KZN Voters: How to Register for the 2026 Local Government Elections

South Africans will head to the polls on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, for the upcoming Local Government Elections. As election preparations gather momentum, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is encouraging all eligible voters to ensure their registration details are accurate and up to date.

For local government elections, voters must be registered in the correct voting district, making it essential to verify your address and personal information well before election day.

Who Can Register to Vote?

You are eligible to register as a voter if you:

  • Are a South African citizen

  • Are 16 years or older

  • Have a valid South African identity document

While citizens can register from the age of 16, voting is only permitted once a person reaches the age of 18.

Documents Required for Registration

To register, you will need one of the following forms of identification:

  • Green barcoded South African ID book

  • Smart ID card

  • Valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC)

Please note that no other forms of identification are accepted for voter registration purposes.

Where to Register

Online Registration

The fastest and most convenient way to register is online through the IEC’s voter registration portal:

In-Person Registration

Voters may also register:

  • At designated voting stations during voter registration weekends

  • At local IEC offices during office hours

  • During Targeted Communication and Registration (TCR) drives

  • At Civic and Democracy Education (CDE) events

When Should You Update Your Registration Details?

It is important to update your voter information if:

  • You have moved to a new address

  • Your registered address is incomplete or missing

  • You have received a new ID number

  • Ward boundaries have changed

  • Voting district boundaries have been adjusted

Keeping your information current ensures that you are registered in the correct voting district and can vote without complications on election day.
