Reflections on a Night of Strategy: Strengthening KZN as a Global Destination

Updated: 21 hours ago

By Grant Adlam

There is a specific energy that fills a room when the architects of our region’s future gather. On Monday night, the Radisson Blu Hotel Durban Umhlanga hosted a reception that was more than just a social gathering; it was a powerful display of the synergy driving KwaZulu-Natal.

The event, a collaboration between The Mercury and Vivian Reddy, served as a vital precursor to Africa’s Travel Indaba. While the evening was beautifully hosted, what stood out most was the calibre of leaders in the room. It was particularly encouraging to see the Vodacom KZN leadership out in full force, led by Imran Khan and his team, whose presence alongside the KZN Top Business team and Themba Mpofu, the Radisson’s General Manager, underscored the digital and hospitality backbone required to support a modern tourism economy.

The Voice of the Media

The discussion was expertly steered by Philani Mazibuko, the Editor of The Mercury. Stepping into the role of moderator for such a "heavy-hitters" panel is no small feat, and Philani handled the responsibility with great poise. While there may have been a few pre-event nerves, he settled in remarkably well, and his thoughtful questioning allowed the panel to move beyond surface-level talk and dive into the real mechanics of growth. It is heartening to see our local editorial leadership so deeply engaged in the province’s success.

Strategic Wisdom: Inward-Bound and Beyond

The panel discussion provided a sobering yet inspiring look at how we position KZN as a premier destination for both local and, crucially, international "inward-bound" tourism.

  • The Voice of Experience: Eric Apelgren brought the weight of 40 years in local government to the table. He reminded us that international tourists don’t just buy a ticket to a destination; they buy into the integrity of its infrastructure. His phenomenal insights into policy and municipal execution are exactly what we need to ensure KZN remains a "safe landing" for global travellers.

  • Tactical Clarity: Hamish Erskine (CEO of Dube TradePort) provided the strategic roadmap. His advice on navigating global logistics uncertainty was particularly impactful, highlighting that the path to increased international arrivals is paved with reliable airlift and trade stability.

  • The Business Perspective: Vivian Reddy offered the private sector’s view, specifically focusing on the power of narrative. He made a compelling case for why we must proactively get the "Good News" out there—capital follows confidence, and if we don’t champion our own successes, the international market won't do it for us.

  • Sanjith Hannuman: CEO of AVIB, offered unique psychological insights into business strategy and regional development, as seen in his recent contributions to the KZN tourism.

A Collective Attitude

Beyond the formal discussion, it was the "attitude" of the room that was most incredible. Seeing Minenhle Dlamini of Gagasi FM discussing reach, Carlos Correia representing the massive Westown development, and Logie Naidoo—the former Deputy Mayor and current Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife board member—focusing on our natural assets, you realise the pieces are all there.

There was a collective sense that KZN isn't just waiting for things to happen; we are making them happen. Whether it’s the digital integration being led by the Vodacom team or the urban planning at Westown, the goal is clear: to make KZN a world-class destination that competes on a global stage.

As we head into the Indaba, it’s clear that our strength lies in this collaboration. When you have the media, governance experience, and private sector investment all pulling in the same direction, the potential for our province is limitless.

Let’s keep telling that story.
