TURNING WASTE INTO OPPORTUNITY

USE-IT Waste Beneficiation (RF) NPC is a KwaZulu Natal-based community development organisation that uses waste as a catalyst for social, economic and environmental transformation. Rather than viewing waste simply as a disposal problem, the organisation sees it as a valuable resource capable of creating livelihoods, restoring dignity, supporting local enterprise and improving the environments in which vulnerable communities live, work and learn.

At the heart of USE-IT’s approach is the belief that environmental sustainability and community development are intrinsically linked. Through its innovative zero-waste township model, the organisation works alongside communities, schools, informal waste reclaimers, local entrepreneurs, municipalities and industry partners to transform waste into practical opportunities for income generation, skills development, job creation and enterprise development. At the same time, these initiatives contribute to cleaner neighbourhoods and stronger local economies.

Empowering Communities Through the Circular Economy

USE-IT’s programmes are intentionally designed to benefit those who are often excluded from the formal economy, including unemployed youth, women, informal waste pickers, township entrepreneurs, community-based organisations and households affected by illegal dumping, inadequate waste services and limited economic opportunities. By introducing practical recycling systems, buy-back centres, waste beneficiation initiatives, training programmes and enterprise support, the organisation enables communities to participate meaningfully in the growing circular economy.

Delivering Measurable Impact

Since 2024, USE-IT has demonstrated significant 220 and measurable impact across both environmental and community development objectives. More than 250 waste collectors and reclaimers have been empowered through its programmes, while 236 work opportunities have been created. In excess of R7 million has been channelled directly back into local communities through collection-linked earnings, stipends and income generated from waste recovery activities. This income has supported unemployed and under-employed households while strengthening participation in the green economy.

The environmental outcomes have been equally impressive. Approximately 393 tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfill or removed from communities, while 536 illegal dumpsites have been cleared or rehabilitated. In addition, 375 participants and reclaimers have received practical training in waste recovery, recycling, sorting, environmental awareness and green economy activities that support long-term livelihoods.

USE-IT has also established two new buy-back centres, providing essential recycling infrastructure while supporting more than 80 reclaimers. These facilities create reliable collection and aggregation points, improve market access for recyclable materials and provide ongoing opportunities for enterprise development within township communities.

Building Skills, Dignity and Resilience

Beyond the measurable statistics, USE-IT’s work strengthens community resilience. Rather than treating residents as passive beneficiaries, the organisation empowers them as entrepreneurs, workers, environmental champions and agents of change within their own neighbourhoods. Through practical skills development, improved access to markets and sustainable income opportunities, individuals are equipped to build more secure livelihoods while contributing to cleaner, healthier communities.

Education also forms a key pillar of the organisation’s work. Through school and community-based programmes, learners, educators, parents and residents are introduced to practical recycling, waste separation, resource recovery and responsible consumption. These initiatives foster environmental awareness from an early age, helping to reduce illegal dumping, improve school environments, encourage civic pride and inspire young people to view environmental stewardship as an opportunity for community leadership.

Partnerships that Drive Sustainable Development

USE-IT’s success is further strengthened through partnerships with municipalities, development agencies, private sector organisations and community stakeholders. These collaborations demonstrate how environmental innovation and community development can work together to create shared value. By combining technical waste management solutions with social and economic development, the organisation supports green jobs, local enterprise growth, improved public spaces and greater community participation.
