Building on a 65-Year Legacy:

Henk Duys and the Evolution of Duys Engineering Group

In the dynamic world of heavy manufacturing and engineering, longevity is a testament to resilience, foresight, and a strong foundation. Recently, we had the privilege of interviewing Henk Duys, Chairperson of the Duys Engineering Group, for our KZN Top Business Industrial Leaders series. The conversation provided an incredible look into the past, present, and future of one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most pioneering industrial firms.

Since its founding in 1960 by Pieter M. Duys, a Dutch immigrant to South Africa, the company has grown into a powerhouse delivering world-class engineering, manufacturing, and design solutions. Today, the Duys Engineering Group is a crucial player across the mining, automotive, and industrial sectors throughout the African continent.

A Story of Generational Leadership

One of the most compelling takeaways from our interview with Henk was his reflection on business succession and leadership transitions. Henk famously took over the business from his own father, who retired at the age of 62. As Henk likes to recall, his father insisted he never simply "gave" him the business; rather, Henk "took it!"

Today, the company has successfully navigated its next great transition. While Henk remains deeply involved as Chairperson—enjoying a "semi-retired but not retired" lifestyle that allows him to focus on strategic governance (as well as his passions for cycling and music)—the day-to-day reins have been handed over to the next generation.

Under the operational leadership of current CEO Ian Sinclair (who carries the family torch as Henk's son-in-law), Duys Engineering is entering an exciting new chapter. This passing of the baton ensures that the core family values and over six decades of engineering excellence remain intact, while injecting fresh energy into the group's expansion and technological advancements.

Looking to the Future

While reflecting on the heritage of Duys Engineering is inspiring, the company is firmly focused on the future. With major investments in sustainable infrastructure—such as the recent R5.2 million solar power rollout at their Richards Bay plant—and an ongoing commitment to solving complex industrial challenges, the business is well-positioned for the decades ahead.

For Henk, the transition means he can take a slight step back, knowing the company is in highly capable hands. For Ian and the broader executive team, the mandate is clear: continue to push the boundaries of innovation, maintain an uncompromising standard of quality, and keep driving the regional economy forward.

We are incredibly proud to feature Henk Duys in our publication and on the KZN Top Business platform. His leadership journey is a masterclass in building an enduring business legacy.
