< Back Next Mohammed Rishaad Joosab ounder and director of Plastimed Liquid Packaging, has built one of KwaZulu‑Natal ’s promising young manufacturing businesses Mohammed Rishaad Joosab, the 30‑year‑old founder and director of Plastimed Liquid Packaging, has built one of KwaZulu‑Natal’s promising young manufacturing businesses from the ground up. His company specialises in producing plastic bottles, jars, buckets, closures and general‑purpose containers for diverse industries, including automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and chemicals. Mohammed’s entrepreneurial story began while completing his BCom in Business Management and Marketing in 2016. Although he appreciated the academic grounding, he found himself drawn to the practical side of business. “I was doing a lot of theory at university, but it was boring for me just reading about marketing and flyers,” he admits. “I wanted to test what the books were saying and see if it really worked.” Mohammed experimented with various small businesses, from buying and selling T‑shirts and golf shirts to producing chilli sauces in his home kitchen. The turning point came unexpectedly. “A customer came to buy my sauces and asked if he could also take my empty bottles,” he recalls. “In two weeks, the same thing happened four or five times. I realised I was making more money selling bottles than the sauces. That’s how the business started – a blessing in disguise.” Applying both theoretical knowledge and practical insight, he channelled his efforts into plastics manufacturing. What began as a home‑based experiment quickly evolved into a professional enterprise, now operating out of a 1,500‑square‑metre facility in Durban. Family at the Heart of His Purpose For Mohammed, business is about more than profit—it is deeply personal. “My dad had a business about 15 years ago that closed down due to politics,” he explains. “My ‘why’ is to show him that we can build something bigger and better together. It’s really to give back to my parents.” That sense of purpose drives his relentless work ethic and fuels his ambitions for growth. Mohammed believes that success comes in increments, with every milestone, no matter how small, worth celebrating. “There are too many achievements to choose from,” he says. “Buying my first machine, then the second, then the third. Getting my first big customer. Making my first R10,000. Every step is an accomplishment.” Transitioning from producing sauces in his family kitchen to manufacturing high‑quality plastic products was itself a significant achievement. Today, the company continues to grow, despite challenges along the way. Resilience Through Challenges Like many South African businesses, Plastimed faced its toughest tests during the COVID‑19 pandemic, followed by the 2021 KwaZulu‑Natal unrest and devastating floods. “During Covid, 70% of our customers stopped buying overnight,” recalls Mohammed. “Then came the looting and flooding – we were hit by all three. We had to adapt quickly, find new customers and change our business model to survive.” Even now, space is the company’s biggest operational challenge. “Our current premises are completely full. We need more room to grow – but that’s a good problem to have.” This resilience and ability to adapt have become core to Plastimed’s success story. Mohammed recognises that his company’s progress is a collective effort, and he is committed to creating an environment where his team is motivated and supported. “We hold weekly meetings to discuss challenges and how to overcome them,” he explains. “It’s about improving as individuals and as a company. Every problem is solved together.” Personally, his motivation is clear. “At the end of the day, it’s for my parents. That’s what keeps me going.” Championing Sustainable Plastics Operating in the plastics industry comes with unique challenges, particularly environmental concerns. Mohammed is determined that Plastimed plays a positive role in the circular economy. “Plastics get a bad reputation,” he says. “We want to show that manufacturing can be done sustainably. We’re adopting the green and circular economy, using 30–40% recycled plastics, and implementing quality control systems to differentiate ourselves.” Although this approach raises production costs, he believes it positions the business for long‑term success. “Our price is slightly higher, but we have something to back it – quality, sustainability, and compliance with legislation. Customers have peace of mind using our products because they know we’re accountable.” Looking ahead, Mohammed envisions significant growth for Plastimed in the next five years. He says, “We intend on opening a second manufacturing facility and warehouse outside of KwaZulu-Natal as well as then moving out of the borders of South Africa to enter a wider market.” The company is also pursuing ISO and food‑safety certifications to secure larger contracts with national brands such as Tiger Brands. He explains, “We’ve mastered the Durban market. Now we want to spread our wings and take on bigger contracts and new regions.” Young, Driven and Recognised Despite his age, Mohammed has already been recognised as a leading young entrepreneur, having received accolades in initiatives such as the KwaZulu‑Natal Youth in Business Awards and the Young Business Achiever Awards. His philosophy for life and business is simple yet powerful: “Good, better, best. Never let it rest until good is better and better is best.” Ultimately, Mohammed’s ambition is to create a business that not only thrives commercially but also makes a positive impact. “We want to make a dent in the world, even if it’s a small one,” he says. “For us, that means manufacturing in a sustainable, responsible way.” From a university graduate experimenting with chilli sauces to the director of a growing manufacturing company, Mohammed’s story is one of determination, innovation and purpose. With clear goals, a commitment to quality, and an unwavering family‑driven motivation, Plastimed Liquid Packaging is poised for an exciting future in South Africa’s manufacturing landscape. - Owner and Director, Design Origin and Eventtiming | KZN Top Business Nexus
< Back Owner and Director, Design Origin and Eventtiming If there’s a problem, there is always a solution. Michelle Bradfield is a seasoned entrepreneur with two thriving businesses under her belt. “I started Design Origin, a computer graphic design business, back in 1999,” she explains. “I’ve been on my own from the beginning, and it’s been quite a journey.” Her other business, Eventtiming, began in 2009, where she serves as a director. “We handle online entries, registration, and race timing. It’s a busy, hands- on venture that keeps me occupied seven days a week.” Growing up on the Bluff in Durban, Michelle attended Grosvenor Girls’ High School, completing her matriculation in 1982. “I like to say I’m QBE — Qualified by Experience,” she shares. “I don’t have a formal education, but I don’t believe you need one if you’re determined and willing to persevere. A degree isn’t the be-all and end-all.” Her entry into graphic design came by chance, as she recalls: “I was working in the office of a company called Proforms, handling business forms and stationery. When I first started, it was all darkrooms and typesetting, but then I saw someone using a computer to do graphic design. I thought, ‘I could do this’.” Her boss, familiar with her work ethic, took a leap of faith. “He invested a significant amount of money in the equipment, and I did a two-week course. I didn’t even know how to switch the computer on at first, but I just fell into it. It came very naturally to me.” Eventtiming Eventtiming began as her husband’s dream. “He’s a long-term runner and has completed the Comrades Marathon,” she notes. “He saw a better way to manage timing than the old manual systems, especially for smaller clubs where using permanent plastic chips was costly.” Her husband developed a programme using disposable timing chips, and Michelle’s involvement gradually increased. “I was just helping him at first, but then I got more involved until we were 50/50 in the business.” Managing Eventtiming demands significant effort and meticulous planning. “I handle the day-to-day running, organising, and planning,” she says. “We need to co- ordinate race numbers months in advance, making sure everything runs smoothly on race day. Sometimes, we’re up at 2:30 in the morning, and if it’s an ultra- marathon, we can be on-site for up to eight hours.” The work is physically and mentally exhausting, but Michelle finds it rewarding. “It’s a lot more than just taking a time over the line. There’s so much involved and dealing with the public every weekend is challenging. Not everyone understands how the timing system works, so you find yourself explaining things over and over.” She encourages others to experience the organisational side of races. “I think every runner should get involved in organising a race at some point,” she suggests. “It’s eye- opening to see just how much work goes into it.” Michelle’s approach to life is firmly grounded in practicality. “I’m not one for fairy-tale dreams,” she admits. “I’m very practical and realistic. I believe I can achieve just about anything, but my goals are grounded in reality.” Her journey into graphic design is a testament to this mindset. “It’s funny,” she reflects, “as a child, I wanted to be the editor of a magazine. I never expected that dream to resurface later in life through my work in computer graphics.” Her initial interest in accounting, thanks to her strong aptitude for maths, took a back seat to graphic design. “It seems unrelated, but maths plays a big role in my design work,” she says. “Angles, measurements, and layouts — all those skills come in handy.” Michelle credits her problem-solving skills for her success. She says, “I’ve taken on projects I didn’t know how to approach, and the satisfaction of achieving the end result is unmatched.” Michelle emphasises the importance of finding solutions rather than focusing on problems. “If there’s a problem, there is always a solution,” she asserts “That’s how I live my life. I just get things done. If I don’t know how to do something, I figure it out.” Staying up to date with technology is an ongoing challenge. “You just have to expose yourself to new things,” she advises. “The internet is amazing — you can find any answer you need.” Her work in graphic design often involves collaborating with other designers. “Sometimes, I receive artwork and don’t quite know what the designer has done,” she explains. “But I unravel it, go back to the basics, and deliver a print-ready product.” Find the Solution For young women following her, Michelle offers straightforward advice: “Stick to your guns. Being QBE has never held me back. Today, if you have a problem, you can go online and find the solution. Don’t let anything stand in your way. There’s so much you can achieve if you apply your mind.” Michelle’s life is busy, with her work schedule often stretching to seven days a week. “I do computer graphics during the day and event timing in the evenings. It’s intensive, but I’ve always believed in the value of hard work.” She added that she doesn’t have a lot of spare time, but when she does, it’s usually spent packing race pins and numbers. Michelle’s goals are simple yet significant. “I’m getting on in years,” she says, “I want to stay physically and mentally strong. If I can keep doing what I’m doing for the next 20 years, I’ll be happy.” Exercise is an essential part of her routine, helping her maintain the stamina needed for her demanding lifestyle. “I’ve been exercising for over 40 years,” she shares. “I lift weights and run — it’s what keeps me going.” However, despite the hectic pace, she finds ways to relax. “There’s nothing better than a quiet meal and a nice glass of red wine,” she says with a smile. “That’s my idea of unwinding.” For Michelle, business success is about persistence, problem-solving and staying grounded. “I don’t have a formal qualification, but I’ve built two successful businesses,” she reflects. “That’s proof enough that with the right attitude, you can achieve anything.” Previous Next
- Ashok Sewnarain | KZN Top Business Nexus
< Back Next Ashok Sewnarain Ashok Sewnarain is the chairman of IBV International Vaults Group Ashok Sewnarain serves as the chairman of IBV International Vaults Group, a global leader in exclusive vault services. Born in Mayville and educated at Burnwood High School in Sydenham, Ashok’s journey to entrepreneurship began early. His first job was working alongside his father in the family’s real estate business. While doing this, Ashok attended university at night to pursue a bachelor of accounting degree. However, after six months, balancing work, studies, and his relationship with his girlfriend proved too challenging, and he made the difficult decision to leave university. “I had to choose between continuing university, working for my dad, or breaking up with my girlfriend. I chose the easiest option,” Ashok explained. Despite leaving school, his time spent learning from his father provided him with valuable insights into the property business. However, Ashok’s ambitions extended beyond the family business, and he soon set out to create his own path, launching Randall’s Finance Brokers which was a small operation with just one desk and three chairs. Here, he offered financial services to businesses and private property developers, marking the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey. BUSINESS ACUMEN AND GROWTH Reflecting on his career, Ashok recalls starting Randall’s Finance Brokers at just 24 years old. From there, he moved into some property development and later expanded into the hotel industry, launching the Bayside Hotels group. His business drive eventually led him to establish IBV International Vaults in 2004, inspired by the long waitlist for Standard Bank vault services. “I identified a gap in the market where people needed secure, high-end vaults, and banks weren’t meeting that demand,” Ashok explained. Since then, IBV has grown into an international brand with nine branches, including the most exclusive vaults in London and Dubai. “It’s been 20 years, and the business continues to grow by filling a market need and offering exceptional services,” he added. LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS Among his many career milestones, Ashok cites negotiating with Barclays Bank to acquire half of their branch in Mayfair, London, to develop a vault as a particularly significant achievement. “Securing a vault in Mayfair, the most prestigious location in London, was a huge challenge, but one of the most rewarding,” he recalled. Another notable accomplishment was IBV being recognised by the Guinness World Records for hosting the IBV Supercar Club Charity Parade. Yet for Ashok, every small victory is just as important. “Business is a constant challenge, but with each challenge comes achievement,” he emphasised. His father’s advice to be courageous and to keep business simple has remained a guiding principle throughout his journey. AN ONGOING JOURNEY OF LEADERSHIP Ashok believes that the constant challenge of business growth and development is one of the biggest hurdles any entrepreneur faces. “Challenges come at you constantly, but the key is resilience and the ability to learn and grow from setbacks,” he said. His approach to business involves not just focusing on wins but also finding value in losses and using those experiences to become stronger. Leadership is central to Ashok’s philosophy, and he highlights the importance of clear communication with his team. “Any team needs leadership, direction, and a shared vision. It’s vital to keep the team motivated by ensuring they understand the destination,” he said. By fostering a sense of purpose and unity, Ashok ensures his team stays aligned and driven toward success. VISION FOR THE FUTURE Ashok’s family is his greatest source of inspiration. “My wife, children, and grandson motivate me every day,” he shared. He believes that health, family, and spirituality are the cornerstones of life, while business remains a project. This mindset keeps him grounded and focused on what truly matters, despite his professional success. Looking ahead, Ashok is optimistic about the future of business in KwaZulu-Natal. “The opportunities here are incredible, and despite the economic challenges, I believe that with the right approach, businesses in KwaZulu-Natal have a bright future,” he said. He views the region as a land of opportunity and is excited about the potential for growth and development. Ashok’s personal motto, “Fear no one, respect everyone”, reflects his approach to life and business. It underscores his belief in the importance of courage, humility, and respect as essential qualities for success. Previous Next

- Lorraine Dyer | KZN Top Business Nexus
< Back Next Lorraine Dyer Lorraine Dyer is the managing director for Bata South Africa Lorraine Dyer is the managing director for Bata South Africa, part of a multinational company that has become synonymous with quality footwear and community commitment. Bata operates in almost 70 countries now and has about 5,800 stores globally. In South Africa, its operations are both large and deeply rooted. Lorraine explains, “We have a factory in Loskop, Drakensberg that employs about 420 people.” Then we have a distribution centre where we employ 60 people, and in our head office in La Lucia, we have around 82 people. It’s a strong team of employees.” Bata South Africa produces approximately 6.5 million pairs of shoes each year. Her tone reflects genuine pride as she discusses the company’s impact. “It’s been going really well,” she says with a smile. Beyond the numbers, what drives Lorraine is the human side of the business. “What really persuaded me to join the group was the work that they do for communities, that you’re actually servicing a large part of the opulation, putting school shoes on the feet of children. That’s really phenomenal.” Bata has been operating in South Africa for over 70 years, yet many South Africans don’t realise it’s a multinational. The Toughees brand is well known throughout the country. However, the company has other brands such as Bata Comfit, known for its ladies’ and men’s comfort shoes, Bubblegummers for children, Bata Industrials safety footwear , as well as sneaker brands like Tomy Takkies and Power. A Journey of Impact Lorraine’s career has been defined by a blend of technical expertise and business intuition. “I actually started off as an industrial engineer with Woolworths, very technical,” she says. “I then moved to New Zealand and I fell into retail and loved it. My journey took a different turn then, but it was all for the good.” That journey took her across continents and industries. “I was asked to bring the Cotton On brand to South Africa from Australia, and we launched the first 50 stores here,” she recalls. “I did Converse and Nike for six years as general manager. After that, I had the opportunity to go into fragrances and beauty with Chanel. And then Bata came knocking.” As Lorraine puts it, “Each one of these experiences has taught me something different. What I loved about Chanel was that it taught me what true customer service is all about,” she reflects. “And now, at Bata, I’m able to combine that with the purpose of serving our communities.” Her impact at Bata has been both measurable and meaningful. “If you look at the numbers only, we’ve seen strong double-digit growth, which is significant for Bata globally and for the Africa region,” Lorraine says. “But I’m most proud of the culture that we’ve managed to change within the business, making sure that people are happy, that they love the brands and love their jobs. I believe that people are most productive when they are in a happy space. We’ve made sure we have the right people in the right seats and that they’re motivated,” she notes. That approach has helped Bata gain an impressive share in the school shoe category, a testament to both product quality and consumer trust. Lorraine acknowledges that running a large manufacturing and retail business in today’s economy is not without challenges. “Economic stability, import and export difficulties, and port delays all affect operations,” she says. “Consumers have less to spend, but what we love about South Africans is that they value quality. They will choose the better product, which is something for which we are known.” Building Communities Beyond business results, Lorraine’s passion lies in the people Bata employs. “We employ over 60 percent women within our business, which is really inspiring,” she shares proudly. “In our factory, the Toughees production line employs 92 percent women. That really has a great impact on the greater community.” The company’s presence in the Drakensberg region has been transformative. “When you drive through the Loskop community, people live in brick houses, not shacks. That really shows the impact that the Bata factory, which is the only factory in the area, has had over the years. When you uplift women, the family is uplifted, children prosper, and that’s really important to us.” Through the Bata Children’s Programme, the company supports education and upliftment initiatives for underprivileged children. “Each sale of Tomy Takkies also contributes a percentage to women’s enrichment programmes,” Lorraine explains. “There’s a lot of giving back, and that’s something I’ve always dreamed of being part of.” Lorraine commented, “The advice I’d give younger women is to believe that you can achieve your dreams. It is still a male-dominated world, but you can make an impact. Be prepared and understand that you are unique, and that is an asset in any situation, especially in business. Don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard.” Balancing Life and Looking Ahead Despite her role, Lorraine maintains a consistent sense of balance. “I have a lot of support,” she says. “My mother is my rock. She helps take care of my son, and I make sure that when I get home, work is at work. I focus on spending quality time with him.” For Lorraine, personal well-being is essential. “I find balance by making sure that I’m healthy and fit. I go to the gym, I play golf, and I’m a keen equestrian. I have a horse that we’re training for dressage, so I have a lot of activities that keep my mind healthy and help me de-stress from work.” Looking ahead, she is excited about Bata’s future. “We want to continue with the momentum that the business is on, to serve our communities and uplift women within our business.” Previous Next

When employees are emotionally stable, they are more productive, and everyone wins.Nonkululeko Mkhize < Back Nonkululeko Mkhize CEO of NHM Wellnet Nonkululeko Mkhize, a young businesswoman in KwaZulu-Natal, is the founder and CEO of NHM Wellnet. The business provides wellness services to individuals, companies and to the public at large. NHM Wellnet specialises in providing on-site counselling in the workplace, to both employers and employees, with a focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and managing mental health. In addition to counselling, NHM Wellnet offers supervisor training and the option of hosting wellness days to create awareness about mental health. Nonkululeko had worked as a social worker for a long time, before she decided to step out on her own and offer on- site services, thus saving clients’ time, and quickly found it a more efficient way to practice. Her business grew and she realised that there was room to take the business to greater heights to meet the needs of the corporate sector. Her dream and passion, said Nonkululeko, is to help people understand the importance of mental well-being and to silence the negativity attached to mental wellness. Her motivation, says Nonkululeko, comes from working with people, and from her daughter, who is her life. She was also motivated by the fact that at all the companies and the NGOs where she had worked, there was never a professional on site who she could just go and speak to. “I had to either take time off work or I just had to swallow whatever I was going through at that time,” she commented. Nonkululeko is self-driven and very ambitious, and she said her passion is to provide a tailor made affordable services to small businesses as well, as she thrives on doing something she loves on a daily basis. Her journey has been challenging. She said that trying to enter the corporate space, especially with the kind of work that she does, has been a very difficult journey. As the concept of employee wellness in corporate is still a fairly new field in South Africa, approaching companies has not been easy for Nonkululeko. She has found it tough to constantly infiltrate corporates and motivate why these kinds of services are vital, and how much they impact productivity. “When employees are emotionally stable, they are more productive, and everyone wins. When employees do not prioritise mental health and wellness, it is difficult to make a difference, and break through perceived biases,” she explained. In addition, her services are perceived as work that should be done in a private or a personal space. “Bringing that into the workplace where I’m asking employees to be vulnerable has been challenging,” added Nonkululeko. As Nonkululeko has worked in her predominantly black community, she has found great opposition to the idea of mental wellness. The idea that mental health and counselling, therapists or therapy is negative, and means that one is labeled weak, is a constant battle. The misconception is that someone who cannot deal with personal issues is somehow failing. The importance of spreading the message that mental health is not just something for those who have a mental issue, and should be seen as intrinsic to wellness, cannot be understated. Nonkululeko’s message is clear: “Your mental health is important. You are holistic beings, the ultimate goal is holistic wellness, starting at the core of your emotions and working your way out to external factors.” One of the main areas that she has targeted for her pro- bono services are the sports and recreation fields where she lives. Nonkululeko has identified that the provision of mental health as a service is not readily available in sporting clubs. However, she has found opposition to the idea of mental health services as among many of the soccer clubs, tennis clubs etc. these services are frowned upon. Nonkululeko has had to work tirelessly to encourage sports people to grasp the importance of this vital service. However, she has been successful and now works with soccer teams around her community where she offers these services to the youngsters for free as a way of giving back to the community. Nonkululeko’s biggest goal is to have a fully versatile wellness clinic in South Africa incorporating the services of mental health, spirituality, finances, and health, in a one-stop centre. “In a nutshell, wellness is a holistic endeavour, always interlinked. One cannot put it in a box, or isolate it as a single issue to treat,” she says, “A complex situation may require multiple services such as that of a therapist, a doctor, financial advisor, or spiritual insight for instance, and having these services separated makes it unlikely that these people will get the help they need.” Ultimately wellness comprises of these pillars. Using the vehicle of her business, Nonkululeko puts herself out there for other individuals to learn from her journey. It is her hope she would inspire others to realise that they too can start from humble beginnings and succeed. She believes that anyone can succeed regardless of their circumstances. Nonkululeko’s advice to young women who may be scared to start, or who would want to follow her path is to just do it anyway and make a start. Nonkululeko emphasizes, “The important thing is to just start the ball rolling.”recoup Relaxing after a busy day is important to Nonkululeko. As a social worker by profession, she is a listener at heart, so listening is a big part of her life. Consequently, listening to a variety of podcasts helps her to relax while keeping her informed. She also enjoys gym and aerobics in particular. Nonkululeko’s daughter is still a toddler, so she says with a smile, she gets a good workout at home. She also enjoys being outside, to meditate and reflect while watching nature. When asked what it means to her to be a part of the KwaZulu-Natal Top Business Women initiative Nonkululeko says, “The opportunity to showcase my business and passion is indeed a privilege. It means that I’m able to put myself out there and that other people can learn from my journey to know that they can start their businesses from a perspective of passion.”
