STRENGTHENING DURBAN’S MARITIME ECONOMY

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC has officially launched the Durban Shipping Chamber, a strategic industry initiative designed to strengthen Durban’s position as Africa’s premier port city and maritime gateway while driving growth, investment and collaboration across the maritime sector.

The announcement was made during a Durban Chamber Industry Working Group meeting, which brought together key stakeholders from the shipping, logistics, ports and marine services sectors to discuss the future of Durban’s maritime economy. The newly established Durban Shipping Chamber will be led by Durand Richard Naidoo and will serve as a unified platform for stakeholders across the maritime value chain. Its mandate includes promoting industry collaboration, advancing commercial opportunities, supporting policy alignment and positioning Durban as a globally competitive trade and shipping hub.

As South Africa’s primary maritime gateway, the Port of Durban handles the majority of the country’s container traffic and serves as a critical link between the national economy and international markets. While the Durban Port Forum plays an important role in resolving operational issues, there has been no dedicated private sector platform focused on business development, investment attraction and enhancing the competitiveness of the broader maritime industry.
