the years, Pat has completed a number of leadership training programmes, including an MBA and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) Global Leadership course. Pat’s career with the IDC spans over 24 years. One of his greatest wishes during this time is to extend the reach of the IDC within KZN. SME DEVELOPMENT One of Pat’s key objectives in his role as a regional manager is to ensure that the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector grows in KZN. The office he leads forms part of the IDC’s Small Business Finance unit, and they consider all funding applications up to twenty million rands, from start to finish. Once an application has been approved, the IDC then disburses that loan and through its partnership funding model, works together with the SME to ensure that the business continues to function optimally and hopefully expand, creating much needed jobs within the province. Commenting on his role Pat says, "I’m very passionate about SME development, especially in my home province KZN. There’s lots of potential and impact in funding businesses. I think overall, my proudest moment is funding businesses and seeing them grow organically over a period of time. When I drive past any of our clients’ premises, I am proud to say that these are businesses IDC has funded. Maybe in my old age or in my retirement, I will be able to tell my grandkids there’s the business IDC funded and from humble beginnings it has grown over the years to be a leading company in the province and the country.” AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH Following his previous work experiences, Pat has always been driven to be an effective leader. He explains that during his early career he encountered many bad leadership styles and unpleasant habits, which were patterns of behaviour that he did not want to use to lead his team. “I learnt from the poor leadership examples that I was exposed to and have improved on these. The scenario in the corporate world is changing. Back in the day, leadership was often like a dictatorship, and it’s changed. I told myself that I won’t be like those leaders. I need to be a different type of leader to ensure that I get the most out of my team and keep them motivated as well. Today, leadership is about being part of that team, it’s not a top-down approach. It’s an inclusive approach and that’s how you get buy-in from your team and create a win- win situation for everyone.” Pat is not motivated by external sources. He says, “I don’t benchmark myself against anyone. I set my own standards and I deliver on those standards, which are at a very high level. You must be an individual and make a difference based on your own motivation and your own contribution. I don’t need to aspire to be someone else.” He added that honesty, integrity and abiding by the rules are important to him. “I’m a rules person but there must be flexibility, as long as you are within the parameters that have been set. Being in the financial sector and funding in particular, compliance, honesty and integrity is the first consideration, you then jockey behind the company.” A CONVERSATION Pat commented a major challenge is that some- times his humbleness can be mistaken as a weakness. He explains, “You don’t have to be forceful as a leader in the corporate world, but because you’re not forceful in your approach, the outside world does not take you seriously, that’s what I want to change.” Pat continues that you should be able to direct and conduct business through having a conversation. Conversely, history or the likes in the corporate world want you to be in command. “We’re not in the army, you can be firm, but you don’t have to be a dictator or have a forceful nature. Sometimes those challenges do crop up from time to time because people expect you to behave in that way as a leader,” he expanded. For Pat interacting with people is a process and about building a relationship. “It’s about sitting around the table and saying this is what we can do. How do we find middle ground and see the end picture?” He commented, “I want to be me, do my work, but do it properly and correctly. Power provides a false sense of respect. I still want to be a person in my own right when I leave the IDC and not be defined by my previous title.” UNITY WITHIN COMMUNITY While the province of KwaZulu-Natal has gone through a number of strikes, unrest and flooding, Pat’s vision for the future is that everyone will come together to form a public private partnership that will see the economy grow. In order for this to occur, Pat believes that everyone needs to do away with the red tape. “To see that growth in the economy, everyone has to play their part, from local government to provincial government, to large corporates to small businesses. We have to club together with one vision if we want to see the growth in the economy and create jobs to counter unemployment and alleviate poverty. Everyone needs to come together to make sure that we can fund businesses and we can use corporate social investments to get the desired outcomes, grow the economy and contribute to the well-being of the community.” In conclusion, says Pat, “My motto in life is ‘your word must be your bond.’ If I can find that in a person or in a company, I’m all out there to support that company or person.” Previous Next

- Lubin Ozoux | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Lubin Ozoux Lubin Ozoux is the chief executive officer of Sumitomo Rubber South Africa Lubin Ozoux is the chief executive officer of Sumitomo Rubber South Africa. The company is well known for making Dunlop tyres that are supplied to 47 countries in Africa. The biggest country being South Africa, which also has a manufacturing facility in uMnambithi (Ladysmith). Originally from Reunion Island, a French island with a population of about 800 000 located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, Lubin moved to South Africa in the 90s. He commented, “My parents were a big fan of South Africa, when the change happened at the end of the apartheid area, they wanted us to be part of history.” He attended high school in Durban and then university in Pietermaritzburg. Lubin’s first official job, while studying at university, was a barman at Scottsville Racecourse. During the completion of his postgraduate studies, he lectured in the financial aspects of marketing at Varsity College. “That was a great experience, which was of real value to me. I actually got the love of learning from that job because as a lecturer you have to not only know the material, but you have to understand it, so you can pass on the meaning and answer questions,” he shares. A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION As CEO of Sumitomo Rubber Lubin has now found his purpose in leading a company that fits with his own ‘why’ which is about consciousness, doing what is right and making a positive contribution. Sumitomo Rubber is striving to create a future of joy and well- being for all, wherein the employees can support each other and contribute effectively to the company. In creating the space to create that joy, Sumitomo Rubber strives to set up the structures, culture and environment to give people the means to perform and maintain jobs in South Africa. Lubin explains further, “The company makes sure we don’t take the easiest routes, but we take the right route for the long-term success of the company, the employees, and all stakeholders. We focus on what we can control and strive to get that right.” Although Sumitomo Rubber initially drove a top- down approach to culture, they are now seeing a bottom-up trend. This trend is apparent in the great initiatives been sustainably driven by employees at all levels who are demonstrate a willingness to contribute positively in their roles. Lubin says that this culture is key to the company’s future. PURSUES OPPORTUNITIES Lubin, as well as his brothers, have received much guidance from their father who always said, ‘It doesn’t matter what you do. If you’re the best at what you do, you’re going to be very successful’. Aligned to this, Lubin constantly pursues opportunities and finds the means to engage in learning to improve his skills and knowledge. “I think that ethos really drives me personally, as well as how we drive our business. We encourage people to always be a bit better. If every day you get a bit better, and it doesn’t matter what industry or what position you’re in, you will be successful.” In addition to his father, Lubin had a great mentor, Bruno Beck, who ‘led from the front’ and was hugely influential in his life. “It’s not about what he said, it’s about what he did in terms of living a culture and its values. I’ve never experienced that anywhere else. You just can’t help then to follow that lead and to get that energy. I strive to do as much as I can by leading from the front. I think action is larger than words,” says Lubin. Over the last four- or five-years, South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal have not been short of challenges. Lubin explains that with every challenge comes an opportunity and that these drive the company, as there are many lessons to be learnt to make your business more robust and your team better. “That’s what we strive to do. Challenges are about mindset and the willingness to turn them, as quickly as possible, into opportunity, and to take the people on the journey with you.” “I often talk to the team and say when you go back home, will you be proud of what you’ve done today? Have you done the maximum you can do? Have you behaved in line with our values or your values? If we’ve done that, every day, then we are on the right track,” explained Lubin. BUILDING TRUST In terms of work, part of Sumitomo Rubber’s culture is to build and enhance trust with their employees. To enable that process all employees are encouraged to share their life journeys with each other. “Whenever I do that with any employees, you’re always amazed about the journey that people have taken, some of the hardships that people have gone through,” says Lubin. “Helping them to go a step or two further is very inspiring, and South Africa has really amazing people with much resilience.” For the future, Sumitomo believes that there are vast opportunities in their industry. The company often talks about where they are in their life cycle in relation to the maturity of a teenager. Lubin commented that they work very hard at having that teenager mindset, which is about taking advantage of as many opportunities as possible. “As a teenager, you also know you’re going to make some mistakes. But the key is how quickly can you learn to mature? In the next few years, it’s about how we use these opportunities to help us mature and help us get stronger.” Lubin’s motto is that as a leader, ‘you need to be vulnerable’. In conclusion he explained that they have three words that assist in driving Sumitomo Rubber on a daily basis which are, “intent, ambition and impact’. In terms of intent, he says we need to learn from each other and to understand each other. Ambition is about not getting stuck in easy paths but to really be ambitious and to take risks. Impact is about everyday actions. Are these making an impact and are they as a company taking a step forward? Previous Next

My path started shortly after finishing school at Michaelhouse, when I pursued sports management at Damelin and Varsity College.” After entering the world of sports marketing through a series of part-time jobs, he discovered his genuine enjoyment for managing sporting events. However, Damian’s entry into the professional world began in the corporate sector, a time he remembers vividly. “My first and only job working for someone else was at Bromor Foods which was later acquired by Cadbury’s. I served as the regional marketing coordinator for Energade and Game, along with a few other brands.” His involvement extended beyond marketing duties. “We engaged with sponsorships for sporting events, which aligned perfectly with what I wanted to pursue. We also did a lot of community involvement, and I travelled extensively, contributing to projects nationally alongside other regions,” Damian added. This formative period, which lasted four years, laid the groundwork for him to venture into his own business. A HOLISTIC APPROACH Damian’s current role at B-Active Events focuses on strategic growth and innovation. "The purpose of my position is to oversee the expansion of our events and seek out new opportunities – whether that means forming partnerships, securing sponsors, or finding the perfect venues across the country,” he said. His approach is holistic, looking at how the business can run smoother and more efficiently. “It’s a high-level view, ensuring that each part of the operation contributes to making the events better,” he noted. Reflecting on his career milestones, Damian’s pride shines through as he talks about one standout achievement: “One of my proudest moments was organising one of the first sporting events in South Africa post-Covid. The pandemic had brought mass participation events to a standstill, but we managed to host the first triathlon at Sun City – the Sun City Ultra Triathlon. It was an enormous feat, given that governments and municipalities were hesitant to allow events to proceed,” he recalled. This event, in partnership with the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), drew international attention. “Seeing athletes, who hadn’t competed for a year and a half, come to South Africa to race was really rewarding and exciting,” Damian said. The event demonstrated not only resilience but also the willingness of the international sporting community to re-engage, marking a pivotal moment for B-Active Events. When asked about the best advice he has received, Damian shared insights that emphasise his practical approach to challenges. “I wouldn’t say it’s advice I was given directly, but rather a philosophy I’ve adopted which is: Never give up,” he revealed. “In the world of sporting events, you rely on countless variables to align – from logistics to weather to participant availability. It’s never straightforward. But the key is not to stare at the problem and wonder why it’s there; it’s to find a solution and make it happen,” Damian emphasised. EFFORT AND STRATEGY Balancing work and personal life is a challenge many professionals face, and Damian is no exception. “Being a father of two – my kids are 10 and 13 – makes it tough. Sporting events always happen over the weekends, so I miss out on a lot of family time,” he said. To compensate, Damian and his team work from an office at his home, allowing him to be present during the week. However, he admits, “It’s not the same as having that dedicated time.” The industry itself comes with its own set of difficulties. “One of the major challenges we face is finding suitable venues. As our population grows and issues like water pollution become more pronounced, it’s harder to secure places for events,” he noted. He cited recent examples, such as the delays in triathlon events at the Olympics due to water pollution, to highlight the seriousness of the issue. Maintaining team spirit amidst these challenges requires effort and strategy. “I’m lucky to have a self-motivated team,” Damian stated. “To keep them motivated, I focus on keeping the atmosphere positive. There’s always going to be rough times, but I believe in having a sense of humour about it all. Life doesn’t always hand you peaches; sometimes you get lemons, and it’s about finding the best solution.” POSITIVE OUTLOOK For Damian, inspiration comes from those he serves: the athletes. “It might sound clichéd, but the athletes who participate in our events inspire me,” he said. He recounted a recent event, a Tinman Triathlon, and how parents he once raced with now bring their children to compete. “It’s so encouraging, seeing kids as young as eight getting involved and really enjoying the sport is incredible. Triathlon isn’t a school sport, so it takes extra effort to introduce them to it. Watching newcomers, both young and older athletes, training hard and seeing their dedication paying off is immensely motivating,” Damian shared. Despite recent challenges in KwaZulu-Natal, Damian is optimistic about the potential for growth. “KZN is unique with its rich natural resources – the Drakensberg, the coast, Zululand, and the battlefields. Everything is close, making it a prime location for events,” he noted. His goal for the next five years is to develop creative and exciting new events that challenge and inspire participants. “We want to think outside the box and give the people of KZN something they want to do and that will be rewarding,” he said. While not bound by a single motto, Damian holds a positive outlook as his guiding principle. “I always tell my kids, ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.’ But in a broader sense, my mantra is to stay positive,” he stated. “There’s enough negativity in the world.” He concluded, “The past is done, and it’s up to us to keep our heads up and focus on the difference we can make in the world.” Previous Next

< Back Next Johan van Deventer Johan van Deventer is the regional manager for LabourNet in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Johan van Deventer is the regional manager for LabourNet in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). He began his academic pursuits at Birchleigh Hoërskool in Kempton Park, matriculating in 1993. Johan continued his education at Technikon Pretoria, which has since been renamed Tswane University of Technology, where he earned qualifications in human resource and public personnel management. Additionally, he obtained an advanced diploma in labour law from Rand Afrikaans University, now known as the University of Johannesburg. Johan embarked on his professional career as a labour law consultant at Manpower Labour Consultants, located in Centurion. In this role, he provided consulting services to clients, focusing on labour relations issues. His capabilities led to a new role within the company as a facilitator of labour relations programmes for a subsidiary, a position he held for approximately four years. Following his tenure at Manpower Labour Consultants, Johan ventured into entrepreneurship by founding Kazini Consulting, a firm he managed for three years. His entrepreneurial journey shifted when he encountered an opportunity with LabourNet, prompting a strategic career move to join the organisation. Approximately six months after joining LabourNet, Johan relocated from Johannesburg to KZN to lead the Durban office, that was situated in Pinetown at the stage. His leadership has been integral to the office’s operations and development. In February 2024, Johan marked a significant milestone, celebrating 20 years of service with LabourNet, highlighting his commitment and substantial contributions to the company’s growth and success in the region. CHANGING THE WORLD OF WORK Johan embodies his own purpose through LabourNet’s and embraces the concept of ‘Changing the World of Work’. He aims to provide employees with compelling reasons to engage with their work beyond financial compensation. By fostering a work culture that resonates with employees’ values and aspirations, Johan believes that employees will be more satisfied and will deliver their highest quality of work out of genuine enthusiasm and alignment with the organisation’s objectives. This, in turn, enhances team synergy and effectiveness in realising the shared vision, thereby deepening client relationships, and ensuring sustained loyalty. Expanding on this concept, Johan emphasizes the strategic partnership role that LabourNet undertakes with businesses. He explains, “The goal is not merely ensuring compliance with employment laws but also equipping these enterprises with the tools to secure a competitive advantage in an ever-evolving business environment. By helping businesses excel and achieve high performance, LabourNet plays a crucial role in job creation and bolstering the overall economy.” Reflecting on his 20-year tenure, Johan views all achievements as cumulative milestones that collectively contribute to the current success of his endeavours. “Each small daily achievement is a step towards broader goals, and I prefer to celebrate the cumulative impact of these efforts rather than individual accolades,” he shares. Johan acknowledges that the most valuable advice he has received pertains to the distinction between being a manager and a leader. He emphasizes, “While managers may elicit compliance through directives, true leadership inspires voluntary commitment from teams who share the leader’s values and vision.” Furthermore, Johan highlights the significance of recognising one’s limitations and leveraging the collective strengths of a team to achieve shared goals. He underscores the importance of being open to input from team members, as their diverse perspectives often contribute to successful outcomes. Transitioning from a managerial mindset to that of a leader has been an ongoing journey for Johan, characterised by continuous learning and development. He actively seeks to enhance his leadership skills through reading books and watching videos on the subject. Johan commented on the value of drawing insights from various sources, “as no single resource can encompass all aspects of effective leadership”. He views this process as a means of accumulating a wealth knowledge and leadership principles that can be customised and applied to achieve success in business and beyond. Johan expresses gratitude for LabourNet’s embracing leadership strategies such as higher-level servant leadership and situational leadership. These frame- works align with his ethos of empowering and serving others while adapting leadership approaches to suit different employees, contexts, and challenges within the business landscape. A DIVERSE CULTURE LabourNet recognises the value of fostering a diverse corporate culture, understanding that it brings forth many perspectives crucial for addressing challenges and obstacles. Embracing the philosophy that “the answer is in the room”, LabourNet encourages inclusivity, leveraging the collective wisdom and experiences of its diverse workforce to devise innovative solutions. As a leader within the organisation, Johan prioritises transparency and open communication to effectively manage conflicts and obstacles. By fostering an environment where team members feel empowered to voice their concerns and ideas, Johan ensures that issues are addressed promptly and collaboratively. He stresses the importance of setting realistic goals and clarifying roles to overcome obstacles. Johan firmly believes in leading by example and instilling confidence in his team members. He underscores the importance of flexibility in adapting strategies to navigate unpredictable circumstances, recognising the dynamic nature of the business environment. Additionally, Johan advocates for promoting work-life balance to prevent employee burnout, understanding its role in sustaining motivation and productivity within the team. Johan finds inspiration in the success stories of South African entrepreneurs, recognising their resilience and fighting spirit as a source of motivation. In his vision for business in KZN, Johan advocates for an approach that prioritises the empowerment of emerging small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. He envisions LabourNet assisting the local economy and generating employment opportunities by optimising HR processes for SMEs and providing guidance on navigating legislative and compliance complexities. In conclusion, Johan’s motto is to “arrive with a purpose and to leave with a sense of achievement”, which applies to all aspects of his life. Previous Next

< Back Next Pria Hassan Pria Hassan is the executive chair of the Women of Africa Group Pria Hassan is the executive chair of the Women of Africa Group. Pria’s upbringing in Reservoir Hills, Durban was shaped by a family where her father, an entrepreneur, and her mother, a traditional housewife with solid values, kept her grounded. “I lived with my grandmother who believed deeply in the power of education,” she recalls. She pursued higher education at Howard College Law School before advancing to the University of Pretoria. “It was there that I was admitted as an advocate in Johannesburg,” she says. Her career, however, didn’t remain confined to law. “I ventured into finance, logistics, property, mergers, acquisitions, and so much more,” she explains, describing a journey that led her to the petroleum industry. “My first job was far removed from the industry I am in now,” she reminisces. “I drove my late uncle’s truck for a glass and aluminium company, working in areas like Verulam and Umlazi, managing logistics and making deliveries.” She explains that the experience was invaluable. “It instilled in me the values of hard work, responsibility, and resilience.” Pria added, “The best advice I ever received came from my late uncle. I was only 11 when he told me, ‘Never forget where you came from and where you are going. You are not responsible for the wind around you, only for managing your own sail’.” This wisdom has guided her through life. She says, “I’ve navigated rough waters by adjusting my (sails) expectations and being courageous, even in the face of adversity.” In addition, the exposure to the logistics chain laid a foundation for her understanding of the business world. “I learned that no job is too small or too large when it comes to building a future. Those early experiences gave me insight into how every part of the supply chain contributes to the overall economy in Africa.” SUSTAINABLE GROWTH As executive chair of Women of Africa Group, Pria’s purpose is rooted in a desire for sustainable growth. “The petroleum industry is undergoing significant changes and the supply of cleaner energy is fundamental,” she says. “My task is to steer the company through this renewable transition, ensuring we balance profitability with environmental stewardship.” She sees digitisation as a key area for growth to promote sustainable practices, reduce emissions, and to make the organisation more environmentally friendly. Pria’s goal is to drive investment in infrastructure development within the petroleum industry especially as there is a lack of bulk storage facilities in Africa owned and managed by women. She added, “In the next five years, I want to ensure that Women of Africa remains relevant and becomes a leading force across multiple industries.” SHEER DETERMINATION “The toughest challenge for me has always been breaking the glass ceiling in the oil and petroleum industry,” Pria admits. “Early in my career, I faced prejudice for being a woman in a high-stakes commodity market.” However, knowledge from the legal fraternity helped her stay formidable. She says, “I had the foresight and sheer determination to keep pushing forward, earning my seat at the table.” Even now, Pria sees challenges within the industry. “The issues persist, but I refuse to sit back and complain. I am committed to fostering change. I aim to be an influential force not just in energy, petrochemicals but in our business of logistics, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare.” These challenges have come with a cost. “As a leader, prioritising my mental wellness became crucial in my journey, Pria shares candidly. “I’ve experienced burnout traveling to different continents; sleep evaded me as I tried to juggle my various roles which eventually led to me relying on sleeping medication. My triumph inspired me to launch Women of Africa Healthcare and Wellness which aims to provide more facilities for mental health support.” Pria says that one of her proudest accomplishments is the Women of Africa Foundation. “The greatest gift we can give the next generation is our wisdom and experience,” she explains. “The foundation is my legacy. It focuses on education, providing access to urgent healthcare, and promoting mental wellness.” The foundation is also a vehicle for other initiatives close to her heart. “We are working on sports academies and an entrepreneurship programme for young people. The foundation is about community, togetherness, and accelerated empowerment.” Pria has been fortunate to have a supportive husband and loyal brother, her foot soldiers, who share her vision. Pria believes her team is one of her greatest assets, not just because they are strong, but because they consist of the right people who are even more intelligent than she is. The organisation’s social development programmes play a crucial role in motivating the team. “They see the effect of our initiatives on their own families and communities,” she notes. Pria’s vision extends to ongoing community development. “We need to focus on skills transfer, training, and collaboration,” she emphasises. Pria is committed to empowering women in traditionally male-dominated sectors. “It is important to show the younger generation the vital part they can play in our future,” she asserts. “Operating in industries like petroleum, logistics, and now healthcare, I want to pave the way for other women to succeed.” Pria holds a belief that powerful women often draw strength and inspiration from role models who have paved the way before them. “My mother will always be my source of inspiration, giving me hope even in the darkest times,” she says. “She made me realise education is not just a powerful tool for myself but if used effectively can shift the lives of so many others who need you.” She also credits Indra Nooyi for influencing her leadership style. “Indra’s empathy, pragmatism, and ability to drive change in the industry have given me the confidence to lead with purpose.” “I live by the motto, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world,’” Pria concludes. “It’s a daily reminder that change starts with personal action. It’s not easy, but it keeps me focused on solutions and positive impacts, whether in business or in my community.” Previous Next
- Yogan Naidoo | KZN Top Business
< Back Next Yogan Naidoo Yogan Naidoo is the CEO and founder of Business Solutions Africa and Black City Records Yogan Naidoo is the CEO and founder of two distinct businesses: Business Solutions Africa and Black City Records. His journey began in the small town of Isipingo, near the South Coast of Durban, before moving to Chatsworth, which he considers more formative to his upbringing. Chatsworth, according to Yogan, was a “vibrant, gregarious, and socially active” environment, despite being a working-class district. He recalls his time at Apollo High School in Chatsworth, where he was expelled for student activism along with about 30 others in his matric year. Despite this setback, Yogan and his fellow activists were able to write their matric exams at another school, earning exemptions that allowed them to continue their education. Yogan went on to study industrial psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand and subsequently won the Wits Business School New Venture Creation Award. In the early 2000s, he was awarded the prestigious Nelson Mandela Scholarship, which took him to London to complete his MBA. “I met Madiba twice, once at the Dorchester Hotel in London, and secondly at his foundation in Houghton. It was just magical,” he recalls. Reflecting on this experience, he notes, “That was a turning point in my life in terms of taking business a lot more seriously.” He now looks forward to pursuing a PhD, though balancing life, business, and studies presents its own challenges. Yogan’s first job was as a bellhop at the Malibu Hotel on Durban’s promenade during the December holiday season. He recalls this experience with a sense of irony, given his slight frame at the time. “If you think I’m thin now, I was super skinny then, and I was having to lug all this luggage all the way up to all those rooms,” he says, highlighting the physical demands of the job. A PASSION PROJECT Currently, Yogan’s two businesses are as different as they are complementary. Business Solutions Africa is a project management and consulting firm that has been operating for around 20 years. The company focuses on interrogating the business cases for both public and private sector projects. Yogan attributes his success in this field to his “analytical mindset and structured approach to business,” which has enabled him to articulate business cases effectively and deliberate the viability of various ventures. Black City Records, on the other hand, is a passion project that Yogan founded to fulfil a long-held dream of working in the music industry. “My first choice of a career would have been a musician, but you just couldn’t create a healthy income to support a family,” he explains. The Black City Records team focuses on producing world-class music for both national and international audiences. Yogan is the principal songwriter and works closely with a co- producer, and the label has already seen success with two number-one hits on East Coast Radio. “That’s an achievement I’m particularly proud of because I felt a bit vindicated in the sense that we are on the right path,” he says. All of this comes together with a phenomenally talented team of committed individuals. Despite his achievements in music, Yogan recognises that he’s “too old now to be hanging around in clubs at midnight.” Instead, the company focuses on nurturing young talent, writing and producing music, and helping artists like Gwyn, who he describes as “inspirational” due to her work ethic and vision. TRIUMPH AND DISASTER The best advice Yogan has ever received is to “take the emotion out of it.” He elaborates, “Don’t take things personally... the people that succeed are the people that remain calm.” This advice has helped him maintain a level-headed approach to business, especially in challenging situations. He references a line from Rudyard Kipling’s poem If: “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same.” For Yogan, understanding that both triumph and disaster are part of the same journey has been key to his success. One of the toughest challenges Yogan faced was when he and his wife bought a coffee shop in Montclair Mall. Initially, they believed it to be a thriving business, but soon realised they had “bought a lemon.” Yogan recalls sitting at home on the 25th of the month, with no money in the bank and numerous bills to pay. This experience taught him “the power of negotiation” and the importance of resilience and discipline. Despite the initial setbacks, they managed to run the business for seven more years before selling it and taking a well- deserved nine-month holiday. Yogan believes in reminding his teams of their purpose, especially when facing challenges. “Why are we doing this? Why are we here?” are questions he frequently asks his team. He emphasises the importance of the impact their work has on communities, particularly in creating jobs in a country with a 64% youth unemployment rate. “There’s nothing better than calling somebody and telling them, ‘You’re now employed,’” he says. BE KIND The youth he works with, particularly their dreams, aspirations, and optimism despite challenging circumstances, provide Yogan with much inspiration. “There’s a narrative about our youth that is sometimes misleading, but that’s not the case with the majority of the youth that we’ve met,” he asserts. He is also inspired by the resilience of people in his community, who “wake up every day, no matter how overwhelming those circumstances are, to get up, go look for a job or start a business.” Looking ahead, Yogan is optimistic about the future of business in KwaZulu-Natal. He is inspired by the “political maturity” he sees in the province and the renewed sense of energy in the business community. “I’m particularly inspired by the Government of Provincial Unity,” he says, noting that despite the challenges, the investment into the province is “just exponential.” Yogan’s motto is simple: “Be kind.” He explains, “You have no idea what anybody is going through in their lives and what they bring to the workplace.” For Yogan, kindness is not just a personal value but a guiding principle in his approach to business and life. ‘Life is short,’ he concluded. He is also the Head of Advisory - KwaZulu-Natal and his areas of specialism include governance, risk management, internal audit and overseeing the provision of audit, tax and advisory services in complex public and private sector environments. Moodley commented that he is excited about the future of the profession and he looks forward to leading KPMG's continued growth in KwaZulu-Natal. He added, "My career has been driven by the opportunities that my long association with KPMG has provided. The journey has not always been an easy one; at times it has been tough. I started off in 1997 as a young and inexperienced clerk, from a disadvantaged background, and I had to fight to prove myself." Moodley said that his wife, Kogie, and his mother have played very supportive roles while he was learning to find his feet in the business world. In addition, the ability to persevere and strive for success saw Moodley through these early challenges. The journey with KPMG also included many firsts. These experiences include his first local flight, his first international flight and his first international experience, which was a three month project in the United Kingdom. This international experience was later followed by a month in Saudi Arabia where he set up a new internal audit function in that region. Other highlights of his career include participating in partner development programmes in Spain, Italy and Cuba. Moodley said, "These were fantastic experiences, which have enabled me to grow into the person that I am today." Moodley has an inclusive leadership style and enjoys adding value to clients and 'bringing people to the table'. He added that he is nurturing of his team and encourages them to focus on the areas that they are good at, to provide opportunities to succeed. He endeavours to surround himself with the best people who can deliver high quality services. In addition to his strong technical and leadership skills, he says, "my major strengths are that I am very approachable and get on well with people." "KPMG in KZN is a thriving practice and we have invested in multi-disciplinary teams who can pool their skills to the benefit of our clients. We employ people who have experience and expertise in both the public and private sectors and in diverse industries such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, IT, mining, petroleum, agriculture, tourism and gaming to name a few. The team also comprises engineers, a medical doctor, a systems architect, major capital project specialists and lawyers amongst others. We differentiate ourselves from our competitors who are not able to have these skills readily available in KZN." The KPMG team works on significant projects in listed companies, state owned companies, government departments and municipalities. The fact that these projects have an impact on the economy as well as on the lives of many people through job creation gives Moodley much satisfaction. Moodley believes that South Africa requires more innovative responses in order to address the challenges that face the country. "We can't keep doing the same thing, we need to do things differently. You must be the change that you want to see in the world." He added that KPMG South Africa plays an important role in driving the innovation and digital space. "One can see the true might of the firm; that KPMG SA can play in this space is wonderful." Moodley is happily married and has a close-knit family, so much so that he struggles to spend time away. He is delighted that he is able to give his two sons the opportunities his family could not afford when he was growing up. He is passionate about football, playing twice a week, and is an avid golfer.Full Name of Company: KPMG South Africa Nature of Business: Our global network of member firms operating in 152 countries enhances the mobility of skills and knowledge we offer.
