- Benita Ardenbaum | KZN Top Business Nexus
Benita Ardenbaum Next Previous Benita Ardenbaum is the managing director of Benita Ardenbaum Attorneys Benita Ardenbaum, the dynamic managing director of Benita Ardenbaum Attorneys, is a formidable presence in KwaZulu-Natal’s business landscape. With nearly three decades of legal expertise, she has not only shaped the field of family law but has also emerged as a powerful force in the province’s business community. Born into challenging circumstances, Benita’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a leading legal figure is a testament to her resilience and strategic foresight. Adopted at birth, her early life involved a move overseas with her family at age 12, where she faced significant challenges, including the decision to leave school and support herself at 15. Her experiences of working day and night enabled her to travel across Europe at 16, honing her communication skills and fostering a deep understanding of diverse cultures. This early exposure prepared her for the complex world of legal and business leadership. Reflecting on those formative years, Benita says, “Traveling and working so young gave me a unique perspective. It taught me to respect different view- points and to see challenges as opportunities. That perspective has shaped the way I approach the law.” After receiving life-changing advice, Benita returned to her education and later pivoted from a BCom degree to pursue law, earning both a BA and LLB. This strategic decision set the stage for her to establish one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most respected family law practices. Her firm quickly gained a reputation for handling some of the most challenging cases, from international child abductions to high-stakes divorces, underpinned by her commitment to justice and advocacy for the vulnerable. FINDING JUSTICE Benita’s personal history steered her toward family law. “There was this fiery passion within me to find justice for people and to defend the underdog. My whole purpose was to give people, especially children, a voice and enable them to have a choice,” she explained. As a female leader in the competitive world of family law, Benita’s approach is anything but conventional. She has redefined the practice by viewing law as a strategic tool for achieving justice and setting new legal precedents. This innovative mindset has propelled her firm to the forefront of the industry, setting benchmarks in both legal excellence and business acumen. Commenting on her practice, Benita elaborates, “If I can help one person in a family, it impacts the children. They then grow up in a more stable environment, creating a ripple effect that makes a difference. I think families are the backbone of society. People often think of family law as ‘soft law,’ but it is extremely complex, as you’re dealing with people’s emotions.” POWER OF THE LAW For business leaders in KwaZulu-Natal, Benita’s story offers a blueprint for success. Her ability to transform a legal practice into a thriving enterprise that not only delivers top-tier legal services but also influences broader societal change is a testament to her visionary leadership. Benita Ardenbaum Attorneys is not just a legal service provider; it is a beacon of innovation in the legal field, driven by a clear strategic vision that prioritises both client outcomes and market expansion. Under her leadership, the firm has grown from a small practice to a powerhouse in the South African legal landscape, recently expanding into Cape Town with plans for further growth in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. Her vision is clear: to continue expanding its influence and market share by leveraging the power of the law to drive business success and societal impact. A THOUGHT LEADER Beyond her immediate business achievements, Benita has emerged as a thought leader in the legal industry. Her insights on complex family law issues are highly sought after, and she has reshaped the discourse around family law by advocating for a more strategic, results driven approach to resolving disputes. Benita added that she is inspired by people’s stories. “I feel incredibly grateful when I can actually help people, and I can see the tangible results where, for example when children or people are not caught up in conflict any longer. Communicating with people, helping them to try and resolve the issues that they have, is what inspires me, because without people to help we wouldn’t have this business.” Her influence extends beyond the legal community, inspiring a new generation of business leaders and lawyers to adopt a more feminine and effective approach in their fields. A COMPELLING EXAMPLE For KwaZulu-Natal’s top business leaders, Benita’s journey serves as a compelling example of how strategic pivoting, resilience, and a clear vision can align business success with a higher purpose. Her ability to blend empathy with business acumen has earned her respect in the legal community and established her as a model of purposeful leadership in the broader business world. Benita’s story is a powerful reminder of how one female leader’s vision and determination can transform an industry, inspire a team, and create lasting impact. Her legacy is one of innovation, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, making her not just a leader in family law but a pioneering figure in KwaZulu-Natal’s business community. In conclusion, Benita encourages others to embrace a purpose beyond themselves. “At our firm, we believe in the power of connection, it’s never just about one person, but about the collective impact we can have. My team and I live by the principle that staying true to our core purpose and values is what drives us. We often remind clients of the importance of gratitude, which helps them find resilience through life’s transitions. It is about appreciating what we have and finding growth, even in the midst of adversity.” Previous Next

- Allan Hirsch | KZN Top Business Nexus
Allan Hirsch Next Previous Allan Hirsch is the founder and chairman of Hirsch’s Allan Hirsch, the founder and chairman of Hirsch’s, is a remarkable example of some- one who came from humble beginnings and overcame significant challenges to achieve success. He embodies the belief that “where you begin does not determine where you can go.” Hirsch’s, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2024, is now the largest privately-owned appliance dealer in southern Africa, encompassing a chain of mega appliance and home furnishing stores. The name ‘Hirsch’ has become synonymous with service excellence. Born in Johannesburg, Allan Hirsch moved with his family to the KwaZulu-Natal coast, where he grew up. He was one of the first pupils to attend Umhlali Primary School on the North Coast. Reflecting on his early years, Allan says, “I didn’t shine in school. After struggling through high school with very poor grades, I decided to become an apprentice appliance technician.” He began his career with Fuchsware, where he worked for five years and gained invaluable experience in refrigerator repair. After this, he joined another company, where his and the owner’s business philosophies clashed. “The owner wanted to keep increasing margins,” he recalls, “while I wanted reasonable rates and great service to keep customers happy.” FIRST STORE OPENED When his employer suggested he strike out on his own, Allan found the idea both exciting and intimidating. Recently married to Margaret, he had just bought his first property, and his first child was on the way. Despite these pressures, he eventually opened an electrical appliance repair store on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in Durban North in 1979. “We set up our first shop 44 years ago in a showroom, no bigger than a bathroom,” he explained. Looking back, he remembers feeling “absolutely flat broke” the day Hirsch’s Electrical Repairs opened, having spent his R900 savings on rent, an electricity deposit, and marketing. He recalls that buying a loaf of bread for 11 cents on his way home that night was “enormously symbolic.” He fondly remembers working “long hours when others took weekends off,” with the support of Margaret. Initially, Allan only repaired appliances, but as his reputation grew, so did his business. Eventually, he began formally dealing in appliances as well starting to sell stoves and fridges. Margaret’s innovative marketing ideas helped create a strong demand for Hirsch’s products. When microwaves hit the market, they saw potential in the new appliance and Margaret started cooking demonstrations to showcase their benefits. Their clients loved the fact that Allan and Margaret went out of the way to make their lives easier. Allan is passionate about the environment and energy efficiency. “Many years ago, I realised how important energy efficiency was in South Africa. It made me very aware of how appliances can be used effectively and how certain appliances use less water and less electricity and are quieter than others. We try to encourage the consumer to buy energy efficient products. I believe as an appliance retail store we really can influence decisions and at the same time make a difference. We believe it starts at the socket. If things that are not being used are unplugged it has an impact,” he says. HAVING A WHY Allan firmly believes that “having a why” is essential for staying passionate and being a good leader. He credits Simon Sinek’s book, Start with Why, for helping him define the purpose of Hirsch’s. “Hard work with a goal in mind is necessary,” he says. “Retail requires listening to customers and keeping them happy; my success has been about serving others. I realised my purpose in life is to serve.” Allan’s approach to leadership is straightforward. “People are human, grow them, teach them skills, and more than just selling or servicing, teach them how the business works.” Seeing staff grow, improve their circumstances and being happy with their lives inspires him. “We like to keep people part of us, but if they leave, they take their skills elsewhere and we wish them well.” He gets serious when stating, “Honesty, integrity, and loyalty are required; these principles can’t be compromised and are not negotiable. We are totally transparent about the business with our staff.” Selecting quality products and suppliers is also important for him. His view is: “Look after your suppliers and they will look after you.” Trust must be earned and Alan still tries to enhance the good reputation Hirsch’s has built over 45 years. “Winners always keep going. You need to keep your vision and keep on working hard when things go wrong.” WIDE RECOGNITION Allan has received wide recognition for his business contributions, including the Marketing Management Institute’s “Marketer of the Year Award” in 1994 and the Standard Bank KZN Business Leader of the Year Award in 2019. The honorary award is given to a person who has demonstrated, “exemplary business achievement, industry influence and is a true inspiration to others”. Allan and his wife Margaret have been married for 52 years and have two children, Richard and Luci, who now play key roles in the business. “Our highlight has been getting to work with our family every single day,” they say, and Allan is also a proud grandfather to five grandsons. Despite the demands of running a growing business, the Hirsch family remained close, enjoying regular Sunday lunches together and staying in constant contact. Both Richard, now CEO, and Luci, Brand Manager, rose through the ranks, contributing to the company’s continued success and expansion into mega appliance and home furnishing stores across KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town, and Gauteng. As the family looks to the future, they take pride in their accomplishments, founded on the values of honesty, integrity, and loyalty. Previous Next

- Youshi Naidoo
Up Home Up Youshi Naidoo YOUSHI NAIDOO says firstly, “I am a mum although both girls are now legal ‘adults’ – then a wife and homemaker. I am blessed to be surrounded by a loving, caring and supportive family, healthy parents, siblings and loads of friends who are my support structure.” Youshi heads up the largest portfolio of services at DRG, which is the PEO service. Her work responsibilities include onboarding and communications for their international PEO client base. This involves engaging with their international clients and networks as a total HR service provider. “We take pride in our responsibility in assisting SME’s and Corporates in the setup of a solid Human Resource platform, ensuring that they are always 100% compliant from our SA labour law perspectives. DRG is 27 years in operation helping organisations create engaged work environments,” commented Youshi. Her journey at DRG began a few years ago as a HR administrator. A year later from working very closely with her CEO, learning David’s work ethics and methodology, she graduated to PEO Services Manager. “David has helped me develop and fine tune my capabilities and helped me gain confidence enough to engage with high profile clients in and around the globe,” says Youshi. GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITIES Sibaya Africa, a subsidiary to DRG, manages the charity projects and community outreach activities. The focus is on aiding under-privileged children, and orphanages. DRG is passionate about giving back to communities and helping the less fortunate, even if it is a simple hot cooked meal, clothing donations, toys, books, helping renovate their humble living spaces etc. The company is first to put up a hand and volunteer services, time, and efforts. Personally, through Youshi’s local church efforts she is active in feeding schemes, clothing drives and welfare projects such as providing grocery hampers to destitute families. They have about 80 families currently that are supported on a monthly basis. This is only possible through generous donations from their committed local members. “I like to think that I am making a difference in both business and community through these efforts whilst keeping calm and focussed on outcomes,” says Youshi. PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE Yoshi has a passion for excellence. “My fellow businesswoman are all inspirations to me. I feel more than motivation when I see women rise into positions of success despite having faced personal setbacks. Listening to their success stories especially from out of impoverished backgrounds, not letting their unfortunate circumstances hold them back, despite their poverty and struggles persevered until they achieved success. Moreover, I have the utmost respect and regard when they stop to give back to uplift and upskill those in the same situation that they ascended from.” A SOLID FOUNDATION Immediately upon completing her tertiary studies, Youshi was recruited into the corporate sector. She explains, “I completed my final exams in December and started in the financial sector in January. It was very much a male dominated environment back in the days of ‘sir’ and closed-door policies.” She says that this set a solid foundation for her in terms of structures and ways of working which she is thankful for, but that she could never grow. “There was just no way around prejudices of women in the workplace, especially being Indian, I felt disregarded. One only got ahead if one found favour with your bosses. Through much perseverance and patience, I moved into various other roles in corporate. My life changed completely when I entered DRG.” “It was different to all I had known and was used to. Suddenly I had endless possibilities and recognition before me. It was thrilling and I was fortunate to have found a positive space that enabled my development and growth. I finally found my niche at DRG.” In the future Youshi’s goal is to improve herself not only for the sake of personal growth but for the growth of the company. “DRG is a fast-growing organisation. We promote services in 20 countries in Africa and have seen tremendous demand here more recently. My future goal is to ensure our service meets the demands and expectations of an internationally focussed organisation.” DON’T LET FEAR HOLD YOU BACK The asset of any business is in its people says Youshi. She added that thankfully many business leaders are recognising this so you should take every opportunity afforded you to upskill, improve and innovate wherever you can. “Push through any doubts, and challenges and find your purpose. Don’t let fear hold you back and you will be amazed at your inner strength and at what you can accomplish. Use your talents and natural abilities to forge ahead and reach your maximum potential. There is nothing more rewarding than discovering your true talents and using them to help serve the needs of others.” UNSELFISH TIME Youshi says that she is privileged to enjoy work life balance. “It took some working at, but I am finally enjoying it. I take personal time out for myself. I consider myself deeply spiritual. Come Friday sunset I tune off mentally from all secular activities and dedicate the next 24 hours to spending with my God and fellow believers. This allows me the space to relax and unwind.” She explains that this time replenishes and reenergises her for the week ahead. This is also unselfish time dedicated to the service of others. Before covid it was visiting the sick in hospitals, visiting nursing homes to spend time with the aged, bringing them a care hamper and providing some entertainment to the old and frail, most of whom are left to themselves and forgotten by their families. Further, Youshi enjoys spending time actively in nature, beach walks and socialising. She added that she enjoys old classic hymns and songs.

A qualified personal trainer, Micaela instructs groups and individuals in Pilates, ballet and yoga MICAELA FAITH MEYER is a multitalented independent businessperson and entrepreneur in several activities, mostly related to the health and fitness industry. A qualified personal trainer, Micaela instructs groups and individuals in Pilates, ballet and yoga. In addition, she is a dietician and nutritional therapist. Along with being an event planner and coordinator, Micaela does marketing on behalf of organisations and does business networking, mainly through the Upper Highway Pure Lifestyle page. An independent, self-sufficient woman Micaela is an unusually self-sufficient person, who has had to help herself to get to where she is today. She remarks, "Nobody really helped me, I mostly had to work things out for myself. I built the right connections to get where I am today by following my passion along life's unpredictable paths." She has had to recognise or create her opportunities and describes these as "blessings aligned with her purpose". She adds that enjoying what she does has also helped her along the way. Micaela's independence started at a very young age. Her father works for non-profit organisations internationally. This work takes place mostly in rural communities where he participates in community and social development initiatives and makes participatory videos. Her mother is a paramedic. Micaela says of her, "She is the hardest working woman that I know. Regardless of her age, she works 24/7. My mother is more of an inspiration to me than anyone else." Micaela adds that her parents were "very hands-off" meaning she had to grow up very quickly, be self-sufficient and become independent. Consequently, she says she has lived mainly on her own and started working when she was only fourteen years. "This has driven me to be ambitious, strive for great goals and set high standards for myself." Another person who has been an inspiration for Micaela in business and life is Rolene Strauss, a former Miss South Africa winner as well as the Miss World in 2014. Rolene inspires Micaela because she has done much to empower many women through giving back to the community and uplifting people, especially women, though her various organisations and by her general example. "I share Rolene's values about health, business, and life," commented Micaela. More than a fitness instructor Micaela started her working career by working for a non-profit organisation in the Drakensberg. "At least in part because I love being outdoors in nature, and I am an adrenaline junkie," she commented. In so doing, Micaela immediately realised that she wanted to work with people and empower them. She decided to get involved with the health and fitness industry, and studied aromatherapy, nutrition and completed several other courses. Micaela worked at Cotswold Downs where she did personal training, and instructed yoga and Pilates groups. A position at Fit 24 Gym in Waterfall followed, where, in addition to instruction classes, she undertook marketing for the gym as well as small businesses in the area. Micaela worked closely with Strut Active, an active clothing brand offering swim and dancewear. Along the way she also managed the DMA gallery and gained experience dealing in art. During 2018 she started doing event planning and co-ordinated a big event at Cotswold Down that involved dieticians, fashion designers and fitness workouts. "I am passionate about empowering people through living a healthy, active lifestyle, and this became the reason for my involvement in lifestyle events," she explained. Success depends on the individual In Micaela's view, women and men should generally have the same approach to business. "Women do however need to be a bit more subtle and more focused on personal relations, rather than just financial wealth," she says. In addition, Micaela believes that women have the same ambition and drive as men in the business world and that success depends on the individual. In reflecting on her achievements, Micaela says that she is happy to have reached the place where she is, and also happy about where she is going. "There is still much left that I want to achieve, and I have big things planned for 2020, especially in terms of event coordination." She is planning and organising a major lifestyle expo to take place during October 2020 at "The Venue", a wedding and conference centre in the Shongweni area. Micaela believes that she has achieved a work-life balance even though work is her main focus. "I enjoy most things considered as work, like instructing Pilates, ballet, and yoga. I instruct and work out every morning and evening, but make sure that I have time for myself - I usually rest on a Sunday." There are no limitations If she could go back in time and give her younger self advice, Micaela would confirm that there are no limitations to what she can do. She would add that "Education is power, you need to start as soon as possible, find your purpose and work on that." Previous Next
- Virosha Pillay | KZN Top Business Nexus
< Back Next > Virosha Pillay Director, Avvo Labels Virosha Pillay, director of Avvo Labels, shares her unique journey into the world of printing and manufacturing. “We specialise in the manufacturing and printing of self-adhesive labels, garment labels, shrink sleeves, and base wraps,” she explains, speaking with pride about a company that has been in the industry for 40 years. “We have a specialised portfolio and an amazing clientele. Our strength lies in our service delivery, and we’ve recently expanded to a bigger, better space. We’re also looking forward to integrating new, innovative technologies into our operations.” Despite being born into the “printing dynasty,” Virosha’s initial career aspirations took her in a different direction. “Science always intrigued me, so I pursued a BSc in biochemistry and microbiology. I started my career as a chemical analyst at a pharmaceutical company,” she recalls. However, laboratory work soon lost its appeal. “I couldn’t stand being in a lab all day, isolated from people, so I shifted to pharmaceutical sales, and from there, I ventured into marketing.” Virosha’s passion for business grew, and she decided to join the family business. “It was a natural progression. I’ve always had a business inclination, so stepping into the family business felt right. Although I initially wanted to explore the world, I’ve found a way to integrate the business into my life, rather than force myself into it.” Family and Innovation Virosha is candid about the dynamics of working within a family business. “People often fear family business environments, worrying that heads will clash, but it’s been a wonderful experience for me. It depends largely on the bond with your family, and I’m fortunate to have a beautiful, supportive one. Everyone’s ideas are heard, and we’re given the space to express ourselves.” As for her role in the company, Virosha is driven by a vision of growth and innovation. “My goal has always been to contribute to Avvo Labels by taking it to the next level. The print industry is incredibly dynamic. I recently participated in a panel at Printing SA in KZN, where we discussed whether digitisation is overtaking print. But if you look around, everything is printed — our clothes, labels on bottles, everything. Print is here to stay.” Her vision for the future is clear: “I’d love to lead the company into an era of sustainable printing. It’s not just about bringing colour to the world; it’s about doing so responsibly. We’re exploring green technologies that will allow us to innovate while reducing our environmental footprint. That’s where I see myself contributing — leading a company that’s both creative and environmentally conscious.” Driving Change Virosha is particularly proud of the advancements made within Avvo Labels. “We’ve brought in a lot of new blood into the organisation, which has really energised the team. For a long time, we had employees who were set in their ways. That’s natural when you’ve been in the industry for years and the system is working. But I’ve introduced a younger, more forward-thinking generation into the company, and that’s helped us embrace new ideas.” The company has also invested in innovative technology. “We’ve adopted digital printing, which has been a game- changer for us. Additionally, we’ve moved from UV to LED printing, which not only improves efficiency but also reduces our carbon footprint and energy consumption. We’re definitely moving in the right direction when it comes to innovation.” Virosha’s enthusiasm for technological advancement extends beyond internal operations. “The print industry is always evolving. We work with suppliers who are also innovating — developing sustainable inks, eco-friendly papers, and better raw materials. It’s an exciting time to be in this industry because everyone is working towards the same goal: doing more with less impact on the environment.” Advice for the Younger Generation Reflecting on her journey, Virosha has valuable advice for aspiring business leaders, especially young women. “No business is easy,” she states firmly. “You can’t expect everything to fall into place just because you step into a role. It takes time, effort, and perseverance. But at the same time, never give up on your dreams. Women are incredibly capable. We juggle so many roles in life — whether it’s work, family, or personal ambitions — and we can achieve whatever we set our minds to.” Virosha believes that the younger generation has the potential to drive meaningful change in business and beyond. “We need fresh perspectives, and young people bring that. They need to know that their ideas are valuable, and they can have influence. It’s about staying persistent and finding your place in the world.” Looking ahead, Virosha hopes to continue growing both personally and professionally. “My ultimate goal is to be successful in all aspects of my life. Whether it’s in business, with my family, or for my children’s future, I want to ensure that I leave a lasting impact.” Finding balance in a busy life isn’t always easy, but Virosha has developed a healthy approach. “Work-life balance has been challenging, but over the years, I’ve found a solid group of friends and family who bring me peace. We’ve learned how to switch off after work and enjoy the moment. When I get home, I make a conscious effort to not stress over things I can’t control.” She credits her support system for helping her achieve this balance. “I’ve worked hard to get to this point, and I’m grateful for the friends, family, and colleagues who help me maintain that equilibrium. At the end of the day, it’s all about balance. A healthy work-life balance leads to a healthier, more successful life overall.” Virosha’s journey from science to the family business is a testament to her adaptability and determination. She continues to lead Avvo Labels with passion and a forward-thinking approach, always with an eye on both innovation and sustainability. < Previous Next >
