  • Lenore Goss-Matjie

Up Home Up Lenore Goss-Matjie LENORE GOSS-MATJIE describes herself as an entrepreneur. Being a qualified image consultant and fashion stylist, she is the founder and CEO of “Styled by Le’Nore”. Lenore has diversified her business to supply medical products into Africa at large. She says, “I have diversified my product range to the extent that I also supply furniture, baking equipment and anything to do with the fashion industry – I am supplying clothes as well.” Lenore has recently been appointed as the vice chairperson of Women in Business at Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She says, “I am very humbled and honoured and want to make an impact and do the very most that I can to empower women.” Lenore is a former educator as well as a professional Latin American and ballroom dancer. While she no longer competes, Lenore is involved in adjudicating competitions and in training. Her business Styled by Le’Nore came about as a result of her having her own dancing studio. Lenore was involved in grooming, styling, and makeup for all her dancers. She was responsible for putting together stage dance productions where the styling and image of the theme had to be communicated to the audience. Speaking of her business, Lenore says, “For me, the greatest achievement in my business is styling a client from head to toe and seeing them transformed. People underestimate the value and power of looking good and feeling good, and they really don’t value styling. You could have all the fashion pieces on your body but how you put them together is important. I always say I could take a black paper bag and put it on you and make it look fabulous. But the greatest reward for me is seeing a happy confident client.” Lenore says that she has been motivated to achieve by success by her three children and her husband. She has a debilitating muscular skeletal chronic medical condition, called Fibromyalgia (which to date has no cure but can be managed). “While I was in hospital, I had one of my children ask me, ‘mom are you going to die?’. From that day forward I vowed that pain or no pain I would make an effort. Every morning I would get up, I would style my hair, I would put on makeup and on the days that I was able to wear heels, I would. I had been told by my surgeons that I was not allowed to wear heels. But I dislocate anyway so I may as well dislocate in style!” “They were the main motivating force in me getting up, picking myself up, getting the therapy that I needed to get back on my feet to get stronger. They are my everything and in everything that I do, I first and foremost want them to be proud.” JUST PERSEVERING Speaking of her current business challenges, Lenore says that these relate especially to her new venture into Africa and that the number one challenge is finance. She said, “Finance was always going to be challenge and then finding the correct partners and suppliers to collaborate with. People promise you the world but until contracts are signed, and finance exchanged …that is quite difficult now. However, I seem to be on the correct path, so I am just persevering.” Another challenge that Lenore finds is that in her experience some women don’t support each other. She commented, “We speak of women empowerment and uplifting each other – it’s good to talk the talk but you need to walk the walk. I find that my male counterparts have been there to support me. I just wish that we as women could truly support each other. Don’t be afraid if you see a woman coming up – be excited for them – pat them on the back and spread the news because something is in line for you as well and I want to thank those few women who do support myself and other women.” The advice that Lenore would give to other women following in her path is to be persistent. She added, “Be confident even when you don’t feel confident. Don’t be scared to change, don’t be scared to diversify. You think that you don’t know something until you try it and that is why life is a learning experience.” NEVER STOP LEARNING Lenore added that we never stop learning so we should take up new challenges. Even if we don’t achieve what you want to, the learning experience is what you take from the situation. Importantly, she says that people should persevere – and just keep pushing and have confidence. If it’s not meant for you, the door will not open. if it’s meant for you, the door will open – you will just have to work hard at it.” The goals that Lenore has set for herself are firstly that she wants to be happy which is critical to her. “You have to be happy in what you do, you cannot be miserable, because if there is no love there is no passion that goes with it. You can be the most successful person and be miserable.” Secondly, Lenore would love to succeed and make a name for herself in Africa at large. She added that when people hear of Styled by Le’Nore or Lenore they must know that they are getting excellent service. “They are getting quality and I would just like this business to grow and to touch people’s lives even more.” Speaking of balance Lenore says, “I am a busybody – I am always doing something, but I love sitting with my husband and the kids around the table and just swapping stores – them telling me about what they have done during the day and making jokes. I love to laugh, it’s the best medicine.” In conclusion, Lenore says that we should always strive to be a blessing to others, to uplift others, and to make others feel good about themselves. “You will be surprised as to how all that comes back to you in multitude.”

< Back Franchise Principal, Consult by Momentum Peak Sure I want to show them that no matter where they come from, there are opportunities out there. Mentorship can truly shape lives. Inanda Bezuidenhout is the franchise principal at Consult by Momentum Peak Sure, specialising in asset protection and risk management within the short-term insurance sector. They create tailored solutions that help both individuals and businesses to safeguard their assets. Additionally, the company offers referral models for third- party professionals in the insurance industry, making it easier for them to support their clients’ insurance needs. She explains, “Our model allows them to ring-fence their clients and offer short-term insurance solutions without the hassle of administrative tasks or complex products.” Reflecting on her achievements, Inanda shared, “Our partnership with Consult is only two years old in October, however, we launched our business as a Momentum agency on 27 March 2020 — the day lockdown was announced. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we managed to grow and assist clients restructure their short- term policies enabling them to maintain crucial life and investment opportunities.” In just two years, their business achieved third place nationally in Momentum’s short-term division, and Inanda was honoured with second place in the Top Female Advisory category. Part of a Solution Commenting on her journey, Inanda describes it as one of continuous learning, community support, and self- awareness. “My dreams have evolved over the years,” she says. “As a child, they were one thing, but as an adult, they have changed. I’m always busy and my dreams can change daily. Right now, my biggest dream is still in progress; I want to help others understand risk management and make informed decisions.” Her career was influenced by her upbringing and her initial experiences in law. “Growing up I wanted to pursue a career in law. I worked in the debt collection department of a local law firm but realised I preferred proactive planning and being part of a solution.” This shift led her to financial services. “I was fortunate enough to join my father’s team as a personal assistant, taking every opportunity to learn and by the age of 21, I became a financial planner myself.” Inanda soon discovered her strength in risk management and chose to specialise in short-term insurance. “I’m risk- averse,” she explains. “I prefer to mitigate risks rather than take them, which led me to asset protection and risk management.” Her career took a turn in 2013 when she joined Robsons Insurance Brokers. “My mentors there taught me resilience and integrity within the business space. They showed me that achieving professional goals while making a meaningful impact in the community is possible.” Her community involvement is an essential aspect of her life. Inanda is a member of KZN Women in Business, supporting sustainable growth and community projects, as well as the Financial Intermediary Association. “My faith keeps me grounded,” she added, “I actively participate in my Seventh-Day Adventist church, and staying connected to both my faith and community helps me maintain balance.” Inanda’s participation in the cleanup efforts following the KZN riots reinforced her belief in the power of collaboration. “Seeing everyone come together to support each other in a time of need was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we work together,” she says. This sense of community drives her to inspire the youth. “I want to show them that no matter where they come from, there are opportunities out there. Mentorship can truly shape lives, and I’m committed to guiding the next generation in business, sports, and life.” Inanda’s passion for netball is another way she engages with her community. Having played for the Natal Action Netball Mixed Team, she now coaches at a local school, inspiring young people through sport. Continuous Learning Like many business leaders, Inanda has faced challenges. “Five years ago, I decided to pursue my dream of owning my own business,” she recounts. “At the same time, I was going through a difficult divorce, which was emotionally taxing. Fortunately, I found strength in my supportive family, friends, and colleagues.” Starting a business in a competitive industry wasn’t easy, either. “Navigating the complexities of the insurance sector, especially in an ‘old boys’ club,’ when you don’t play golf forced me to focus on my strengths and what makes my company unique. Building personal connections with clients has been crucial to our success.” Inanda emphasises continuous learning. “Knowledge is power. To be the best, we need to stay informed and continuously improve. Learning comes in many forms, through reading, listening, and connecting with professionals in our field. You’re never too old or too young to grow.” She also champions empowerment within her team. “I believe in giving people opportunities, even if they don’t have formal degrees. My assistant, Samantha, was a stay-at-home mum who joined our team and is now an indispensable part of our business.” Looking ahead, Inanda draws inspiration from her grandmother and mother, who encouraged her to aim for the impossible to achieve the best possible. “I’m content with what I’ve achieved so far, and committed to giving my son the best future, but my competitive nature pushes me to aim higher,” she says. “I’m passionate about our industry and I want to help communities better understand risk management and improve service delivery in our field.” Ultimately, Inanda’s goal is to be part of a legacy of empowerment and education in the insurance industry. “I want to make a meaningful impact not just by teaching people about proper risk management, but by improving service delivery in our country,” she says. “Our industry is known for its challenges, but I believe we can make a difference, and I want to be part of that change.” For young women following in her footsteps, Inanda offers this advice: “Your journey may be rocky and winding, like the beautiful farming landscapes painted by South African artist Portchie. There will be twists and turns, but never give up on your goals. Take the time to understand who you are and where your strengths lie, as this knowledge will help you achieve your dreams. The journey may be long, but every opportunity to learn and grow is valuable.” Previous Next

She is the youngest of five sisters and after her mother died when she was 10 years old, Boni was brought up by a single dad, who she calls her 'Rockstar'. BONI MCHUNU, managing director at East Coast Radio (ECR) - KZN's No.1 Hit Music Station, is passionate about KwaZulu-Natal and its people. Boni was born and educated in Pietermaritzburg. She is the youngest of five sisters and after her mother died when she was 10 years old, Boni was brought up by a single dad, who she calls her 'Rockstar'. Boni credits her success to her father who encouraged her and her four sisters to take their education seriously. "Growing up poor in Pietermaritzburg, my father taught me that I could only improve my life through education. A statement he made had a profound impact on her as a young girl and has stuck with her ever since - 'The decisions you make about education today, must be the decisions you are happy to live with tomorrow'. This statement, she said, encouraged her to do well in school. The best marketing experience After matriculating in 1997, Boni enrolled at the University of South Africa to study marketing. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing, a diploma in business management and diploma in project management. Recently, Boni attended the international executive leadership development programme at Wits and London business schools. Her first job was with ABSA and her responsibilities related to marketing the financial services of ABSA. This was followed by working for another corporate giant, Unilever. Of her time there, she says, "I believe it was some of the best marketing experience anyone can get, as I worked in different categories from home, personal care to foods." Before joining ECR, Boni was part of the executive team at Tourism KZN. The opportunity to work for the provincial tourism authority, representing KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa, she says was one of the highlights of her professional career. Notably, she got to travel to more than 72 countries around the world and in her own words, "The experience cemented the fact that South Africa is the best country in the world and solidified my pride in being proudly South African." Influencing people's lives Now as, Boni says that she absolutely loves that East Coast Radio has so much influence in the lives of the people living in the province. "I consider this opportunity as a privilege that I will cherish for as long as I live." "ECR gives us the platform to make a difference in people's lives by influencing and connecting KZN to the world, and we bring the world to South Africa, particularly to KZN. We are proudly KZN as we are a brand that considers ourselves as a fabric of KZN that binds people together. KZN's social matters, matter to us, whether funny, sad, social, or lifestyle, are all important to us." "Growing the station's brand awareness is my career highlight. The ECR brand awareness is above 90% across all demographics in KZN. I am glad that the work I've put into making it more diverse, in terms of listenership, has paid off. This is evident in the growth of our audience, largely due to our brand's association with all things related to KZN. I look forward to continue growing the brand even further." Business is business Apart from being a successful businesswoman, Boni is also a superwoman to three kids of her own, and a wife to her loving husband. Boni says that that despite the usual everyday challenges at home, at work and in the community, the greatest challenge that she has faced has been seeing people judging her based on her gender and race. She does not let this get to her and her biggest career highlight is that she has been able to move from different industries with ease. "The experience gained from all these industries has been enormous for me, but most importantly, the experience has taught me that business is business, regardless of the different industries." As a woman in business. Boni says, 'I learnt early on that prospective employers care about whether you've got the ability, willingness and right mindset to do the job at hand." "As women, we all need to believe unconditionally that our passion can create the life we really want. We have the in-built ability to do whatever we put our minds to and need not wait for things to fall into our laps. Opportunities exist and we need to seize those opportunities and make things happen for ourselves, rather than waiting for society's approval." Remain true to yourself However, Boni says that discipline is a bridge between her goals and achieving them, "In everything I do, I believe focus, attitude and discipline has brought me this far." She adds, "I believe in simplicity, authenticity, straight talk and sustainability in everything that I do. Sustainability for me refers to putting systems in place that will build myself and companies that will compete for the future, with or without me. You must remain true to yourself, find mentors for every area of your life and don't waste time on negativity." In reflecting on her future goals Boni says, "One thing I would like to do in this lifetime, is to create a Boni Mchunu Foundation that will assist the underprivileged kids, especially from the township I grew up in, Imbali Township." Boni's motto in life and in business is that failure is merely incomplete success, to be persistent and be grateful for what you have, so good things can manifest. "I believe in positive reinforcement, not letting your past or present situation in life define your future." Previous Next

< Back Melanie Veness Next MELANIE VENESS has been the CEO of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business, now the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB),since February 2011. She is the treasurer of the KwaZulu-Natal Business Chambers Council and serves on the KZN Economic Council. Previously, Melanie was the director of Pietermaritzburg Tourism. MELANIE VENESS has been the CEO of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business, now the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB),since February 2011. She is the treasurer of the KwaZulu-Natal Business Chambers Council and serves on the KZN Economic Council. Previously, Melanie was the director of Pietermaritzburg Tourism. Melanie is exceedingly passionate about South Africa, which she describes as, "her beautiful country that she will defend to the last". She thinks this passion comes from being the daughter of a game ranger at Hluhluwe and growing up close to nature. Melanie says she is cause-driven rather than profit-driven, which is possibly due to her Irish upbringing. Unsure about what career to follow, Melanie worked for the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for a while before going to university. She loves the theatre, but her parents persuaded her not to follow acting as a career. Melanie explained that while numbers make sense to her, people fascinate her. She became the director of Pietermaritzburg Tourism after gaining experience in the finance world where she worked for ten years. Melanie was persuaded to apply for the Pietermaritzburg Chamber CEO position which, "has just been a fantastic fit". She guesses that a range of opportunities, networking, and engaging with people, contributed to her landing where she is now. As part of her quest to grow, learn and better understand, Melanie has recently graduated with B Comm in Industrial & Organisational Psychology. "Which just goes to show that you are never too old to learn!" she commented. Advocate for business Melanie is a team player with plenty of passion, vision, and energy. She is a creative, hands-on organiser, with a flair for marketing and a 'can-do' attitude. She ensures that the PMCB is an effective voice of business addressing all issues, including those that businesses find hard to raise. "My job is to advocate for business and to help develop an easier business environment." PCMB offers networking and training opportunities, and Melanie is directly involved with skills deve-lopment. The development of business is key in alleviating poverty and addressing unemployment; in her capacity as CEO she plays an important role in this area. Leave the world a better place Currently, Moeletsi Mbeki who she considers a friend and mentor serves as a source of inspiration for her. Mbeki has helped her understand South Africa's history and where the country's people came from. She admires him for his willingness to debate any issue and question things held as truths. Something Mbeki said that she remembers is, "when entering a potentially explosive situation, be 100% prepared to be convinced of the other person's point of view. If after really listening and considering you are not convinced, then prepare yourself to convince". While Melanie has been nominated for several awards, there is much she still wants to achieve. "I am driven to make a difference in my country; leave the world a better place, starting in my city. I want to see real difference on the ground; greater equality. The inequality in the country is inexcusable." One of her dreams is greater access to decent schooling and more opportunities for everyone. She wants the diversity of the country to be acknowledged and the value thereof recognised. "I'm not capable of solving all those problems, but I can make a difference and try to bring people to make contributions around issues that are as meaningful as possible." Women bring a different heart to the table As a woman, Melanie can't state if men and women experience business differently but admits that perhaps women need to work harder to get the same credit. She believes that the perspectives of men and women are different, the one not necessarily better than the other. However, their diverse perspectives are needed for a 360-degree view. "Women bring a different heart to the table," she says. Research confirms women are good at things like networking, business relationships and negotiations. The advice she would give her younger self is to question her truths; not take anything as a given. "When your truths are faulty, your behaviour is not appropriate. Form your own opinions, develop your own view of the world. Don't just talk to like-minded people, talk to divergent people to get as many different perspectives as possible." Finding space for everything and everyone For Melanie, achieving a work-life balance involves fulfilling different roles and finding space for everything and everyone. She grew into her career and was there for her children during their foundational phases. Working made her children confident, capable, and independent, making Melanie proud of the people they have become. She adds that in some spheres of one's life you belong to others as someone's mother or wife, but it is important to grow in a space that belongs to yourself, filled with meaningful things. This makes you a better person for yourself and others. Melanie is grateful for the way things worked out for her. She concludes, "It is not only important to balance your work needs with your family needs, but you must also do things that are important to you, you have one life, you may as well enjoy the journey." For her, there is no end to her journey. "There is a vision and a dream so it will hopefully always be a process of continuous improvement for me." Previous Next

  • Marlene Powell | KZN Top Business

< Back Next Marlene Powell Marlene Powell is a business coach with ActionCOACH Marlene Powell, a business coach with ActionCOACH, transitioned to coaching after spending 27 years in the corporate world, specifically in the short-term insurance industry. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in her 40s, she explained, “I reached a crossroads in my life and discovered my passion for coaching.” Eager to explore this new direction, within just three months, she became a franchisee with ActionCOACH, embarking on a new chapter in her career focused on helping others achieve business success. Marlene’s journey into the professional world was heavily influenced by her parents, who both came from the short-term insurance industry. Reflecting on her early career, she said, “When I finished school, I was told I’d either be a secretary or work as a bank teller. But I said, ‘No, that’s not what I plan to do. I want to go into the insurance industry.’” Despite her father’s advice to avoid the field, Marlene decided to follow her own path and ended up spending 27 years in the insurance industry. She added, “I loved it while I was there, gained so much experience which prepared me for where I am today.” THE FINER THINGS Marlene admitted that in the early days of her career, she didn’t have a clear sense of purpose. She explained, “It was just go to work, earn money, come home and be like a hamster in a wheel.” However, as time went on, she started to recognise the struggles of businesses around her, including those of her friends and family, who lacked the skills to make their businesses more profitable. This realisation pushed Marlene towards becoming a business coach, where she saw that she could make a significant impact because of the many skills gained when she was in corporate. Today, Marlene’s driving force is to help businesses not only succeed but also improve their owners’ quality of life. She stressed, “Your business is a vehicle to give you time and money so you can enjoy the finer things in life.” For Marlene, her proudest achievement is surviving and thriving in her business. “There’s a very small percentage that actually makes it to 10 years, and I’ve made it to 16 years,” she remarked. Notably, she started her business during a recession without realising it at the time, which in hindsight, may have been a blessing. Alongside personal recognition by ActionCOACH and top business leaders, Marlene takes the most pride in her clients’ successes. “Watching my clients grow and achieve what they want in life is an absolute honour,” she said. She also highlighted the growth mindset she fosters in her clients, helping them double their businesses with just a few mindset tweaks. “That’s what I’m proud of, seeing the success of my clients, which also motivates me and inspires me to keep growing.” Marlene has received a lot of advice over the years, but one piece stood out for her: “It’s got nothing to do with you what other people think.” In the initial stages of her career, she spent a lot of time worrying about what others thought of her. She recalled, “You’ve got no control over that. “This advice allowed her to focus on what truly mattered and has been a guiding principle throughout her journey. A SILVER LINING Like many business owners, Marlene faced significant challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, she found a silver lining. “What was good about it for me personally was it helped me move my business from face-to-face to virtual,” she explained. By embracing virtual coaching, she was able to enhance her services and use time more effectively. Most importantly, she and her clients successfully navigated the challenges together. “Every client that I had, we managed to go through this together, and every one of my clients, including myself, succeeded and survived that time.” The experience not only helped her adapt but also helped her clients catapult their businesses to new heights. For Marlene, keeping her team motivated starts with having a clear vision. “The clearer I am about my vision of where I want to take this business, the more excited my team becomes to be part of that journey,” she said. Her enthusiasm for embracing change also plays a key role. Recently, her husband remarked on her energy: “He said to me the other day, ‘I can’t believe you’re so excited, it’s like you’re back in business for the first time.’” This excitement translates to her team, who share in her vision for the future. By implementing systems and automating tasks, Marlene ensures her team remains focused and motivated. A POSITIVE IMPACT Marlene is deeply inspired by people who have a desire to grow, who want to survive, and want to thrive. Her clients, in particular, fuel her passion. “My clients encourage me to push myself out of my comfort zone sometimes,” she noted. Seeing them take ownership of their businesses, become accountable, and make a positive impact on their communities is what drives Marlene to continue doing what she does. Marlene’s focus is clear: to help businesses grow and scale. As part of ActionCOACH’s national goal, she wants to contribute to eradicating unemployment by encouraging every small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) to employ at least one more person. She explained, “If every SME out there employs one person, we can eradicate unemployment.” She believes that with the right guidance, businesses can double their workforces, as she’s already witnessed with some of her clients. “In the next five years, I strongly believe that if I could help every client I work with, we can make a real difference,” she said. Her mission is to teach business owners how to create a profitable business that not only benefits them financially but also improves their quality of life. When asked about a motto, Marlene emphasised the importance of authenticity. “Authenticity goes a long way,” she stated. For her, being true to herself and her values is key to both personal and professional success. Previous Next

  • Sheryl Smithies | KZN Top Business

< Back Sheryl Smithies Next Becoming a dentist was never her plan, but Sheryl Smithies has proved that just because your life doesn't go exactly to plan, it doesn't mean you can't make a success of it Becoming a dentist was never her plan, but Sheryl Smithies has proved that just because your life doesn't go exactly to plan, it doesn't mean you can't make a success of it. Sheryl overcame her disappointment when she didn't get into medical school, and found a new path. She grabbed her opportunities, found a mentor to guide in her early career, and once she'd earned the experience she needed, launched her own dental practice. She's grown the business to three chairs, and gained a reputation for cutting-edge technology that helps clients look and feel their best. Sheryl had always planned to study medicine and it was huge blow when she wasn't accepted into medical school. Distraught and confused about her next move, she took the advice of a family friend who suggested she submit a late application for dentistry. He pointed out that sometimes students who were accepted, decide not to take up their offer. So at the last minute, Sheryl was offered a place at the University of Pretoria and grabbed it with both hands. "Originally I planned to try for a transfer to medicine after my first year, but once I was in dentistry, I realised I loved it." Describing herself as blessed in many ways, Sheryl notes that while many parents still prioritised education for boys, hers were 100% behind her - and were both willing and able to support her through university. "Dental school is a challenge for anyone," she says, "it's not just the academics, but the other challenges like limited access to dental labs and conflicting schedules." Sheryl remembers that some of her classmates had other responsibilities too, like jobs and children, while she was lucky to be able to focus all her energies on her studies. "I take my hat off to them," she says. "Not that everything was handed to me on plate," she points out. "I was always made aware that it was up to me to work for what I wanted, but it was certainly easier for me since I didn't have to worry about holding down a job while I studied." Skills and ethics are a sound basis for success Straight out of university, she joined a dental practice where she slotted straight in. "I believe that everyone needs a mentor. It's not always easy to find your feet in the working world straight out of university and I was lucky enough to find a boss and mentor who had strong ethics as well as great dental skills. I learnt so much from him and it was a great foundation for opening my own practice." Sheryl launched the Smile Emporium, eight years ago. "This was my dream, and I can't believe it's been eight years. It has gone in a blink. They say you need 10 000 hours before you're really proficient at what you do," she laughs. "I have more than 20 000 now, so I'm confident in my skills." Sheryl has a particular interest in aesthetics. Her number one focus is cosmetic dentistry which includes teeth alignment, whitening and digital smile design, and dental rehabilitation such as crowns, bridges and implants. But while she was perfecting her dental skills, Sheryl also studied some aesthetic medicine and offers non-invasive facial aesthetic treatments too. "It's makes perfect sense," says Sheryl. "No one knows facial structure quite like a dentist, and whether it's peels, Botox, fillers, thread-lifts or micro-needling, we have a sound foundation in the science behind every treatment we offer." Sheryl is continually inspired by businesswomen around her. "I belong to a networking group and I've met some amazing women. Some of them have really had to fight a lot harder to forge their path. I've worked really hard too, but perhaps I've had it easier by comparison. Just being part of a profession is a big help in earning respect." A firm believer that women don't have to take a different approach to business, Sheryl suggests that they just do. "Women tend to lead from the heart. We want to build people up and support them, especially other women, and not just use them to reach our goals or climb the ladder." Sheryl is justifiably proud of her achievements, her practice, and the quality of their work. And she confesses she's driven and a bit of a workaholic. "I struggle to find a work-life balance, and that's something I still aspire to," she says. "But growing a business is hugely demanding." Looking to the future Pointing out that dental technology is making enormous strides, Sheryl hopes to use this to make a greater contribution in community outreach. "If you have dental problems, the government will take out problem teeth - but that's as far as the help goes. You won't get dentures." It's not easy to do dental work in the communities as there's a host of essential dental equipment that simply isn't transportable. But Sheryl is looking forward to harnessing new technology as soon as it's within reach. "With 3D scanning and 3D milling, we'll be able to measure, manufacture and fit dentures while patients wait. And we're nearly there." Looking back, Sheryl says that if she had to give herself one piece of advice it would be clear: "Don't be so easily led. Trust in yourself and your own judgment too."
