DURBAN'S READINESS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC welcomes the opportunity to comment on the 2025 Festive Season. As organised business, we believe it is more than just the December holidays—it is an opportunity for KZN to showcase its assets, hospitality, attract local and international visitors, and boost our GDP.

As the business community of eThekwini, we are optimistic that this festive season will boost the City’s economy, especially compared to last year’s challenges with e coli outbreaks. The 2025 festive season is marked by Mayor Cyril Xaba’s confirmation that, for the first time in five years, our bulk water reservoirs are stable, with the Durban Heights, Wiggins, and Midmar Treatment Works all operating at full capacity. Furthermore, we expect over 2,000 officers to be deployed during this season, to support with extra safety and security during this festive season.

We believe that the progress made in addressing critical infrastructure issues, along with efforts to enhance business confidence and safety and security, will be beneficial in attracting more local and international tourists.  We further anticipate increased spending during this festive period leading to an increase in demand for accommodation, transportation, restaurants, catering, entertainment, and other tourism-related services.

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC believes that Durban is ready for the festive season. We urge all residents and tourists to come and enjoy the City’s festivities. From exciting sporting events such as concerts, to local markets, and the leisure of relaxing at our beaches, Durban truly has it all. Our City is alive with activity, and we strongly urge you to be part of these activities. While the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC acknowledges that challenges still exist, the outlook for the festive season appears promising and optimistic and we encourage everyone to make Durban their destination of choice this festive season!

We welcome you all, national and international tourists. To Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa’s Playground!
