WHAT’S UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS GROWTH, KZN? THE APP YOUR CUSTOMERS NEVER CLOSE IS NOW YOUR BUSINESS ENGINE.

Around 96% of South Africa’s internet users are on WhatsApp. Is your business? As a regular reader you will know I usually take the strategic view, writing about key topics such as reputation and trust, metrics and measurement, the customer journey, AI and the big picture. This month we go narrow and deep, practical and tactical. Let’s get your hands on one of the most power business tools we have at our fingertips yet are not effectively, and profitably, implementing: WhatsApp.

The numbers make the case quickly. WhatsApp has more than three billion users worldwide and reaches 96% of South African internet users, that is roughly 29 million people spending almost 24 hours a month in the app. Meta’s 2026 “State of Business Messaging” study, a Kantar survey across 22 markets, found 73.3% of consumers prefer messaging a business over any other contact channel. Grant Cardone, an American businessman, real estate investor and author, best known for creating the “10X” motivational and business philosophy said it best: “It’s not the big that eat the small; it’s the fast that eat the slow.”

Messaging is where fast lives, and for a Midlands lodge, a Richards Bay logistics firm or an Umhlanga advisory practice, the cost of being slow is measurable. “WhatsApp is moving from a messaging app to an essential layer of your business operating system.”

THE THREE WHATSAPP “SYSTEMS” IN THIRTY SECONDS

1. WhatsApp personal. Where your customers live, but where your business should not. No profile, no catalogue, no separation between weekend and work.

2. WhatsApp Business, the free app. A verified profile, a catalogue of up to 500 products, quick replies and broadcast lists of up to 256 opted-in contacts. A real upgrade for a Ballito boutique or Pinetown workshop.

3. The WhatsApp Business Platform (API). The serious tool. It deserves its own section.

THE API: A DECISION TREE, NOT A CHAT – your customer or prospect journey defined.

Here is the big difference. The API is not backwards-and forwards messaging with a company account. It is a decision tree, a designed journey that, at its core, but not exclusively should take each visitor down one of two avenues. But it is so much more and can do so much more. Here’s the essentials. Avenue one: sales and lead filtering. Each response – what the customer needs, where they are, their budget, their urgency – builds a clear picture of the opportunity, while the flow simultaneously explains your offering.

By the time the lead reaches a salesperson it is warm and qualified, and the API has worked as your 24/7 sales coordinator. The hidden bonus: every opted-in conversation is building a database you own. And that database is gold. Email marketing still performs with global open rates around 20–25% and click-through rates of 2–5%, but WhatsApp messages achieve open rates near 98% and click through rates typically between 45% and 60%. Same database. Ten times the engagement, in our most trusted space. Avenue two: service and customer care. With your frequently asked questions deeply embedded in the automated or AI powered bot, around 80% of routine queries can be handled immediately. Avis’s WhatsApp assistant already resolves 70% of enquiries, cutting support costs 39% in a year.

Three benefits follow. Firstly, most queries are answered on the spot, any time, night or day. Secondly, unresolved queries are routed to the right person right away, not sent to a general inbox that is seldom opened. Finally, those FAQs feed your visibility across all the AI engines, and not just Meta AI (which is one of the biggest and most undervalued AI engines), as these AI platforms (LLMs) are being trained on the questions and solutions your business is receiving all the time and by answering these with your FAQs your business becomes more discoverable in the AI world. And the API is remarkably configurable.

Unique business solutions can be built around your exact process. FlySafair, which I am sure most of us have used, runs bookings, check-in, boarding passes, flight updates and even luggage payments through WhatsApp, with over 30,000 check-ins a month, and it is a superb customer experience. That is the standard to aim at.

BROADCASTS, CHANNELS – AND NOW, ADS

Around the API sit three more tools. Broadcasts to opted-in customers provide you with a hyper targeted audience that wants to hear from you and 98% of your messages will be opened and read. Then there are Channels, a one-to-many feed that Meta says 1.5 billion people open daily. Think of channels as your own, dedicated social media channel without the noise. Proudly KZN brands like East Coast Radio have already jumped onto this powerhouse digital channel, and WhatsApp channels are growing, rapidly. And now, paid reach: Status ads and Promoted Channels, rolled out globally from February 2026, and having just started appearing in South African Status feeds since August this year. Translation, WhatsApp is now a full funnel with ads, conversation, qualification, sales, and service, without the customer ever leaving the app.

THE KZN BOTTOM LINE

Think about your own phone. After your banking app, WhatsApp is probably your most trusted app –personal, familiar, and checked constantly. That trust is exactly why this is such a critical commercial tool: a lead machine that never sleeps, a service desk that answers in seconds, a database that compounds, and a growing gateway to AI discoverability. Treat it as another inbox and you get convenience. Wire it into your business ecosystem and you get speed, conversion and retention. The green icon is already on your customer’s mobile phone home screen. Get your business fully and profitably immersed in the WhatsApp ecosystem before your competitor does.
