Michelle Isaac

Michelle Isaac is the owner and director of MGM HR Services, a consultancy specialising in Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment, employment equity and skills development compliance. Her journey into human resources leadership is defined not by a straight line, but by resilience, self-belief and a deep commitment to people. Michelle’s career reflects a leader who has grown through adversity and who now uses those lessons to guide her team and clients with empathy and determination. Her education did not follow a conventional path, which Michelle describes as ‘quite interesting’. “I dropped out twice, but through life’s lessons I got the motivation to go back and complete my qualification,” she explains. She studied at the Durban University of Technology, where she completed a diploma in human resources (HR), followed by a BTech in HR. Returning to her studies with renewed purpose gave her clarity about the career she wanted to build and the impact she wanted to have.

Michelle’s first professional experience came through an HR internship, which she considers more defining than any formal job title. She joined the SPAR Distribution Centre as an HR intern; an opportunity she recognises was difficult to secure. “It is very hard to come by internships. Getting workplace experience is a challenge for so many students,” she says. With the support of her family, she committed fully to the role, even though it was unpaid. Michelle explained, “I worked for free for about a year, and if they kept me longer, I would have stayed. I knew I had to get my experience in, and I was willing to do what needed to be done.

During her internship, Michelle gained exposure across multiple departments and worked closely with senior HR leadership. This hands-on experience laid a strong foundation for her career and positioned her for her next role as an HR officer. Reflecting on that time, she acknowledges her privilege and responsibility. “A lot of people in KZN do not have transport or stable homes. I was lucky, and that made all the difference.”

GROUNDED IN SERVICE

As the founder of MGM HR Services, Michelle’s purpose is grounded in service. She sees her role as one that removes complexity and stress from her clients’ compliance responsibilities. “We are here to serve our clients and assist them in maintaining their compliance with employment equity, skills development and BEE,” she explains. Her company manages the full compliance process, ensuring that requirements are met efficiently and accurately, allowing clients to focus on running their businesses. Equally important to Michelle is her responsibility to her team. She leads a group of consultants who work closely with clients on an ongoing basis, monitoring compliance and guiding them through regulatory requirements. Michelle positions herself as a support system rather than a distant director. “When I need to come in from a problem-solving point of view, that is my purpose,” she says. Her leadership style is collaborative and grounded in trust.

One of her proudest achievements is the growth of MGM HR Services itself. What began ten years ago has evolved into a stable and respected consultancy with a loyal client base and a growing team. She reflects, “Seeing how we have grown in terms of our clients and our team, and watching the team develop themselves, that has been very special.”

PERSONAL APPROACH

Michelle believes the company’s longevity lies in its reliability and personal approach. Many of her clients have been with MGM for eight to nine years, a fact she attributes to consistency and accountability. “If we make a commitment, we deliver, come hell or high water,” she says. MGM HR Services is known for being hands-on and for tailoring solutions to each client’s reality. “We do not just tell clients what the law says.

We work with them and customise solutions that make compliance achievable for them.” Michelle’s leadership philosophy is deeply influenced by the advice she has received and lived by over the years. At the heart of it is respect for people. “How you treat people is very important. I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated,” she says. This belief shapes how she leads her team and interacts with clients. Another principle she consistently reinforces is resilience through action. “When things are tough, you put your head down and get your work done,” Michelle explains. “You grow in hard times. I tell my team that all the time.” This mindset has been tested, particularly during periods of crisis.

The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal posed significant challenges for her business. Many clients were uncertain about the future, and MGM HR Services experienced a period of instability. Michelle admits, “I had to consider whether I should continue or look at other options. Something in me said, ‘stay focused, build the structure, it will grow’.” Her decision paid off as the business stabilised and improved in the years that followed

GROWTH WITH PURPOSE

Keeping her team motivated during these difficult times required presence and flexibility. Michelle prioritises regular one-on-one engagements and open communication. “I want to understand where they are and what challenges they are facing,” she explains. She offers flexibility and support so that when her team is at work, they can be fully present. “I act as a mentor. I am constantly checking in and offering support whenever I can.” Michelle draws inspiration from many sources, including reading and observing influential figures. Looking ahead, Michelle’s vision for MGM HR Services is one of growth with purpose.

She hopes to expand the business, create more jobs and continue directing skills development funding into communities. “We love what we do because it helps people access opportunities,” she explains. Her personal motto remains simple and consistent. “Treat people how you want to be treated. Be kind.
