ZULULAND CHAMBER CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

Founded in 1926, the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI) marks a century of representing business interests and supporting economic development across the region. Established by a group of business leaders who recognised the value of a collective voice, the Chamber was created to protect and stimulate the local economy through collaboration, advocacy and partnership.

Over the past 100 years, Zululand has undergone significant economic change, and ZCCI has evolved alongside it.

Supporting a Changing Economy

In its early years, commerce centred on agriculture, small trading enterprises and port activity along the northern KwaZulu-Natal coastline. The Chamber provided a platform for businesses to share ideas, address challenges and engage with government and regional authorities.

The development of Richards Bay as a major industrial and port centre during the 1960s to 1980s transformed the region. Mining, manufacturing, logistics and large industrial operations expanded, creating new opportunities for local businesses. ZCCI helped connect emerging industries with entrepreneurs and smaller enterprises, strengthening the regional business network.

South Africa’s democratic transition in the 1990s brought further change. The Chamber broadened its focus to include transformation, empowerment and inclusive economic participation, recognising the importance of supporting small businesses and emerging entrepreneurs alongside established industries.

Building Business Relationships

Today, ZCCI continues to serve as a voice for business in Zululand, offering networking opportunities, business services and training programmes. Its work encompasses skills development for small and medium-sized enterprises, business development, labour relations and broader economic development initiatives.

Through industry support and collaboration, the Chamber seeks to help businesses grow while strengthening relationships between the private sector, government and the wider community.

Under its current executive committee, led by President Hlengiwe Mvubu, ZCCI continues the work of generations of leaders who have guided the organisation through changing economic conditions and industry developments.

Looking to the Next Century

The centenary celebrates not only the Chamber’s history but also the businesses, entrepreneurs and leaders who have contributed to Zululand’s economic progress. As technology, sustainability and global connectivity reshape the business environment, collaboration remains essential to regional growth.
