AI TO ROI: FROM POSSIBILITY TO PROFITABILITY

I recently had the distinct privilege of being the keynote speaker at the incredible KZN Top Business Awards with one goal in mind. To bring hope and opportunity to all business leaders in this new AI powered world. One word defines this era for growth minded business leaders, and that is generate. AI generates – copy, images, campaigns, a hundred social posts before the kettle boils. It generates fast, it generates cheap, and it generates endlessly. But here is the trap most KZN businesses have walked straight into. Generation is not the same as growth. A full content calendar is not a full sales pipeline.

For over seventy years ROI meant Return on Investment. We are on a mission to redefine it into something more powerful, more profound – Return on Intelligence. Thinking used to be the one thing you could not buy more of, now you can rent reasoning by the hour. The whole economy has become generative, and AI is rapidly becoming our new business operating system. So, hold every AI output to the highest standard. A hundred AI-generated posts are output. More qualified enquiries are an outcome.

Additional gross profit is impact. Most businesses stop at output!! They generate more noise, more efficiently, and wonder why the bank balance never moves. The numbers back the warning. Stanford’s AI Index says 88% of organisations now use AI somewhere, yet MIT went looking for the money and found 95% of generative AI pilots produce no measurable profit at all. Gartner expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be scrapped by 2027. Microsoft ranks South Africa the number one adopter of generative AI on the continent, but only around one in five local businesses trains its people to use it. KZN drives roughly 16% of national GDP and moves about 60% of the country’s cargo through Durban and Richards Bay.

We are adopting like leaders and preparing like spectators. That is the gap, and the good news hiding inside it is that the technology isn’t broken. The strategy is. And strategy, every business leader can fix. “A hundred AI-generated posts are output. More qualified enquiries are an outcome. Additional gross profit is impact. Most businesses stop at output.”

STOP MEASURING EFFORT. START MEASURING MULTIPLES.

When the strategy is right, you stop counting activity and start counting multiples. Four of them, measured against a baseline, one marketing workflow at a time.

1. Hours reclaimed. Time handed back to your team to think, not chase admin, format reports or copy-paste leads between systems. When Microsoft rolled out Copilot, telecoms group Lumen measured its sellers saving roughly four hours each, every week – a part-time strategist hiding inside a salary you already pay.

2. Revenue grown. More pipeline, faster follow-up, better conversion. McKinsey puts the uplift from well designed AI agentic workflows at 10% to 30%, and it is worth remembering it is not the big that eat the small, it’s the fast that eat the slow.

3. Cost and errors cut. Lower cost-to-serve and a leaner stack. Gartner found only 49% of marketing tools are ever actively used. Replace the bloat, not the people. Put the money you save on unused tools into training your teams on the effective use of AI, practically and tactically.

4. Adoption embedded. Your team actually using AI, safely and daily. A tool nobody opens returns nothing. That is what 10x really means. Not ten times the tools. Ten times the knowledge and productivity. But note the discipline: baseline the workflow first, then measure. Human powered, AI accelerated.

THINK HUMAN: GO FAR, GO TOGETHER.

Now the part most owners get wrong. They ask which AI will replace people. The winners ask which people, paired with AI, become unbeatable. For the first time in history, four generations share our workplaces: Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z. The digital natives (Millennials and GenZers) master a new tool by lunchtime. The veterans bring what no machine can generate: judgment, pattern and market trend recognition, the scars and resilience of three recessions and a pandemic. AI can produce a thousand answers a minute. It takes a deeply experienced person to know which one matters.

So pair them. Put the young native who drives the tool next to the veteran who interrogates the answer. There is an African proverb I love, and it is really an accelerated business growth strategy in disguise:

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Then keep the way you work with AI simple: the first mile and the last mile. Your team owns the first mile – your reputation in the marketplace, choosing the right customer, setting the offer, asking the question worth asking. AI owns the heavy middle – the drafting, the sorting, the reconciling. Then your team returns for the last mile: the empathy, the context, the handshake and relationship that closes the deal. The machine brings scale but it cannot deliberate, decern, decide, delight.

THE KZN BOTTOM LINE.

Don’t boil the ocean. Pick the one marketing lever where you are bleeding the most time or money – slow enquiry response, weak follow-up, invisibility in AI search. Agentify that single workflow, measure the multiple against your baseline, and only then move to the next. Ninety days to get your AI immersion going.

■ Days 1 to 30: Learn and choose one or two platforms (our AI weapon of choice is Claude), and dream

■ Days 31 to 60: Plan just one workflow and build the business case

■ Days 61 to 90: Launch into one unit and prove the return.

Then replicate and scale. As Peter Drucker said long before an AI powered dashboard was ever opened in Umhlanga, “What gets measured, gets managed.” Return on Intelligence is measurable too, but only if you build it deeply, slowly and meaningfully. Deeply, into one real workflow. Slowly, because trust is built at human speed. Meaningfully, anchored to your people and your profit. Possibility is everything AI can generate.

Profitability is the customer it actually generates. Stop admiring the machine. Baseline the work, measure the multiple, and make it pay. With your people. Generate noise, and you’ll be busy. Generate customers, and you’ll still be here in years to come. And not just plodding along with incremental growth but exploding with exponential scale. From Possibility to Profitability.
