The tide has officially turned for Africa’s blue economy.
Today, 23 March, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba officially opened the Ocean Innovation Africa Summit at the world-renowned Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, positioning Durban as a global focal point for maritime innovation and sustainability.
Taking place from 23 to 25 March, the summit is transforming Durban into a dynamic hub where the global maritime community has converged with African ingenuity.

The event brings together leading innovators, investors, and policymakers with a shared mission of advancing sustainable ocean development while unlocking economic growth across the continent.
In his keynote address, Mayor Xaba emphasised Durban’s strategic role in shaping the future of the sector.
“We are not just looking at the horizon; we are navigating toward it,” he said.
Added the Mayor: “From regenerative action that heals our coastlines to cutting-edge maritime technology powering our ports, Durban is the heartbeat of the African blue economy.”
Under the theme “Accelerating and Scaling Out Regenerative Blue Economy Action,” the summit moves beyond dialogue to tangible solutions.
Discussions span a wide range of critical topics, including Artificial Intelligence-driven ocean mapping, sustainable aquaculture, and innovative coastal management strategies.
A key highlight of the opening day is the participation of international leaders such as Charlina Vitcheva of the European Commission, underscoring the growing global recognition of Africa’s marine potential.
Importantly, the summit also shines a spotlight on local innovation.
South African startups are presenting breakthrough solutions in areas such as plastic-neutral shipping and reef restoration, demonstrating the country’s readiness to lead in sustainable ocean practices.
As the sun sets over the Indian Ocean today, the momentum is only building.
Over the next two days, delegates are expected to forge strategic partnerships and secure critical investments aimed at protecting and harnessing Africa’s vast ocean resources.
