Ismail Simjee, CEO of Tropic Plastic & Packaging, has played a pivotal role in transforming the family-owned Durban business into South Africa’s largest flexible packaging manufacturer. Under his leadership, the company has expanded across Africa, diversified its product offering, invested in technology and automation, and established itself as a trusted packaging partner to leading local and international brands.

Having joined the business more than 14 years ago, Ismail worked across finance, operations, technology and business development before becoming managing director in 2018 and later CEO. A significant achievement has been leading the company’s strategic growth, including securing a major investment partnership, positioning the business for further expansion and acquisitions. He believes the company’s greatest strength lies in its people.

With more than 700 employees and exceptionally low staff turnover, Ismail has fostered a culture built on communication, recognition and long-term employee development. His leadership philosophy centres on resilience, adaptability and hard work, values that enabled the company to successfully navigate challenges such as the Covid 19 pandemic by diversifying into new markets.
