1-TO-1 MARKETING. NOW! IT IS NOT TOMORROW’S IDEA, BUT TODAY’S ADVANTAGE

Last week I sat down with Grant Adlam of KZN Top Business. Our goal was to send every prospect a proposal that felt written for them. Not a logo swap. Not “Dear Sir/Madam”. In under an hour we had bespoke, targeted proposals where the message changed depending on who was reading. The CEO saw growth and competitive position. The CFO saw cost, payback and risk. The marketing head saw leads, channels and measurement. Same offer. Three different conversations.

That used to take a week. Now it takes less time than brewing your next cup of coffee.

In 1993, Don Peppers and Martha Rogers published The One to One Future. Their idea was radical. Treat every customer as a segment of one, and chase share of customer, not just share of market. They gave us the IDIC model: Identify, Differentiate, Interact, Customise. Brilliant thinking, with one flaw. Real customisation needed people, and people cost money. The vision was promised in 1993, but the economics and technology delayed it for thirty years.

WHAT CHANGED: THE COST OF PERSONAL FELL TO ALMOST ZERO

Amazon, Netflix and Spotify proved the model at scale. Spotify’s Discover Weekly alone passed 100 billion tracks streamed by mid-2025. But they had armies of engineers. KZN’s ownermanaged businesses do not.

AI has levelled that field. Predictive AI spots who is likely to buy. Generative AI writes the tailored explanation. Agentic AI takes the next step: finding the leads, hyper-personalising the outreach, preparing the quote, booking the call and updating the CRM.

Here’s the proof from our own desk. For the sales team of one of our brands, we fed a prospect list into a custom Claude skill built by our AI business, 10gen. It researched each business, found the areas of interest relevant to our offer, identified the key decision-makers and what mattered to each of them. In under an hour we had 178 customised, hyperpersonalised, deeply relevant and fully interactive proposals. Each client opens theirs, signs it, and an invoice lands in their inbox straight away.

Think about what that does to the follow-up call. Nobody opens with “So, tell me what you do.” The prospect has already seen their own business, their own challenges and their own numbers reflected back at them. The conversation starts three steps further down the road. Last month I wrote about the customer experience journey. This is that journey with the friction removed, right here, right now. Let that sink in.

PERSONALISATION AT EVERY STAGE OF THE FUNNEL

McKinsey research from 2021 found that 71% of consumers expect personalised interactions and 76% get frustrated when they don’t receive them. Yet most businesses personalise one thing: the first name in an email. Here’s where it really belongs:

  1. Awareness. Ads and content tailored by sector and location. A Richards Bay logistics firm sees portefficiency content; an Umhlanga practice sees client-retention content.

  2. Interest. A landing page and lead magnet that speak to the visitor’s industry, plus a WhatsApp follow-up that answers their actual question and uses their name, so it feels personal. With 96% of SA internet users on WhatsApp, this is where the conversation lives.

  3. Consideration. Case studies matched to the prospect’s size and sector, not your favourite three. A Ballito guesthouse sees a hospitality result; a Pinetown manufacturer sees a plant that looks like theirs.

  4. Proposal. Role-based messaging for every decisionmaker. The CEO, CFO and marketing lead each read their own reason to say yes.

  5. Close. Interactive sign-off and an instant invoice. No more “I’ll send it through on Monday.”

  6. Onboarding. A welcome sequence built on what the client told you during the sale, so nobody asks the same question twice.

  7. Retention and referral. Check-ins triggered by their results and renewal dates, and referral requests timed to their wins. When a Durban client’s volumes jump, they hear from you before they have to ask.

“Personalisation isn’t putting a name in an email. It’s changing what you say, how you say it and when you send it.”

THE GUARDRAILS: TRUST FIRST

Writing in Harvard Business Review in 1999, Peppers, Rogers and Dorf defined one-to-one as “being willing and able to change your behaviour toward an individual customer”. Fifty “personalised” WhatsApp’s is not a relationship. It’s spam with a first name.

In South Africa, POPIA Section 69 sets the rules for electronic direct marketing: consent, or the narrow existing-customer exception, always with an easy opt-out. Use data to be useful, not creepy. Peppers and Rogers called it the learning relationship: every interaction should make the next one better for the customer, not just more profitable for you. And keep people in the loop. AI prepares, a human checks, and a human builds the relationship.

WHERE TO START ON MONDAY

  1. Pick one moment. Don’t personalise everything at once. The proposal is the easiest win, because that’s where deals stall

  2. Get your data in one place. Your CRM, your website enquiries and your WhatsApp chats should tell one story about each customer.

  3. Build it once, then measure. Turn your best proposal into an AI skill, then compare win rates and turnaround times against the old way. Simple really. Actually not! But it’s a lot simpler than it was a year ago.

THE KZN BOTTOM LINE

KZN contributes around 16% of South Africa’s GDP, and much of it runs on relationships: in manufacturing, logistics, hospitality and professional services from Durban to the North Coast. The businesses that win the next five years will make every customer feel known, at every stage, at scale.

Grant Cardone put it simply: “It’s not the big that eat the small; it’s the fast that eat the slow.” In 2026, the fast are personal, and the personal are fast. One-to-one marketing isn’t tomorrow’s idea. It’s today’s advantage. The only question is whether your customers experience it from you, or from your competitor.
